An irrigation study was conducted to determine the effects of implementing different irrigation practices on growth and yields of papaya plants in south Florida. Treatments included using automated switching tensiometers based on soil water status, irrigation based on ET calculated from historic weather data and a set schedule irrigation regime. The study consisted of two trials (2006-2007 and 2008-2009). Water volumes applied, plant height and diameter, leaf gas exchange, leaf petiole nutrient levels, fruit yields and fruit total soluble solids were measured throughout the study. For both trials, significantly more water was applied in the set schedule irrigation treatment than in all other treatments; historic ET and soil water based treatments received only about 31-36% of the water applied in the set schedule irrigation. Trunk diameter and plant height per unit water volume applied values for the set schedule treatment were significantly lower than those from all other treatments during both trials. The set schedule treatment in both trials also had the lowest crop production water use efficiency (CP-WUE); CP-WUE values among all other treatments were generally not significantly different from each other. Soil water and historic ET-based irrigation methods were identified as more sustainable practices compared to set schedule irrigation due to the lower water volumes applied while maintaining plant nutrient content, growth, photosynthetic rates, and fruit yields for this production system. 相似文献

The aim of this work was to study the influence of process parameters and the starter culture on the characteristics of wheat sourdough by using response surface methodology. Influence of fermentation temperature (16–32°C), ash content of flour (0.6–1.8%), and fermentation time (6–20 hr) were considered as independent factors and their effects were studied in sourdough fermented with Lactobacillus plantarum, L. brevis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae, or with a combination of yeast and lactic acid bacteria. Formation of acidity, free amino acids, and volatile compounds were considered the main responses. A possibility to enhance formation of potential flavor compounds and precursors without excessive acidity formation in wheat sourdoughs was established. The total amount of amino acids increased by 25–50%, depending on the strain and fermentation conditions. The total amount of volatile compounds increased seven‐ to 100‐fold, depending on the strain and fermentation conditions. Sourdough started with S. cerevisiae was an effective way to optimize the amount of volatile compounds without excessive acidity formation in appropriate processing conditions. Ash content of flour and fermentation time were the most significant factors to modify metabolic activity of wheat sourdoughs. Frequent interactions between the studied factors were observed on the formation of acidity, amino acids, and volatile compounds with most of the strains studied. The production of piscine viruses, in particular of koi herpesvirus (KHV, CyHV‐3) and infectious salmon anaemia virus (ISAV), is still challenging due to the limited susceptibility of available cell lines to these viruses. A number of cell lines from different fish species were compared to standard diagnostic cell lines for KHV and ISAV regarding their capability to exhibit a cytopathic effect (CPE) and to accumulate virus. Two cell lines, so far undescribed, appeared to be useful for diagnostic purposes. Fr994, a cell line derived from ovaries of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss), produced constantly high ISA virus (ISAV) titres and developed a pronounced CPE even at high cell passage numbers, while standard cell lines are reported to gradually loose these properties upon propagation. Another cell line isolated from the head kidney of common carp (Cyprinus carpio), KoK, showed a KHV induced CPE earlier than the standard cell line used for diagnostics. A third cell line, named Fin‐4, established from the fin epithelium of rainbow trout did not promote efficient replication of tested viruses, but showed antigen sampling properties and might be useful as an in vitro model for virus uptake or phagocytosis. 相似文献

Dietary intervention may be a valuable strategy to optimize the intra-articular environment in young horses to prolong their performance career. To test the hypothesis that dietary supplementation of a Saccharomyces cerevisiae fermentation product would reduce markers of joint inflammation and increase markers of cartilage metabolism following a single inflammatory insult, Quarter Horse yearlings (mean ± SD; 9 ± 1.0 mo) were balanced by age, sex, body weight (BW), and farm of origin and randomly assigned to the following treatment groups: 1.25% BW/d (dry matter basis) custom-formulated concentrate only (CON; n = 9) or concentrate top-dressed with 21 g/d S. cerevisiae fermentation product (SCFP; n = 10) for 98 d. Horses had ad libitum access to Coastal bermudagrass hay. On day 84, one randomly selected radial carpal joint from each horse was injected with 0.5 ng lipopolysaccharide (LPS) solution. The remaining carpal joint was injected with sterile lactated Ringer’s solution as a contralateral control. Synovial fluid obtained before supplementation (day 0) and on day 84 at preinjection hour 0 and 6, 12, 24, 168, and 336 h postinjection was analyzed for prostaglandin E2 (PGE2), carboxypropeptide of type II collagen (CPII), and collagenase cleavage neopeptide (C2C) by commercial assays. Rectal temperature, heart rate, respiration rate, carpal surface temperature, and carpal circumference were recorded prior to each sample collection and for 24 h postinjection. Data were analyzed using linear models with repeated measures. From day 0 to 84, synovial C2C declined (P ≤ 0.01) and the CPII:C2C ratio increased (P ≤ 0.01) in all horses with no effect of diet. In response to intra-articular LPS, synovial PGE2 increased by hour 6 (P ≤ 0.01) and returned to baseline by hour 336; CPII increased by hour 12, remained elevated through hour 168 (P ≤ 0.01), and returned to baseline by hour 336; and C2C increased by hour 6 (P ≤ 0.01) but did not return to baseline through hour 336 (P ≤ 0.01). Post-intra-articular injection, PGE2 levels were lower in SCFP than CON horses (P = 0.01) regardless of injection type. Synovial CPII and the CPII:C2C ratio demonstrated stability during the LPS challenge in SCFP compared with CON horses (P ≤ 0.01). Clinical parameters were not influenced by diet but increased in response to repeated arthrocentesis (P ≤ 0.01). Dietary SCFP may favorably modulate intra-articular inflammation following an acute stressor and influence cartilage turnover in young horses. 相似文献

To clarify the clinicopathological features of canine epulides, 189 epulides were reviewed retrospectively. The incidence of the fibromatous, ossifying, acanthomatous and giant cell epulides were 56.6% (107/189), 23.3% (44/189), 18.0% (34/189) and 2.1% (4/189), respectively. The average ages of dogs with fibromatous, ossifying, acanthomatous and giant cell epulides were 8.8, 8.4, 7.8 and 8.7 years, respectively. The male/female ratio of dogs with the acanthomatous epulis (0.8) was lower than those of dogs with the fibromatous (1.9), ossifying (1.4) and giant cell epulis (3.0). There were slight breed differences among the types of epulides. The most noticeable result was that 38.2% of the acanthomatous epulis occurred in Shetland sheepdogs. 43.9% of the fibromatous epulis and 52% of the ossifying epulides arose around maxillary premolars, while 58.8% of the acanthomatous epulis arose around the mandibular canines. Dogs with the fibromatous and ossifying epulides had more severe dental plaque deposition than those with the acanthomatous epulides. Few of the fibromatous (6/104) or ossifying epulides (4/44) showed recurrence after excision, while the majority (21/23) of the acanthomatous epulides showed rapid and repeated recurrences after surgical excision. Epulides treated with hemimandibulectomy or bleomycin chemotherapy did not recur. Giant cell epulides showed no recurrence after surgical removal. These results indicate that the acanthomatous epulis differed from other types of epulides in biological and morphological features and poor prognosis. 相似文献
