OBJECTIVE: To determine the underlying cause, pathophysiologic abnormalities, and response to treatment in cats with septic peritonitis and identify differences between cats that survived following treatment and cats that did not survive despite treatment. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 51 cats with septic peritonitis. PROCEDURE: Medical records were reviewed for clinical findings; results of clinicopathologic testing, microbial culture, and radiography; diagnosis; treatment; and outcome. RESULTS: Signs of pain during palpation of the abdomen were reported for only 29 of 47 (62%) cats. Eight (16%) cats had relative bradycardia (heart rate < 140 beats/min). The most commonly isolated organisms included Escherichia coli, Enterococcus spp, and Clostridium spp. The most common cause of peritonitis was gastrointestinal tract leakage (24 cats). No definitive source could be identified in 7 cats. Treatment, including exploratory surgery, was pursued in 23 cats, of which 16 (70%) survived and were discharged. There were no significant differences between survivors and nonsurvivors in regard to heart rate, age, rectal temperature, serum lactate concentration, WBC count, PCV, blood glucose concentration, or serum albumin concentration. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that clinicopathologic abnormalities and outcome in cats with septic peritonitis are similar to those reported for dogs. However, certain features may be unique, including an absence of signs of pain during abdominal palpation, relative bradycardia, and apparent spontaneous peritonitis in some cats. 相似文献

Objective: To determine the recurrence rate of clinical signs in dogs with spinal hyperpathia and mild neurological deficits due to presumed Hansen Type 1 thoracolumbar intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) that were managed medically with anti‐inflammatory agents, and to compare the recurrence rates between dogs treated with corticosteroids and those treated with nonsteroidal anti‐inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). Design: Retrospective study. Setting: Private veterinary emergency clinic in a large metropolitan area. Animals, interventions, and measurements: Medical records were used to ascertain study eligibility, record patient signalment and condition severity, and document medical treatment regimen. Each dog was assigned a severity score: (1) spinal hyperpathia with no neurological deficits, (2) spinal hyperpathia with conscious proprioceptive deficits only, or (3) spinal hyperpathia with ataxia but still retaining ambulatory motor function. Owners of 78 dogs weighing less than 16 kg presented from 1997 through 2000 were sent a questionnaire to determine recurrence rate. Main results: All dogs recovered from the initial episode; 39 experienced recurrence and 39 did not. There was no statistically significant relationship between gender, age, or severity score and recurrence rate. Dogs treated with NSAIDs or methylprednisolone sodium succinate (MPSS) were less likely to experience recurrence than dogs treated with corticosteroids other than MPSS. Conclusion: A 50% recurrence of presumed IVDD occurred in this population of dogs after treatment with NSAIDs or corticosteroids. Ten veterinary pathologists at 1 veterinary institution independently assigned histologic grades to the same 60 canine cutaneous mast cell tumors (MCTs). There was significant variation among pathologists in grading the MCTs (P < 0.001). The probability of assigning a low grade was significantly higher for the pathologists in this study who use a published reference for histologic grading of canine cutaneous MCTs that allows subcutaneous MCTs or MCTs with mitotic figures to be included in the low-grade category (P < 0.0001 and P < 0.0001, respectively). 相似文献

To produce detailed ultrasonographic images of the soft tissue structures around the canine elbow joint, a series of greyhound cadaver limbs were scanned both intact and dissected in a water bath. Suitable transducer positions and bone landmarks are described and the ultrasonographic appearance of the lateral collateral ligament, anconeal process, triceps tendon, origin of olecranon ligament, biceps tendon insertion, medial collateral ligament, and medial coronoid process are illustrated. Improved understanding of the anatomy of the canine elbow will support clinical ultrasonography of this region. 相似文献

Objective: To measure serum parathyroid hormone (PTH) and 25‐hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations in cats with urethral obstruction. Design: Prospective single cohort study. Setting: University affiliated veterinary teaching hospital. Animals: Male cats with urethral obstruction. Interventions: Routine blood samples drawn from male cats with urethral obstruction. Measurements and main results: Measured variables included blood gas parameters, plasma sodium, potassium, chloride, and ionized calcium concentrations, as well as serum blood urea nitrogen, creatinine, phosphorus, PTH, and 25‐hydroxyvitamin D3 concentrations. PTH was inversely correlated with ionized calcium and positively correlated with serum phosphorus. No discernable relationship could be found between 25‐hydroxyvitamin D3 and any of the measured parameters. Conclusions: Lack of parathyroid response does not appear to be the underlying mechanism for ionized hypocalcemia in cats with urethral obstruction. 相似文献

Bacterial colonization of intravenous catheters in young dogs suspected to have parvoviral enteritis

OBJECTIVE: To determine the prevalence of bacterial colonization of IV catheters among young dogs suspected to have parvoviral enteritis, to identify the organisms responsible for catheter colonization, and to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility of organisms that were obtained. DESIGN: Case series. ANIMALS: 100 dogs. PROCEDURE: Catheters were aseptically removed when fluid therapy was discontinued, the catheter was replaced, or the dog died. The distal tip of the catheter was cut off, split open, and vortexed with sterile saline (0.9% NaCl) solution. The saline solution was plated on culture plates, which were then incubated and examined for bacterial growth every 24 hours for 72 hours. All bacteria cultured were identified, and antimicrobial susceptibility was determined. RESULTS: Bacteria were isolated from 22 catheters. Most bacteria that were isolated were of gastrointestinal tract or environmental origin (Serratia odorifera, S. liquefaciens, S. marcescens, Acinobacter anitratus, Citrobacter freundii, Klebsiella pneumoniae, K. oxytoca, Escherichia coli, Enterobacter spp). Only 2 gram-positive organisms were isolated (Staphylococcus intermedius and Streptococcus spp). High percentages of organisms were resistant to penicillin, lincomycin, cloxacillin, erythromycin, and cephalexin. Percentages of organisms resistant to amikacin, enrofloxacin, chloramphenicol, potentiated sulfonamides, and amoxicillin-clavulanic acid were low. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Results suggest that IV catheters may be colonized with bacteria in 22% of young dogs suspected to have parvovirus infection. 相似文献
