In 1988 an experiment was established to stimulate the effect of windthrow on low-and high-productivity forest types in coastal British Columbia. It was hypothesized that site productivity may be improved by mixing the upper 1 m of the organic matter and mineral soil. Results of this study indicated that soil mixing (1) slightly increased soil pH and temperature on both forest types after 2 and 5 years, (2) decreased all soil nutrient availability indices on the high productivity type after 2 years, but resulted in no difference from the control after 5 years, and (3) decreased microbial activity and cellulose loss rate and most soil nutrient availability indices on the low-productivity type after 2 and 5 years. Soil mixing greatly reduced Gaultheria shallon above-ground biomass on both low- and high productivity forest types, whereas biomass of Epilobium angustifolium and other plant species increased slightly on the high-productivity type after 2 and 5 vears. Tsuga heterophylla was taller on high-productivity type and on mixed plots in both types after 2 and 5 years. Thuja plicata was taller on the high-productivity type after 5 years only. Some biologists have expressed concerns about the possible genetic impacts of translocation between stocks of barramundi Lates calcarifer (Bloch) in Australia. Recent genetic, biogeographical studies have provided an understanding of the evolution of the currently observed population structure in Australian barramundi by assessing the impacts of ice‐age, sea‐level changes on their distribution. These studies found that genetic differences between most barramundi populations are extremely small, have arisen in the past 17 000 years, and substantial migration and hybridization between eastern and western populations, isolated for at least 110 000 years, has occurred naturally. Some phenotypic support for these minor genetic differences can be inferred from the lack of adaptation to temperature in growth and survival responses of widely separated stocks (tropical and temperate). Based on a low level of genetic differentiation and high levels of gene flow between populations, with little evidence of local adaptation, translocation between populations should not pose a significant risk or problem. 相似文献

Visual imagery is used in a wide range of mental activities, ranging from memory to reasoning, and also plays a role in perception proper. The contribution of early visual cortex, specifically Area 17, to visual mental imagery was examined by the use of two convergent techniques. In one, subjects closed their eyes during positron emission tomography (PET) while they visualized and compared properties (for example, relative length) of sets of stripes. The results showed that when people perform this task, Area 17 is activated. In the other, repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (rTMS) was applied to medial occipital cortex before presentation of the same task. Performance was impaired after rTMS compared with a sham control condition; similar results were obtained when the subjects performed the task by actually looking at the stimuli. In sum, the PET results showed that when patterns of stripes are visualized, Area 17 is activated, and the rTMS results showed that such activation underlies information processing. 相似文献

Antibody diversity occurs randomly as B cells recombine their immunoglobulin (Ig) heavy- and light-chain genes during development. This process inevitably generates reactivity against self structures, and several mechanisms prevent the development of autoreactive B cells. We report here a role for the pre-B cell receptor, composed of Ig heavy and surrogate light chains, in the negative selection of cells expressing Ig heavy chains with the potential to generate autoantibodies. Surrogate light-chain-deficient (SLC-/-) mice harbored elevated levels of antinuclear antibodies (ANAs) in their serum and showed evidence of escape of pre-B cells expressing prototypic autoantibody heavy chains from negative selection, leading to mature autoantibody secreting CD21-CD23- B cells in the periphery. Thus, the pre-B cell receptor appears to censor the development of certain autoantibody-secreting cells and may represent an important factor in multifactorial autoimmune diseases. 相似文献

- Effective management of marine resources requires an understanding of the spatial distribution of biologically important communities.
- The north‐western Gulf of Mexico contains diverse marine ecosystems at a large range of depths and geographic settings. To better understand the distribution of these marine habitats across large geographic areas under consideration for marine sanctuary status, presence‐only predictive modelling was used.
- Results confirmed that local geographic characteristics can accurately predict the probability of occurrence for marine habitat types, and include a novel technique for assigning a single, most likely habitat in areas where multiple habitats are predicted.
- The highest resolution bathymetric data (10 m) available for the region was used to develop raster layers that represent characteristics that have been shown to influence species occurrence in other settings.
- A georeferenced historical photo record collected via remotely operated vehicle was classified according to six commonly found mesophotic habitats across the 18 reefs and banks under consideration for Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary boundary expansion.
- Using maximum entropy modelling, the influence of local geographic characteristics on the presence of these habitats was measured and a spatial probability distribution was developed for each habitat type across the study area.

Maturation and spawning performance of pond-reared Penaeus merguiensis in different combinations of temperature, light intensity and photoperiod 总被引:3,自引:0,他引:3
The combined effects of temperature (23 and 27 °C), light intensity (1100 and 2 lux or ≈ 21.5 and 0.04 μEinst m?2 s respectively) and photoperiod (10 h light/14 h dark and 14 h light/10 h dark) on ovarian maturation and spawning performance of ablated pond‐reared Penaeus merguiensis were investigated in a 51‐day experiment. The results showed that temperature was the most influential factor, followed by light intensity, whereas the effect of photoperiod was minor. As the maturation process progressed, the effects of temperature and light intensity became stronger while that of photoperiod became less significant. Temperature significantly affected all the reproductive parameters assessed. Prawns in the 27 °C treatments outperformed those in the 23 °C treatments (P < 0.05). The effect of light intensity was found to have a significant effect (P < 0.05) only on the proportion of spawners (prawns that spawned) and spawning rate. More prawns spawned at a higher rate under dim light (2 lux) than under strong light (1100 lux). Photoperiod affected only the proportion of prawns reaching stage III of ovarian development (P < 0.05). There were interactions between temperature and light intensity affecting the proportion of prawns reaching stage III and, although not significantly, the proportion of spawners (P = 0.177), fecundity (P = 0.134) and survival (P = 0.061). Overall, it is recommended that a combination of 27 °C, 2 lux and 10 h light/14 h dark is suitable for the maturation of pond‐reared P. merguiensis. There were indications that temperature can be used to control the rate of ovarian maturation. Also, it is possible to increase light intensity up to 1100 lux in P. merguiensis hatcheries if prawns are ablated. 相似文献

Critical thermal minima (CTMin) were determined for subadults of Penaeus merguiensis acclimated at 15, 18, 21 and 24 °C for 3 weeks. The effect of cooling rate on CTMin was also investigated. The CTMin of prawns from these respective acclimation groups were 5.3, 6.0, 7.4, 9.0 and 4.7, 5.4, 6.0, 7.3 °C at the cooling rate of 1 °C h?1 and 3 °C h?1 respectively. Both acclimation temperature and cooling rate had a significant effect (P < 0.01) on the CTMin. Observation during the acclimation period showed that the growth rate of prawns acclimated at 24 °C was much higher than those acclimated at 21, 18 and 15 °C. The results indicate that P. merguiensis can overwinter in aquaculture ponds in south‐east Queensland, Australia, or other subtropical areas and attain good growth if simple overwintering facilities are available. 相似文献
