Dietary aureomycin and the response of the fowl to stressors.

1. Conventional or gnotobiotic chicks, when injected from 1 d to 3 weeks of age with adrenocorticotrophic hormone (120IU/kg, three times weekly), showed a depressed growth rate, adrenal hypertrophy and depletion of cholesterol form the adrenal glands. 2. Feeding a diet supplemented with aureomycin (10 mg/kg) did not have any consistent ameliorating effect on the response of the stressed bird as judged by the above parameters. 3. It was found that treating germfree chicks with five daily injections of sterile milk on days 3 to 7 did not depress growth rate at any time, nor could differences in adrenal size or cholesterol stores be detected at the end of the 21-d experimental period. The responses were not modified by feeding an aureomycin-supplemented diet.     

Quantitative study of pulmonary endocrine cells in fetal, postnatal and adult sheep

Using light microscopic immunohistochemistry, neuron-specific enolase (NSE)-positive endocrine cells were quantitatively analyzed in the sheep lung during different stages of development from the canalicular stages to adulthood. In all stages, NSE-positive endocrine cells were usually located in the bronchi and bronchioles as solitary cells, although a few NSE-positive cell clusters, the so-called neuroepithelial bodies, were found in some places. The number of NSE-positive endocrine cells decreased with advanced stages of gestation. In the late alveolar stage, the number of NSE-positive endocrine cells reached its bottom during the fetal period. There was a gradual upturn after birth. The overall pattern of growth and differentiation of the endocrine cells is most likely species-related and depends on the state of airway development; the number of the endocrine cells of almost all animals, excluding the sheep, in relation to the size of the lung reaches a peak in the late fetal and early neonatal periods and decreases shortly thereafter. NSE-positive endocrine cells were also predominantly located in the large airways during the early stage of development (canalicular stage), and were found more frequently in the small peripheral airways towards the term. These results show the number of NSE-positive endocrine cells in the sheep to be different from that seen in other species.     

Fell Pony syndrome in a pony in North America

A 5-week-old Fell Pony colt was examined for fever, lethargy, and anemia. The colt had been lethargic for 1 week before examination, had continued to nurse, had a temperature of 104°F (40°C), and was treated with ceftiofur (5 mg/kg IM q12h). Approximately 36 hours before examination, the colt developed watery diarrhea. Blood work performed by the referring veterinarian on the day of admission revealed a PCV of 10%.     

Detection of Streptococcus equi subspecies equi using a triplex qPCR assay

Genome sequencing data for Streptococcus equi subspecies equi and zooepidemicus were used to develop a novel diagnostic triplex quantitative PCR (qPCR) assay targeting two genes specific to S. equi (eqbE and SEQ2190) and a unique 100 base pair control DNA sequence (SZIC) inserted into the SZO07770 pseudogene of S. zooepidemicus strain H70. This triplex strangles qPCR assay can provide results within 2 h of sample receipt, has an overall sensitivity of 93.9% and specificity of 96.6% relative to the eqbE singlex assay and detects S. equi at levels below the threshold of the culture assay, even in the presence of contaminating bacteria.

This experiment was designed primarily to compare the efficacy of two heat-concentrated synthetic medium tuberculins, one prepared from strains of Mycobacterium bovis and the other from Mycobacterium tuberculosis, when used in tuberculin testing of cattle.     

The toxicity of wood preservatives to stock

Preservatives in this class are balanced mixtures of soluble salts in which arsenate is the main toxicradical. When timber is impregnated with these solutions and dried, the salts are deposited amongst the wood fibres as microcrystalline compounds which are relatively insoluble. The proportions of the salts in the treating solutions and their interactions during the drying period determine how firmly the toxic ingredients will be; fixed in the wood. For timber that will be subjected to severe conditions of weathering and ground contact use, as is the case with fence posts, good retention of arsenic against leaching is essential. It follows, therefore, that the greater the degree of fixation of an arsenical preservative for fence-post treatment, the less will be the hazard to exposed livestock.     

Stratospheric ozone with added water vapor: influence of high-altitude aircraft

Simple, steady-state models for ozone photochemistry, radiative heat balance, and eddy-diffusive mass transport can be combined to estimate water-induced changes in the stratospheric ozone concentrations and temperatures, the integrated ozone column, the solar power transmitted to the earth's surface, and the surface temperature. These changes have been computed parametrically for mixing fractions of water vapor between 3 x 10(-6) and 6.5 x 10(-6). With added water from the exhausts of projected fleets of stratospheric aircraft, the ozone column may diminish by 3.8 percent, the transmitted solar power increase by 0.07 percent, and the surface temperature rise by 0.04 degrees K in the Northern Hemisphere. Due to a cancellation of terms, temperatures in the lower stratosphere remain essentially unchanged. These results are sensitive to the form of the water profile and emphasize the potential role of convective transients near 30 kilometers.
