ABSTRACT: This study assessed the stock-recruitment relationship (SRR) for the Japanese sardine Sardinops melanostictus in the North-western Pacific. Of the 20 SRR models investigated, the Akaike information criterion (AIC) was the minimum (AIC = 551.2) when the data were separated into two groups (A and B) and the log-normal distribution was applied as the error term. Group A was constructed with SRR data from 1976–1987 and 1992–2004. Group B consisted of data from 1988–1991. The AIC minimum model was R = 22.8 S × e ε for Group A, where R , S , and ε denote the recruitment of sardine (individual number of 0-year old fish), spawning stock biomass (SSB), and error term, respectively. This model indicated that recruitment was proportional to the SSB and that no density-dependent effect operated over the range of SSB investigated (51 000–11.3 million t). Recruitment was markedly higher (lower) when the sea surface temperature (SST) of the Kuroshio Extension area in February was low (high). The essential SRR can simply be expressed as R = 22.8 S × e ε with the level of recruitment deviating from the model to a greater or lesser degree depending on the environmental conditions. 相似文献

To investigate the biosynthesis and stereochemistry of syringylglycerol-8-O-4′-(sinapyl alcohol) ether (SGSE), a syringyl 8-O-4′ neolignan, feeding experiments and enzyme assays using Eucommia ulmoides were carried out. Diastereoselective formation of erythro-SGSE was found. When [8-14C]sinapyl alcohol was administered to excised shoots of E. ulmoides, 14C was incorporated into free SGSE and SGSE glucosides. In stems, incorporation into (+)-erythro-[14C]SGSE (0.037%) with 9.1% enantiomeric excess (% e.e.) was found; incorporation into the threo isomer was not detectable. Erythro-[14C]SGSE glucosides (0.047%) dominated over threo forms (0.007%) with 74.0% diastereomeric excess (% d.e.); both diastereomers were levorotatory with 32.0% e.e. and 18.3% e.e., respectively. In leaves, higher incorporation into (−)-erythro-[14C]SGSE (0.500%, 15.9% e.e.) than into the threo isomer (0.206%, 7.4% e.e.) was observed (41.6% d.e.). (−)-Erythro-[14C]SGSE glucosides (1.692%, 25.0% e.e.) were produced at higher rates than threo isomers (0.177%, 16.4% e.e.) with 81.0% d.e. In incubations of a mixture of [8-14C]sinapyl and [8-14C]coniferyl alcohols with an insoluble enzyme preparation from stems of E. ulmoides, erythro-SGSE was preferentially produced. The highest % d.e. Oocytes were recovered from bitch ovaries at various stages of the estrous cycle by the slicing method. The proportion of Grade A oocytes (darkly pigmented and surrounded in part, or whole, by dense layers of cumulus cells) were counted. Only Grade A oocytes were cultured in TCM199 supplemented with 5% fetal calf serum for evaluation of meiotic competence. There were no significant differences in the total number of oocytes or the proportion of Grade A oocytes that were recovered from bitches at various stages of the estrous cycle. Only 11% of the oocytes reached metaphase II (MII) at 72 hr after initiation of maturation culture. An 8-year-old, male, mongrel dog developed severe cough and anorexia and died within 3 months. Autopsy revealed an invasive grayish-white mass in the right kidney and multiple nodules in the lungs, thoracic wall, and spleen. Histologically, the renal mass and the other nodules were mainly composed of papillotubular structures lined by oval-to-polygonal pleomorphic cells. The cells were reactive with DBA, PNA, and UEA-1 lectins and positive for vimentin but negative for CD10 and high molecular weight cytokeratin. Because of its histological, histochemical, and immunohistochemical similarities with human collecting duct carcinoma (CDC), a diagnosis of renal collecting duct carcinoma with pulmonary, thoracic, and splenic metastases was established. We report a tumor that developed at the root of the tail in a male, 2-year-old Shih Tzu dog. Histologically, the tumor consisted of basaloid epithelial cells, with shadow cells and neoplastic melanocyte proliferation. Immunohistochemically, epithelial components were positive for keratin/cytokeratin but basaloid cells were negative. Mononuclear or multinuclear melanocytes were positive for vimentin, S-100 protein, and HMB-45. In conclusion, this dog was diagnosed with canine melanocytic matricoma on the basis of the similarity of the histologic and immunohistochemical features in humans, and it may be the first case in an animal. 相似文献

The distribution of cortical resin canals and periderm formation in the cortex of Pinus thunbergii was studied in relation to early invasion of the pinewood nematode, Bursaphelenchus xylophilus. Nematode invasion was restricted in stem cuttings of P. thunbergii in which periderm closed cortical resin canals. Early invasion of the nematodes was also restricted in stem cuttings where wound periderm had formed in response to prior nematode inoculation. It was concluded that early invasion of pinewood nematodes in living bark tissue is restricted by periderm in mature stems and by wound periderm that had formed as the result of previous nematode infection. 相似文献

Telomerase adds new telomeric sequences to the end of chromosomal DNA in order to overcome the end-replication problem. The upregulation of telomerase activity in tumours has been reported in humans and some mammals and is considered to be a tumour marker; however, such activity has not been investigated in cows. Therefore, we investigated telomerase activity in bovine leukaemia, the most common tumour in cows and its relationship with the bovine leukaemia virus (BLV) infection, which is the major cause of leukaemia. Telomerase activity was detected in 25 of 29 bovine leukaemia tissue samples. In peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) from BLV-infected cases that did not develop the tumour, telomerase activity was detected in 11 of 71 cases (15.5%). When these cases were classified based on serological tests and the peripheral blood lymphocyte count, the telomerase activity was observed to be the highest in the seropositive, non-lymphoproliferative (PBL<8000 microl(-1)) cases (three of seven cases, 42.9%), and not observed in the lymphoproliferative cases (PBL<16,000 microl(-1)) except in one case. Although the precise pathogenesis of BLV-related diseases remains obscure, persistent lymphocytosis is considered as a pre-neoplastic state. In contrast, our results suggested that given the fact that telomerase activity indicates tumour development, the aleukaemic stage could be defined as the 'pre-neoplastic state'. In conclusion, similar to many tumours in humans, telomerase activity was detected in bovine leukaemia; further, this activity can be a potentially useful prediction marker for tumour development and/or a good therapeutic target. 相似文献

The aims of the present study were to determine whether salsolinol (SAL), a dopamine-related compound, is present in the bovine posterior pituitary (PP) gland, and to clarify the effect of SAL on the secretion of prolactin (PRL) in ruminants. SAL was detected in extract of bovine PP gland using high-pressure liquid chromatography with electrochemical detection (HPLC-EC). A single intravenous (i.v.) injection of SAL (5 and 10mg/kg body weight) significantly and dose-dependently stimulated the release of PRL in goats (P<0.05). Plasma PRL levels reached a peak 10min after the injection, then gradually returned to basal values in 60-80min. The PRL-releasing pattern was similar to that in response to sulpiride (a dopamine receptor antagonist). The intracerebroventricular (i.c.v.) injection of 1mg of SAL had no significant effect on the release of PRL in calves, however, 5mg significantly stimulated the release (P<0.05) with peak values reached 30-40min after the injection. Moreover, SAL significantly stimulated the release of PRL from cultured bovine anterior pituitary cells at doses of 10(-6) and 10(-5)M, compared to control cells (P<0.05). Taken together, our data clearly show that SAL is present in extract of the PP gland of ruminants, and has PRL-releasing activity both in vivo and in vitro. Therefore, this endogenous compound is a strong candidate for the factor having PRL-releasing activity that has been previously detected in extract of the bovine PP gland. 相似文献
