Objective To determine reference ranges for healthy yearling farmed saltwater crocodiles by performing routine biochemical and haematological laboratory tests on blood samples.
Design A clinico-pathological study.
Procedure Blood samples were collected from 120 healthy yearlings from four Northern Territory crocodile farms and body weight and length were measured. All animals had been fasted for 2 days before sample collection. Routine biochemical analytes were determined on 120 samples and haematological values determined on 30 samples (from one farm).
Results Reference ranges for biochemical and haemato-logical values were determined for farmed yearling saltwater crocodiles in the Northern Territory.
Conclusion The results were comparable with published reference ranges for other crocodilian species. Other published results of haematological values from saltwater crocodiles were from very young (6-week-old) hatchlings and older (2- to 4-year-old) crocodiles. Differences in values were presumed to be caused by age-related factors.  相似文献

An 8-year-old Hanoverian gelding was examined because of urine dribbling and urethral obstruction. Mild proprioceptive deficits of the left hind limb were evident during neurologic examination. Ultrasonography per rectum revealed dilatation of the pelvic portion of the urethra. Endoscopy of the urethra revealed 2 webs of tissue: 1 was located 10 cm proximal to the external urethral opening; the other was located 65 cm proximal to the external urethral opening and prevented passage of the endoscope into the urinary bladder. The mass was ablated with a neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet laser, using a transendoscopic noncontact technique. On follow-up examination 6 months after laser surgery, an endoscope could easily be passed into the bladder, and no urethral web was seen. The horse was able to void a stream of urine but continued to dribble urine intermittently. The proximal location of the urethral lesion in this horse would have made use of traditional surgical methods problematic, whereas transendoscopic laser photoablation was easy and effective.  相似文献

The advantages and disadvantages of various surgical lasers are discussed. Included are aspects of laser safety, anesthesia and analgesia considerations for laser surgery, and diagnostic considerations. Horses with lesions such as ethmoid hematomas, nasal polyps, and lymphoid masses are ideal candidates for laser treatment. AIM: To estimate the incidence of clinical mastitis and the frequency of isolation of mastitis-causing organisms from clinical cases in one lactation season (July 2005 to May 2006) on 14 dairy farms from the Northland region of New Zealand.

METHODS: Cases of clinical mastitis were determined by trained farm personnel who recorded the identity of affected cows. Pooled milk samples from affected quarter(s) were aseptically collected by the farm personnel, for microbiology. Mean numbers of affected cows and quarters were compared at the population and farm level per 305 cow-days-at-risk (DAR).

RESULTS: One or more cases of clinical mastitis occurred in 559/3,765 (14.8%) lactating cows. The average incidence of clinical mastitis was 0.19 cases per 305 DAR. The incidence in rear quarters (56.2%) was 1.3 times (p=0.027) that of front quarters (43.8%). The incidence of clinical mastitis and numbers of affected quarters were signifi cantly infl uenced by the stage of lactation (higher in early lactation), age (higher in older cows) and farm. At the cow level, the most common isolates were Staphylococcus aureus (23.7%) and Streptococcus uberis (23.3%). No causative organisms were identifi ed in 19.9% of the samples. Each cow had an average of 1.8 quarters affected during a case of clinical mastitis.

CONCLUSIONS: This study demonstrated a higher incidence of staphylococcal clinical mastitis on dairy farms from Northland than has been reported in other regions of New Zealand.  相似文献

Exclusion of cattle by fencing has been proposed to alleviate possible negative grazing impacts on hydrologic, water quality, and cover habitat conditions within Sierra Nevada meadows used by Yosemite toads (Bufo canorus Camp) for breeding. Our objectives were to: 1) determine associations between breeding pool habitat conditions and use of potential breeding pools by toads; and 2) determine how habitat conditions respond to cattle exclusion treatments on the Sierra National Forest, California. We randomly selected two toad occupied and two unoccupied breeding pools in each of nine meadows for this study (n = 36 breeding pools). After baseline data collection in 2006, three meadow fencing treatments were implemented over the course of 3 yr. Treatments were fencing to exclude cattle from the entire meadow; fencing to exclude cattle from toad breeding and rearing areas, with grazing allowed in the remaining unfenced portion of the meadow; and cattle grazing allowed across entire meadow. We monitored hydrologic, water quality, and cover habitat variables as well as toad occupancy during the breeding seasons of 2006 through 2008. Concentrations of water quality constituents were uniformly low all years regardless of treatment. Occupied pools were shallower, warmer, and more nitrogen enriched than unoccupied breeding pools. We found no evidence of improved toad breeding pool habitat conditions following fencing compared to standard US Forest Service grazing management.  相似文献

In various species, sex, hormonal treatments and oestrous-cycle stage have been shown to affect the animal's response in behavioural tests. Few such studies have been performed in the horse. The main aim of the present study was to investigate whether oestrous-cycle stage affects mares' response to a novel object test and isolation test and, in part, to study whether mares, assumed to suffer from oestrous-related behavioural problems, respond differently in these tests when compared with controls. Twelve mares were tested twice, in oestrus and dioestrus, in a crossover design. Seven behavioural and two heart rate variables were measured for the novel object test and two heart rate variables for the isolation test. Oestrous-cycle stage and whether a mare was classified as a 'problem' mare did not affect the mare's response. However, test order, i.e. the cycle stage a mare was tested in first, affected its reaction. This effect could partly be explained by significant differences between test occasions 1 and 2 in three behavioural variables and one heart rate variable (p < 0.05) in the novel object test. The mares explored the novel object more and had a higher mean heart rate in the first test. Exploring the novel object more could largely be attributed to those mares tested in dioestrus first, perhaps indicating that the mares in oestrus were less receptive to the novel object. The reason for the differences between test occasions could be an effect of learning or habituation.  相似文献

Genetic evaluation relies on pedigree information to account for the trait information on individuals and their relatives. Recording pedigrees may place unfavorable restrictions on the management of breeding populations, such as the use of single-sire mating groups and the observation of parturition. The use of DNA marker information is an alternative method to identify parents, but it is difficult to assign the parents unambiguously for all progeny in extensively farmed livestock without the use of very many markers. We present methods that use DNA information on parentage within a genetic evaluation system that allow for genotyping errors and for the parentage information to be incomplete, with probabilities assigned to possible parent pairs (i.e., fractional parentage assignment). Two of these methods use a computing strategy that circumvents the high memory requirements associated with the application of previous methods designed for use with fractional parentage assignment. This strategy has an additional advantage of allowing the same statistical models to be used in the evaluation as with recorded pedigrees. The use of DNA marker-based parentage for genetic evaluation is associated with lower genetic gain (at the same survival levels) than by using the true pedigree. This decrease in gain depends on a number of factors, including trait heritability and the DNA markers used. The methods we have described show how DNA marker information could be used to replace traditional pedigree recording.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To compare blood glucose concentrations obtained using a point-of-care (POC) analyzer, 5 portable blood glucose meters (PBGM), and a color reagent test strip with concentrations obtained using a reference method, and to compare glucose concentrations obtained using fresh blood samples in the PBGM with concentrations obtained using blood anticoagulated with lithium heparin. DESIGN: Case series. SAMPLE POPULATION: 110 blood samples from 34 dogs; glucose concentration of the samples ranged from 41 to 596 mg/dl. PROCEDURE: Logistic regression was used to compare blood glucose concentrations obtained with the various devices with reference method concentrations. Ease of use was evaluated subjectively. Percentage of times a clinical decision would have been altered if results of each of these methods had been used, rather than results of the reference method, was calculated. RESULTS: For 3 of the PBGM, blood glucose concentrations obtained with fresh blood were not significantly different from concentrations obtained with blood samples anticoagulated with lithium heparin. None of the devices provided results statistically equivalent to results of the reference method, but the POC analyzer was more accurate than the others. For some samples, reliance on results of the PBGM or the color test strip would have resulted in erroneous clinical decisions. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Although commercially available PBGM and color test strips provided blood glucose concentrations reasonably close to those obtained with reference methods, some devices were more accurate than others. Use of results from these devices could lead to erroneous clinical decisions in some cases.  相似文献

Four esophageal- and ruminal-cannulated Angus steers (avg weight, 308 kg) were used to investigate how salivation is affected by the administration of purified slaframine (SF; 1-acetoxy-6-aminooctahydroindolizine), a cholinergic secretagogue isolated from Rhizoctonia leguminicola. Steers were fed a concentrate diet at twice the net energy requirement for maintenance in hourly increments. In trial 1, a single injection of SF was administered to four steers intramuscularly at 0, 6, 12 and 24-micrograms/kg body weight (BW) in a 4 X 4 Latin-square design. Saliva was collected via esophageal cannula at 15-min intervals 30 min after each feeding, weighted, sampled and reinfused via ruminal cannula over a 10-h period. At 12- and 24-micrograms SF/kg BW, salivary flow was 31 to 43% greater (P less than .01) than at 0- or 6-micrograms SF/kg. Response peaked within the first 3 h and returned to baseline levels at 8 h. Buffering capacity and pH of saliva were not different (P greater than .10); however, osmolality and Na concentration increased and K concentration decreased (P less than .10) as salivation rates increased. Feed intake of steers did not appear affected at any level of SF administration. In trial 2, 0-, 12- and 24-micrograms SF/kg BW were repeatedly administered intramuscularly to three steers in a 3 X 3 Latin-square design at 8-h intervals for 24 h. Salivary flow was measured and sampled over the entire 24-h period, as in trial 1. Flow rates were increased 50 to 70% (P less than .01) by SF treatment.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The litter of six turkey hen flocks was sampled using the drag-swab technique to determine the effectiveness of this method in detecting Salmonella arizona. Two flocks with the lowest biosecurity standards were found to have S. arizona. Results showed that the drag-swab technique can provide a sensitive and cost-effective measure of S. arizona infection within a flock.  相似文献
