Osteolytic osteomyelitis associated with visceral leishmaniasis in a dog

A dog was examined with a history of weight loss and lameness of the left hind limb. A painful response to examination of the left hip joint, and lymphadenopathy were noted. Amastigote forms of Leishmania sp. were observed by cytology in samples from the popliteus lymph node, and anti-Leishmania sp. antibodies at a titer of 1:640 were detected in serum by indirect immunofluorescence. Radiological changes included osteolysis and a periosteal proliferative reaction in the left femoral greater trochanter. These changes were histologically characterized as an osteolytic granulomatous osteomyelitis associated with amastigotes within macrophages. Non-decalcified fragments of the periosteum were processed for immunohistochemistry, observed with prominent immunolabelling of amastigotes of Leishmania sp. within macrophages. The diagnosis was further confirmed by positive PCR for Leishmania sp., belonging to the Leishmania donovani complex.     

Length-weight relationship of pond-raised milkfish in the Philippines

Milkfish from culture ponds were measured in the provinces of Bataan, Iloilo, and Pangasinan over the period December 28th, 1970, to November 9th, 1971. The overall length-weight relationship was computed from 6 304 measurements giving the equation: log W = ?5.0463 + 2.98895 log L, where W = weight in g and L = total length in mm. A table is presented giving calculated weights for milkfish in the length range 80–400 mm, which can be used to compute relative condition factors. Data were grouped according to lengths, province, food system, and months for separate comparisons.     

Nitrogen maintenance requirements and potential for nitrogen retention of pullets in growth phase

Experiments were conducted to estimate daily N maintenance requirements (NMRs) and the genetic potential for daily N retention (NR_maxT) of pullets in growth phase. Three nitrogen balance trials were conducted, and a total of 48 Hy‐line W‐36 pullets were used in each trial in age periods (starter: 14–28, grower: 56–70 and developer: 98–112 days). The treatments consisted of six graded levels of nitrogen in the diets (L1 = 8, L2 = 16, L3 = 24, L4 = 32, L5 = 40 and L6 = 48 g N/kg of feed), formulated using the dilution technique. The regression analyses between nitrogen intake and nitrogen excretion were performed to fit the exponential function and to determine the NMR. The daily NMRs that were estimated at 294, 331 and 355 mg/BW_kg^0.67 for the initial, grower and developer periods, respectively, were applied for further calculation of NR_maxT as the threshold value of the function between N intake and daily N balance. The NR_maxT was estimated by a statistical procedure following several iteration steps by the Levenberg–Marquardt algorithm until the sum of the squares of the residual was minimized. The NR_maxT was estimated at 3,200, 2,633 and 1,826 mg/BW_kg^0.67 for starter, grower and developer periods respectively. The determined model parameters were the precondition for modelling of the amino acid requirement based on an exponential N‐utilization model and depended on performance and dietary amino acid efficiency. This procedure will be further developed and applied in the subsequent study.     

The first report of Hepatozoon sp. (Apicomplexa: Hepatozoidae) in neotropical felids from Brazil

In order to investigate the occurrence of Hepatozoon infection in Neotropical felids from Brazil, blood from the jugular or cephalic vein was taken from 29 non-domestic felids including ocelot (Leopardus pardalis), little spotted cat (Leopardus tigrinus), margay (Leopardus wiedii), and jaguarondi (Puma yagouaroundi) from the Northeast region of Brazil. Hepatozoon infection was confirmed by light microscopy and molecular techniques. The results showed five naturally infected felids. Partial sequences of the 18S rRNA gene of the Hepatozoon sp. from these felids were further analyzed. Sequences revealed that the isolates found are closely related to Hepatozoon sp. from domestic cats in Spain. Hepatozoon species from Neotropical felids were identified molecularly and characterized for the first time. This is also the first report of Hepatozoon infection in a little spotted cat.
