Magnetic fields at uranus

The magnetic field experiment on the Voyager 2 spacecraft revealed a strong planetary magnetic field of Uranus and an associated magnetosphere and fully developed bipolar masnetic tail. The detached bow shock wave in the solar wind supersonic flow was observed upstream at 23.7 Uranus radii (1 R(U) = 25,600 km) and the magnetopause boundary at 18.0 R(U), near the planet-sun line. A miaximum magnetic field of 413 nanotesla was observed at 4.19 R(U ), just before closest approach. Initial analyses reveal that the planetary magnetic field is well represented by that of a dipole offset from the center of the planet by 0.3 R(U). The angle between Uranus' angular momentum vector and the dipole moment vector has the surprisingly large value of 60 degrees. Thus, in an astrophysical context, the field of Uranus may be described as that of an oblique rotator. The dipole moment of 0.23 gauss R(3)(U), combined with the large spatial offset, leads to minimum and maximum magnetic fields on the surface of the planet of approximately 0.1 and 1.1 gauss, respectively. The rotation period of the magnetic field and hence that of the interior of the planet is estimated to be 17.29+/- 0.10 hours; the magnetotail rotates about the planet-sun line with the same period. Thelarge offset and tilt lead to auroral zones far from the planetary rotation axis poles. The rings and the moons are embedded deep within the magnetosphere, and, because of the large dipole tilt, they will have a profound and diurnally varying influence as absorbers of the trapped radiation belt particles.     

提高梅花鹿再生茸产量的研究

于１９９０年３月－６月分别在黑龙江省海林县三部落鹿和吉林省松花湖鹿场进行试验。用止血，提高动物营养和人工降雨增加鹿舍相对湿度的三种方法对梅花鹿再生茸生产生长的影响和潜力进行了研究。研究结果表明：单纯进行锯茸止血或提高动物营养对再生茸的产量没有明显影响（Ｐ＞０．０５）；在止血和提高动物营养的基础上同时进行人工降雨，可明显中再生茸的产量１７５±２８ｇ（Ｐ＜０．０１），使锯口愈合时间提前４．６±０．４ｄ     

Potassium Channels in Samanea saman Protoplasts Controlled by Phytochrome and the Biological Clock

Leaflet movement in legumes depends on rhythmic, light-regulated ion fluxes in opposing regions of the leaf-moving organ. In flexor and extensor protoplasts from Samanea saman Merrill, opening and closing of K(+) channels were rhythmic in constant darkness. When channels were open in flexor protoplasts they were closed in extensor protoplasts, and vice versa. The rhythms were shifted by a delay in the onset of constant darkness, a response typical of endogenous circadian rhythms. During the light period, the channels in flexor protoplasts were sensitive to red light that was followed by premature darkness; phytochrome was implicated as the photoreceptor.     

The Ischigualasto Tetrapod Assemblage (Late Triassic, Argentina) and 40Ar/39Ar Dating of Dinosaur Origins

(40)Ar/(39)Ar dating of sanidine from a bentonite interbedded in the Ischigualasto Formation of northwestern Argentina yielded a plateau age of 227.8 +/- 0.3 million years ago. This middle Carnian age is a direct calibration of the Ischigualasto tetrapod assemblage, which includes some of the best known early dinosaurs. This age shifts last appearances of Ischigualasto taxa back into the middle Carnian, diminishing the magnitude of the proposed late Carnian tetrapod extinction event. By 228 million years ago, the major dinosaurian lineages were established, and theropods were already important constituents of the carnivorous tetrapod guild in the Ischigualasto-Villa Unión Basin. Dinosaurs as a whole remained minor components of tetrapod faunas for at least another 10 million years.     

Myoglobin diffusion in bovine heart muscle

The rotational mobility of myoglobin in situ was determined by proton nuclear magnetic resonance line width measurements of a characteristic myoglobin resonance observed in bovine heart muscle spectra. The protein diffuses intracellularly at nearly half the rate observed in dilute solution. This high mobility allows the oxygenated form of myoglobin to contribute significantly to the overall diffusive flux of oxygen in respiring heart muscle.     

Temperatures, winds, and composition in the saturnian system

Stratospheric temperatures on Saturn imply a strong decay of the equatorial winds with altitude. If the decrease in winds reported from recent Hubble Space Telescope images is not a temporal change, then the features tracked must have been at least 130 kilometers higher than in earlier studies. Saturn's south polar stratosphere is warmer than predicted from simple radiative models. The C/H ratio on Saturn is seven times solar, twice Jupiter's. Saturn's ring temperatures have radial variations down to the smallest scale resolved (100 kilometers). Diurnal surface temperature variations on Phoebe suggest a more porous regolith than on the jovian satellites.     

Feynman's path-integral approach for intense-laser-atom interactions

Atoms interacting with intense laser fields can emit electrons and photons of very high energies. An intuitive and quantitative explanation of these highly nonlinear processes can be found in terms of a generalization of classical Newtonian particle trajectories, the so-called quantum orbits. Very few quantum orbits are necessary to reproduce the experimental results. These orbits are clearly identified, thus opening the way for an efficient control as well as previously unknown applications of these processes.     

Vision and development in Trichoderma atroviride

Phototropism, the induction of carotenogenesis and reproductive structures, and resetting of the circadian rhythm are controlled by blue light. Trichoderma is used as a photomorphogenetic model due to its ability to conidiate upon exposure to light. In total darkness, T. atroviride grows indefinitely as a mycelium provided that nutrients are not limiting. However, nutrient deprivation and light trigger the conidiation process. Scent organ development in creatonotos moths: regulation by pyrrolizidine alkaloids

7-Hydroxy-6,7-dihydro-5H-pyrolizine-1-carboxaldehyde is the major volatile component of the scent organs in males of two species of Creatonotos (Lepidoptera, Arctiidae). The biosynthesis of this presumed pheromone depends on the presence of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in plants that are ingested by the larvae. In addition, these secondary plant substances control the morphogenesis of the scent organs. This morphogenetic effect of an alkaloid has not been observed previously.
