 The within-field variability of soil mineral nitrogen (Nmin) in a grazed grassland of 8000 m2 was examined. NO3 -N concentrations were characterized by a high spatial variability. This can be explained by the uneven deposition of animal excreta. All NH4 +-N as well as NO3 -N values were lognormally distributed, before and after the grazing season. At the end of the grazing season the largest part of the variability of NO3 -N was found for NO3 -N concentrations measured within a distance of a few metres. A high variability for NO3 -N over very short distances was also indicated by a large nugget variance. During the grazing season, observed mean Nmin values increased from 22 to 132 kg N ha–1. Regions with clearly higher NO3 -N concentrations could be identified. These zones matched with the drinking place and the entrance of the pasture, places which were more frequently visited than others. High residual N levels in autumn led to relatively high losses of N, mostly by leaching, during the subsequent drainage period. Knowing the variability of Nmin, the number of samples needed to estimate the average Nmin in a field could be calculated for different probabilities and various degrees of precision. From the spatial distribution of the Nmin concentrations and the restrictions imposed by the new European decree, adapted fertilizer strategies can be proposed at least for places where systematically higher Nmin concentrations can be expected. The adoption of the 7th amendment of the European Cosmetic Directive 76/768/EEC requires any cosmetic product containing any of 26 raw materials identified by the Scientific Committee on Cosmetic Products and Non-Food Products intended for Consumers as likely to cause a contact allergy when present above certain trigger levels to be declared on the package label. Of these 26, 24 are volatile and can be analyzed by GC. This paper describes a method for the quantitative analysis of these volatile raw materials in perfume ingredients as well as complex perfume compositions. The method uses sequential dual-column GC-MS analysis. The full-scan data acquired minimize the false-positive and false-negative identifications that can be observed with alternate methods based on data acquired in the SIM mode. For each sample, allergen levels are determined on both columns sequentially, leading to two numerical results for each allergen. Quantification limits for each allergen in a perfume mixture based on the analysis of a standard are <4 mg/kg. This is well below the level that would trigger label declaration on the consumer good. Calibration curves for all allergens are linear (r > 0.999) and stable for multiple days. Studies on perfumes spiked with multiple allergens at 30, 50, and 70 mg/kg show recoveries close to nominal values.  相似文献

Diluted pig manure was treated in an algal-bacterial system in outdoor algal ponds. The pond effluent was fed once or twice daily to an indoor 501 rotifer culture. Depending on the algal-bacterial biomass concentration in the pond effluent, rotifer cultures containing 200–580 animals per ml could be obtained. Biological, physical and chemical data on the algal pond and the rotifer culture effluent were recorded.  相似文献

During the last decade, the concept of One Health has become the international standard for zoonotic disease control. This call for transdisciplinary collaboration between professionals in human, animal and environmental health has produced several successes in zoonotic disease control, surveillance and research. Despite the lack of a clear definition, a shared agenda or institutional governance, One Health has proven to be a fruitful idea. Due to its ambiguity, the One Health concept functions as a boundary object: by leaving room for interpretation to fit different purposes, it facilitates cooperation. In many cases, this results in the promotion of health of humans, animals and the environment. However, there are also situations in which this mutual benefit of a One Health approach is not that evident, for instance, when healthy animals are culled to protect public health. Although such a strategy could well be part of a One Health approach, it is hard to understand how this contributes to the health of concerning animals. Consequently, these practices often lead to public debate. This raises questions on how we should understand the One Health concept in zoonotic disease control. Is it really about equally improving the health of humans, animals and the environment and is this even possible? Or is it ultimately just public health that counts? In cases of conflict between different values, the lack of a universal definition of the One Health concept contributes to this complexity. Although boundary objects have many positive aspects, in the context of One Health and zoonotic disease control, this conception seems to conceal underlying normative differences. To address moral dilemmas related to a One Health approach in zoonotic disease control, it is important to reflect on moral status and the meaning of health for humans, animals and the environment.  相似文献

Artificial selection and high genetic gains in livestock breeds led to a loss of genetic diversity. Current genetic diversity conservation actions focus on long‐term maintenance of breeds under selection. Gene banks play a role in such actions by storing genetic materials for future use and the recent development of genomic information is facilitating characterization of gene bank material for better use. Using the Meuse‐Rhine‐Issel Dutch cattle breed as a case study, we inferred the potential role of germplasm of old individuals for genetic diversity conservation of the current population. First, we described the evolution of genetic merit and diversity over time and then we applied the optimal contribution (OC) strategy to select individuals for maximizing genetic diversity, or maximizing genetic merit while constraining loss of genetic diversity. In the past decades, genetic merit increased while genetic diversity decreased. Genetic merit and diversity were both higher in an OC scenario restricting the rate of inbreeding when old individuals were considered for selection, compared to considering only animals from the current population. Thus, our study shows that gene bank material, in the form of old individuals, has the potential to support long‐term maintenance and selection of breeds.  相似文献

China is in a dominant position in apple production globally with both the largest apple growing area and the largest export of fresh apple fruits.However,the annual productivity of China’s apple is significantly lower than that of other dominant apple producing countries.In addition,apple production is based on excessive application of chemical fertilizers and the nutrient use efficiency(especially nitrogen)is therefore low and the nutrient emissions to the environment are high.Apple production in China is considerably contributes to farmers’incomes and is important as export product.There is an urgent need to enhance apple productivity and improve nutrient use efficiencies in intensive apple production systems in the country.These can be attained by improved understanding of production potential,yield gaps,nutrient use and best management in apple orchards.To the end,priorities in research on apple production systems and required political support are described which may lead to more sustainable and environmental-friendly intensification of apple production in China.  相似文献

A percutaneous/transdiaphragmatic core needle biopsy technique was developed in cats to obtain serial biopsies from different locations of the left ventricle, through which morphological and molecular changes within the same individual can be studied to unravel the mechanisms of feline cardiomyopathies. Transmural left ventricular myocardial samples were obtained from 29 anesthetized, healthy, adult cats with ultrasound guidance. An 18G automatic biopsy needle was inserted between the last left rib and the sternum through the diaphragm into the thorax. Biopsies were obtained from the left ventricular wall. In five cats, three single biopsies were taken with 4-week intervals. Autopsy was performed on six cats, of which three cats had serial biopsies. In total, 87 biopsies were obtained without long-term effects on cardiac function or structure. The biopsies caused transient single ventricular premature complexes and mild pericardial effusion without tamponade. Necropsy revealed a minimal amount of fibrous connective tissue in the diaphragm and the heart without any significant microscopic lesions in the adjacent muscle tissue. The high quality biopsy material was suitable for morphological and molecular studies. This minimally invasive, ultrasound-guided cardiac biopsy technique thus allows for the safe collection of serial biopsies to study feline cardiomyopathies in an experimental setting.  相似文献
