OBJECTIVE: To determine the effect of paratuberculosis on culling, milk production, and milk quality in infected dairy herds. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. ANIMALS: 689 lactating dairy cows in 9 herds. PROCEDURE: Milk, blood, and fecal samples were obtained from all cows. Fecal samples were evaluated via mycobacterial culture. Serum samples were tested with a commercially available ELISA for antibodies against Mycobacterium avium subsp paratuberculosis, and preserved milk samples were tested with an ELISA for antibodies against M paratuberculosis. Mixed effect and proportional hazards models were used to determine the effect of paratuberculosis on 305-day milk, fat, and protein production; somatic cell count linear score; and the risk of culling. RESULTS: Cows with positive results of bacteriologic culture of feces and milk ELISA produced less milk, fat, and protein, compared with herdmates with negative results. No difference in 305-day milk or fat production was detected in cows with positive results of serum ELISA, compared with seronegative cows. The 3 survival analyses revealed that cows with positive results of each test were at higher risk of being culled than cows with negative results. Paratuberculosis status, as determined by use of all 3 diagnostic tests, was not associated with milk somatic cell count linear score. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that for the 9 herds in this study, paratuberculosis significantly decreased milk production and cow longevity.  相似文献

Excretory urography is a type of contrast study used to verify and localize upper urinary tract disease. In some instances, information regarding renal function and disease pathophysiology can also be obtained. With the recent advances in small animal ultrasonagraphy, excretory urography has become an underutilized procedure. This article will help explain why excretory urography remains, and will remain, a ubiquitous test that gives excellent detail of the entire urinary tract, and remains an essential tool for the assessment of the renal pelves and especially the ureters. Populations of the cereal cyst nematode fail to multiply in many soils in Europe and farmers are able to grow susceptible crops intensively on infested land. Similar numbers of females develop on roots in summer in soils where numbers of the nematode increase or decline. Two fungi, Nematophthora gynophila and Verticillium chlamydosporium parasitize females on roots, prevent cyst formation, decrease fecundity, and limit nematode numbers. Formalin (38 % formaldehyde) soil drenches at 3000 1/ha reduce the activity of these fungi and populations of the nematode increase, N. gynophila is an Oomycete which infects by motile zoospores whose activity is decreased when summer rainfall is light whereas V. chlamydosporium is much less affected by soil moisture. The decline of Heterodera avenae populations is associated with large numbers of spores in soil. At present it is not possible to control the nematode by introducing these fungi into soils where they are few or absent.  相似文献

Calves were given viable Taenia saginata eggs by stomach tube and slaughtered 12, 16 or 24 weeks later. The cysticerci-infected carcasses were frozen at six different temperatures for variable lenghts of time. Meat samples were then allowed to thaw at room temperature and the cysticerci were manually isolated. Criteria of viablity of the metacestodes were scolex evagination and peristaltic movements of the bladder wall. Sixteen and especially 12-week-old cysticerci were much more susceptible to the lethal effects of freezing than were 24-week-old cysticerci. The time and temperature combinations required to ensure death of all cysticerci were 360 h at ?5°C, 216 h at ?10°C, and 144 h at ?15°C or lower.  相似文献

Morphine could be detected in horses dosed with 0.1 mg of drug/kg of body weight for up to 48 hours in blood and 144 hours in urine. This dose of morphine elicited no observable effects and is a suggested analgesic dose. Computer analysis revealed that a 3-compartment open system was the best fitting model with a serum half life (t1/2(beta)) of 87.9 minutes and a urine t1/2(beta) of 101.1 minutes. Binding to equine serum proteins was linear over a drug concentration range of 3.88 X 10(-5)M to 3.50 X 10(-8)M and averaged 31.6%. In RBC-partitioning experiments, 78.1% of the drug was found in the plasma fraction. The data indicated that a horse should not be given morphine closer than 1 week before a race.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether Neospora caninum serostatus was associated with milk production among Holstein cattle in Ontario. DESIGN: Case-control study and cross-sectional observational study. ANIMALS: 3,702 Holstein cows in 83 herds (case-control study) and 3,162 Holstein cows in 57 herds. PROCEDURE: Herds in the case-control study were grouped on the basis of N. caninum abortion status. Herds in the observational study were considered representative of Ontario dairy herds. The N. caninum serostatus of individual cows was determined with a kinetic ELISA. Milk production was modeled to compare seropositive with seronegative animals while controlling for parity, days since parturition, and herd clustering. RESULTS: In the case-control study, 305-day milk production of seropositive cows was significantly less than milk production of seronegative cows in herds with abortions attributable to N. caninum infection and in herds with abortions attributable to pathogens other than N. caninum, but not in herds without abortion problems. In the observational study, 305-day milk production for seropositive cows was not significantly different from milk production of seronegative cows. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that the association between N. caninum serostatus and milk production in Ontario Holstein dairy cattle may depend on abortion status of the herd. In herds with abortion problems, regardless of cause, N. caninum-seropositive cattle produced less milk, whereas in herds without abortion problems, N. caninum-seropositive cattle produced the same amount of milk as seronegative cattle.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to investigate the importance of maternal genetic effects on postweaning performance traits of Yorkshire, Landrace, Duroc, and Hampshire breeds of swine. Data consisted of performance test records collected in a commercial swine operation from 1992 to 1999. Boars from 60% of the litters were culled at weaning based on a combination of maternal and performance indexes that differed by breed. Remaining boars and all females were grown to 100 d of age. At this time all pigs were weighed (WT100) and selected for testing using recalculated breed-specific indexes (n = 15,594, 55,497, 12,267, and 9,782 for Landrace, Yorkshire, Duroc, and Hampshire, respectively). All pigs were weighed at the end of the 77-d test, and backfat (BF) and loin eye area (LEA) were measured over the 12th rib by ultrasound. Average daily feed intake was calculated for boars, and ADG was calculated for all animals. Genetic parameters were estimated for each breed and trait using multiple-trait DFREML procedures. Fixed effects were contemporary groups and either initial or final test age as a covariate. Four models were examined. Model 1 included only the additive genetic effect of the animal. Model 2 added the common litter environmental effect; Model 3 added the maternal genetic value assumed to be uncorrelated with additive genetic effects. Model 4 was the same as Model 3 with additive and maternal genetic effects assumed to be correlated. All models were two-trait models with WT100 as the second trait. Ratios of likelihoods were used to compare models. Maternal effects were important (P < 0.05) for WT100, ADG, ADFI, LEA, and BF in Landrace; for WT100, ADG, LEA, and BF in Yorkshire; for WT100 and ADG in Duroc, and for WT100 in Hampshire. Estimates of heritabilities for direct additive effects using the appropriate model for ADG, ADFI, LEA, and BF were 0.28, 0.34, 0.48, and 0.63 for Landrace; 0.26, 0.31, 0.39, and 0.65 for Yorkshire; 0.14, 0.20, 0.26, and 0.35 for Duroc; and 0.17, 0.23, 0.25, and 0.31 for Hampshire, respectively. Heritability estimates for maternal genetic effects for ADG, ADFI, LEA, and BF were 0.02, 0.05, 0.06, and 0.07 for Landrace and 0.02, 0, 0.04, and 0.06 for Yorkshire, respectively. They were zero for all traits except ADG (0.03) in Duroc and for all traits in Hampshire. Maternal effects may need to be considered in genetic evaluation of performance traits in some breeds of swine.  相似文献
