This is the first morpho-histological comparison of guanaco ovaries between reproductive (long-days) and non-reproductive (short-days) seasons, and oestrogen receptor-alpha (ERα) and beta (ERβ) detection. Different stages of follicle development were found in the cortical area, but no corpus luteum was detected. The size and frequency of antral follicles and large atretic follicles were higher in long-day ovaries than short-days, consistent with ovarian activity in this season. Differential expression of ERα and ERβ was observed in follicles at different stages of development between short and long days. These data reveal histological and molecular differences between reproductive and non-reproductive seasons of guanaco ovaries. 相似文献
Potassium has important physiological functions in eucalypt plantations, increasing their productivity when applied to soil via mineral fertilizers. There is interest in identifying alternative sources to KCl owing to its high cost and limited reserves. The aim of the study was to test the effect of replacing KCl with NaCl and phonolite rock powder. Two comparisons were made: (1) application of 283 kg ha?1 of KCl compared with that of 2125 kg ha?1 of phonolite rock powder (equivalent to 170 kg ha?1 of K2O in both treatments); (2) application of 139 kg ha?1 of NaCl compared with that of 183 kg ha?1 of KCl (equivalent to 2.33 kmol Na and K, respectively). Radial growth, soil water content, leaf water potential (Ψ), accumulated transpiration, stem volume and biomass increment, as well as water use efficiency (WUE) were evaluated. In the first comparison, both fertilizations presented equal values for all characteristics evaluated. In the second, the accumulated transpiration in trees fertilized with KCl was 17% higher than that in plants fertilized with NaCl. In contrast, the WUE was 20% higher in the trees fertilized with NaCl than in those fertilized with KCl, reflecting the lower water consumption for the same increment in stem volume and biomass. We conclude that phonolite rock powder and NaCl are possible substitutes for conventional K fertilization performed with KCl.
A new method was developed to simultaneously measure 2 acute-phase proteins (APPs) by time-resolved immunofluorometry. The assay, based on double-label quantification of haptoglobin (Hp) and C-reactive protein (CRP) in meat juice samples from pigs, was constructed by use of a combination of europium and samarium chelate lanthanides as labels. Meat juice samples from 154 pigs were used for analytic and clinical validation of the assay through determination of precision, accuracy, limit of detection, and quantification. The analytic performance of the assay was satisfactory, with good intra-assay and interassay precision and accuracy. The levels of Hp and CRP were increased in the meat juice samples of diseased animals compared with healthy ones. According to the results, higher sensitivity could be achieved if the cut-off values of both proteins were taken into account for clinical relevance rather than used individually. Since the dual assay saved both time and sample, it could be used as a rapid and sensitive screening test in porcine production. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To evaluate, by use of population pharmacokinetics, the disposition of marbofloxacin in the aqueous humor after IV administration in dogs and identify its potential usefulness in the prophylaxis and treatment of intraocular infection. ANIMALS: 63 dogs. METHODS: Dogs received a single dose of marbofloxacin (2 mg x kg(-1), IV) at various time intervals before cataract surgery. Aqueous humor and blood samples were collected at the beginning of surgery. Marbofloxacin concentrations were measured by high-pressure liquid chromatography. Data were analyzed with a nonlinear mixed-effect model and, by use of population pharmacokinetic parameters, the time course of aqueous humor concentration was simulated for single doses of 3, 4, and 5.5 mg x kg(-1) IV. Pharmacodynamic surrogate markers and measured aqueous humor concentrations were used to predict in vivo antimicrobial activity. RESULTS: A maximum marbofloxacin concentration of 0.41 +/- 0.17 microg x mL(-1) was reached in the aqueous humor 3.5 hours after IV administration. In the post-distributive phase, marbofloxacin disappeared from aqueous humor with a half-life of 780 minutes. The percentage penetration into the aqueous humor was 38%. Predictors of antimicrobial effects of marbofloxacin (2 mg x kg(-1), IV) indicated that growth of the enterobacteriaceae and certain staphylococcal species would be inhibited in the aqueous humor. Marbofloxacin administered IV at a dose of 5.5 mg x kg(-1) would be predicted to inhibit growth of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and all strains of staphylococci but would not eradicate streptococcal infections. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Marbofloxacin administered IV can penetrate the aqueous humor of canine eyes and may be suitable for prophylaxis or treatment of certain anterior chamber infections. 相似文献
To study adherence of Actinobacillus pleuropneumoniae to porcine lower respiratory epithelium, a cell culture model was developed using primary cultures of porcine lung epithelial cells (LEC). Adherence assays were performed and results were compared with data obtained with swine kidney cells (SK6). A. pleuropneumoniae efficiently adhered to LEC with up to 62 bacteria per cell after 2h of incubation. Reference strain of serotype 3 (R3) adhered better to LEC than reference strains of serotypes 1 (R1), 7 (R7) and 8 (R8). Overall the adherence to LEC was more rapid and up to 30-fold more efficient than adherence to SK6 cells. In search for the mechanism involved in the adherence event, we tested the effect of LPS which has previously been demonstrated to cause adherence of the pathogen to upper respiratory epithelium. Adherence assays with LPS transposon mutants demonstrated unaltered (mutant with modification in core/lipid A moiety) or even three-fold more adherence (mutants lacking O antigen) compared to the parent micro-organisms. Purified LPS of strains R1, R3, R7 and R8 did not inhibit adherence of R8 to LEC either, suggesting that LPS and particularly the O-antigen are not essential for adherence of A. pleuropneumoniae to LEC. The efficient, LPS-independent adherence of A. pleuropneumoniae to LEC cells indicates that A. pleuropneumoniae may carry different, cell type-specific adhesins and that primary cultures of lower respiratory epithelium are valuable infection models in studying A. pleuropneumoniae pathogenesis. 相似文献
OBJECTIVE: To describe the clinical symptoms of 10 cases of superficial nonhealing corneal ulcers in horses and to evaluate the results of grid keratotomy in these patients. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: Ten horses with superficial nonhealing corneal ulceration in one eye. PROCEDURE: The signalment, history and clinical symptoms are reported of 10 patients with superficial nonhealing corneal ulcers during the period from August 2003 to February 2005. Grid keratotomy was performed in all cases. In addition, the surgical procedure of grid keratotomy and response to therapy are described. RESULTS: Horses generally responded well to grid keratotomy (eight cases healed after one grid keratotomy and one horse healed after a second grid keratotomy; one case was not available for follow-up). Only 2/10 had discomfort after treatment and only 2/9 had some degree of scarring after treatment. The healing time, which was known in seven cases, averaged 8.4 days (+/- SD 4). CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Grid keratotomy is an appropriate option for treatment of superficial nonhealing corneal ulcers in horses. The procedure is simple to perform. It generally induces a rapid and uncomplicated healing of the cornea. Only in a limited number of cases does a small amount of scarring occur. 相似文献
