Alzheimer type II astrocytes in the brains of pigs with salt poisoning (water deprivation/intoxication)

The finding of Alzheimer type II astrocytes, in addition to the pathognomonic combination of laminar cerebrocortical necrosis and eosinophil infiltration, in the brains of pigs is reported for the first time in cases of indirect salt poisoning following water deprivation.

Pleistocene extinction of genyornis newtoni: human impact on australian megafauna

More than 85 percent of Australian terrestrial genera with a body mass exceeding 44 kilograms became extinct in the Late Pleistocene. Although most were marsupials, the list includes the large, flightless mihirung Genyornis newtoni. More than 700 dates onGenyornis eggshells from three different climate regions document the continuous presence of Genyornis from more than 100,000 years ago until their sudden disappearance 50,000 years ago, about the same time that humans arrived in Australia. Simultaneous extinction of Genyornis at all sites during an interval of modest climate change implies that human impact, not climate, was responsible.     

Congenital hydranencephaly and arthrogryposis of Corriedale sheep

SUMMARY: A syndrome of congenital malformations in Corriedale sheep characterised by brachygnathia inferior, campylognathia, tetraemlic arthrogryposis, kyphoscoliosis, hydranencephaly and hypoplasia of the brain stem, cerebellum and spinal cord occurring in various combinations is described. Histologically there was generalised hypomyelinogenesis and hypoplasia of the central nervous system with neurogenic atrophy of skeletal muscle. The syndrome resembled that caused by congenital infection with Akabane virus, however, serological, pathological and epidemiological data indicated that Akabane virus was not involved. The results of a breeding trial suggested that the disorder may be transmitted with an autosomal recessive mode of inheritance.     

Prediction of the advancing wetting front in border strip irrigation

Summary Four methods of predicting the advance of the water front in border irrigation are compared for nine sets of experimental data reported in the literature. The water balance method (Bishop et al., 1967), the method of Katopodes and Strelkoff (1977) based on zero inertia hydraulics and the method of Michael (1978) enable the distances that the wetting front advances to be calculated for various advance times. A new method presented in this paper, although less accurate than that of Katopodes and Strelkoff, and particularly for nearly flat border strips, enables the coefficients of exponential advance equations to be simply calculated. The dependence of all four methods on reliable infiltration characteristics and on the accurate prediction of the Manning roughness coefficient is emphasized.Lecturer and Visiting Senior Lecturer, respectively
