Nitrate resulting from nitrogen fertilisers used in Agriculture is a widespread contaminant of shallow groundwater and causes adverse effects on human, animal and ecosystem health. In order to evaluate the full extent of groundwater nitrate contamination, and how it might evolve in time, it is essential to understand controls on aquifer assimilative capacity. This level of understanding will also help to better target policies and incentives aimed at controlling the amount of nitrate entering downstream water systems.The potential for nitrate attenuation in groundwater was assessed by examining the concentration and distribution pattern of electron donors such as dissolved organic carbon (DOC), ferrous iron, and redox indicators such as dissolved oxygen (DO) and Eh in 57 monitoring bores on the lower Burdekin coastal floodplain, one of Queensland's and Australia's premier irrigation districts. Nitrate concentrations ranged from 0.1 to 14.4 mg/L NO3-N but were mostly undetectable in bores close to the coast. Groundwater age dates suggest that while there are nitrate ‘hot spots’ in certain areas, some or most of the nitrate is being consumed on its way to the ocean. Low nitrate concentrations were coupled with high ferrous concentrations. The low DO concentrations (<2 mg/L) and high ferrous concentrations found in 55% of the bores indicate that redox conditions are suitable for nitrate attenuation by either denitrification or dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium. The reducing environment may be associated with the high DOC concentrations (up to 82 mg C/L) found in these groundwaters. Furthermore, high levels of ferrous iron found in the Ayr area combined with the wide spread geographical distribution of DOC indicate that these areas have a high potential for sustaining geochemical processes that reduces nitrate levels. The distribution of geochemical indicators also suggests that the shallower depths (<15 m) of the groundwater systems have more potential for nitrate reduction than the deeper depths. The map identifying areas within the lower Burdekin with most potential for denitrification is a valuable first step in helping to understand and manage the fate of nitrate entering the groundwater.  相似文献

Carrot cell walls have been shown to contain significant quantities of esterified p-hydroxybenzoic acid, which is presumed to be esterified to cell wall polymers. The purpose of this study was to investigate the distribution of p-hydroxybenzoic acid and related phenolics among carrot cell wall polysaccharides. Cell wall material was prepared from fresh carrot root tissues and extracted sequentially with water, imidazole, cyclohexane- trans-1,2-diamine- N, N, N', N'-tetraacetate, Na 2CO 3, and KOH (0.5, 1, and 4 M) to leave a cellulose-rich residue. The fractions were analyzed for their carbohydrate and phenolic acid components. Selected soluble fractions were subfractionated further by graded precipitation in ethanol. The majority of the polymer fractions comprised pectic polysaccharides, with varying quantities of neutral sugars (arabinose and galactose). Hemicellulosic polymers were generally found only in the strong alkali extracts (4 M KOH). p-OH-benzoic acid was the predominant phenolic ester and was associated with most fractions analyzed; p-OH-benzaldehyde was also detected in the fractions at much lower levels. Principal components analysis of the chemical data indicated that the p-OH-benzoic acid was associated predominantly with the branched pectic polysaccharides, in contrast to the p-OH-benzaldehyde. The possible roles and functional properties of these phenolics are discussed.  相似文献

Analysis of wheat bran and spent grain shows that concentrations of ferulate and diferulates offer considerable scope to modify the cross-linking of feruloylated polysaccharides and hence the mechanical properties of these residues. In solution ferulic acid (FA) can be readily polymerized by horseradish peroxidase, but when esterified to a polysaccharide, the profile of diferulates becomes restricted. This situation also exists in muro and suggests structural constraints may limit the availability of FA for cross-linking. At relatively low polysaccharide concentration, (approximately 3%), steric restrictions were apparent in gels prepared using isolated polysaccharides. Mechanical properties such as swelling also appear to be fixed at these relatively low polysaccharide concentrations. This limits the potential to modify mechanical properties in muro through oxidoreductase activity. To modify mechanical properties such treatments will need to focus on increasing the "flexibility" of the cell wall matrix and the accessibility of enzymes to the cell wall matrix.  相似文献

Bergamot peel is an underutilized byproduct of the essential oil and juice-processing industry. As with other Citrus peels, it still contains exploitable components, such as pectins and flavonoids. Commercial glycoside hydrolases, specifically a combination of pectolytic and cellulolytic enzymes, solubilized a high percentage of the material (81.94%). The flavonoid profile of the peel consisted of characteristic Citrus species flavanone rutinosides and neohesperosides derived from naringenin, eriodictyol, and hesperetin. In addition, a number of minor flavanone and flavone glycosides, not found in orange and lemon peels, were identified. The majority of flavonoids were extracted in the two 70% v/v EtOH extractions. Processing this material clearly has economic potential leading to low environmental impact.  相似文献

Binding of selected volatile butter flavor compounds to wheat vs soy-containing crackers was studied by inverse gas chromatography (IGC), sensory evaluation, and equilibrium sorption measurements. IGC data showed greater binding of gamma-butyrolactone and butyric acid to both types of crackers than either diacetyl or hexanal, possibly due to the involvement of stronger binding forces such as hydrogen bonding and even ionic forces in the case of butyric acid. The presence of soy proteins did not affect binding of diacetyl and hexanal but increased binding of strongly interacting compounds gamma-butyrolactone and especially butyric acid, probably through enhanced matrix polarity. In agreement with the IGC data, sensory evaluation results showed that the headspace aroma intensities were similar between the two diacetyl-flavored crackers, while they significantly differed between the butyric acid-flavored crackers. In addition, equilibrium sorption measurement data showed that binding of butyric acid was higher in the soy-containing cracker, but sorption of diacetyl to the two crackers did not significantly differ.  相似文献

As a means of assessing the relative contributions of watershed (terrestrial) and in-lake processes to overall lake/watershed alkalinity budgets, alkalinity production rates for watersheds and low alkalinity lakes were compiled from the literature and compared. Based on net alkalinity production data, derived using wet or bulk deposition data, mean and median alkalinity production for 20 watersheds in North America and Europe were 89 and 69 meq m?2 yr?1 (range 20 to 235 meq m?2 yr?1). For a subset of 10 watersheds with dry deposition data, terrestrial alkalinity production neutralized an additional 35 meq m?2 yr?1 of acidic deposition. For 11 lakes, mean and median in-lake alkalinity generation were 99 and 88 meq m?2 yr?1 (range 22 to 240 meq m?2 yr?1). Analysis of data indicates that for the low alkalinity systems described here, areal alkalinity production rates for watersheds and lakes are approximately equal. This relationship suggests that watershed area to lake area ratio can be used as a convenient estimator of the relative importance of watershed and in-lake sources of alkalinity for drainage lake systems. For precipitation-dominated seepage lakes and other systems where hydrology limits soil-water contact, hydrologic flow paths and residence times can be of overriding importance in determining alkalinity sources. For regions dominated by drainage lakes with high watershed area to lake area ratios (such as the Northeastern U.S.), however, alkalinity budgets are dominated by watershed processes. Omission of in-lake alkalinity consideration for most lakes in such regions would have little impact on computed alkalinity budgets or on predicted response to changes in acidic deposition loadings.  相似文献

This paper outlines an analysis of the spatial distribution of sediment production, delivery and yield in the Xihanshui River basin, South Gansu, China, using the modelling tools of SedNet (Prosser et al., 2001). This model can assess the delivery efficiency to downstream locations, as well as identifying locations with high rates of sediment production. Preliminary model experiments assist understanding of the spatial dynamics of these sediment processes and evaluation of the effectiveness of soil conservation practices since the mid-1980s. Three scenario years (dry, average and wet) from the 1983–2005 record are identified and modelled, and land use and management are represented in the model to reflect known changes since the 1980s. Results show hillslope erosion to be a dominant source of sediment supply, causing the latter to decrease ten-fold between 1984 and 1997/2000. Estimated bank erosion and floodplain deposition rates are sensitive to parameter values, but bank erosion appears less sensitive than hillslope supply to rainfall. The model can be used to assess net changes in floodplain storage; for default parameters, floodplain deposition rates are 25–200 times the rates of bank erosion depending on the climate scenario. Comparing simulation results with measured sediment yields at the three gauging stations indicates encouraging agreement in 2000. In 1984 (the wet year), the model under-predicts, suggesting that additional unmodelled sediment production processes, especially mass movement and gully erosion, may be important in wet years. Mass movement inventory data could close the gap between the high yields measured in the wet scenario year and the estimated yield due to hillslope erosion alone. In 1997 (the dry year), the model over-predicts; this suggests that the land use change parameters required to reflect the effects of conservation may not have been sufficient, implying that conservation has been generally effective, and that evidence of declining sediment yield is not simply a reflection of drier conditions.  相似文献

Net ecosystem exchange of carbon (FNEE) was estimated for a temperate broadleaf, evergreen eucalypt forest ecosystem at Tumbarumba in south-eastern Australia to investigate the processes controlling forest carbon sinks and their response to climate. Measurements at a range of temporal and spatial scales were used to make three different estimates of FNEE based on: (1) the difference between fluxes of carbon input by photosynthesis and output by autotrophic plus heterotrophic respiration, (2) changes over time in the carbon pools in the above- and below-ground biomass, soil and litter, and (3) micrometeorological flux measurements that provide a continuous estimate of the net exchange. A rigorous comparison of aggregated component fluxes and the net eddy fluxes within a flux tower source area was achieved based on an inventory of the site and a detailed sampling strategy. Measurements replicated in space and time provided mean values, confidence limits and patterns of variation of carbon pools and fluxes that allowed comparisons within known limits of uncertainty. As a result of comparisons between nighttime eddy flux and chamber measurements of respiration, a revised micrometeorological method was developed for estimating nighttime carbon flux using flux tower measurements. Uncertainty in the final estimate of FNEE was reduced through mutual constraints of each of these measurement approaches. FNEE for the period October 2001–September 2002, with average rainfall, was an uptake of 6.7 (5.1–8.3) tC ha?1 yr?1 estimated from component fluxes, and 5.4 (3.0–7.5) tC ha?1 yr?1 estimated from the revised eddy flux method. Biomass increment was 4.5 (3.7–5.4) tC ha?1 yr?1 and the remaining 0.9–2.2 tC ha?1 yr?1 could represent a carbon sink in the soil and litter pools or lie within the confidence limits of the measured fluxes. FNEE was reduced to ?0.1 to 2.4 tC ha?1 yr?1 during a period of drought and insect disturbance in October 2002–September 2003, with biomass increment being the main component reduced. The forest is a large carbon sink compared with other forest ecosystems, but this is subject to high-annual variability in response to climate variability and disturbance.  相似文献

Purpose  

Methanotrophs are an important group of methane (CH4)-oxidizing bacteria in the soil, which act as a major sink for the greenhouse gas, CH4. In grazed grassland, one of the ecologically most sensitive areas is the animal urine patch soil, which is a major source of both nitrate (NO3 ) leaching and nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions. Nitrification inhibitors, such as dicyandiamide (DCD), have been used to mitigate NO3 leaching and N2O emissions in grazed pastures. However, it is not clear if the high nitrogen loading rate in the animal urine patch soil and the use of nitrification inhibitors would have an impact on the abundance of methanotrophs in grazed grassland soils. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of animal urine and DCD on methanotroph abundance in grazed grassland soils.  相似文献
