Landscapes in the humid tropics are undergoing a continuous change in land use. Deforestation is still taking its toll on forested areas, but at the same time more and more secondary forests emerge where formerly agricultural lands and pastures are being abandoned. Regarding soil hydrology, the extent to which secondary succession can recover soil hydrological properties disturbed by antecedent deforestation and pasture use is yet poorly understood. We investigated the effect of secondary succession on saturated hydraulic conductivity (Ks) at two soil depths (0-6 and 6-12 cm) using a space-for-time approach in a landscape mosaic in central Panama. The following four land-use classes were studied: pasture (P), secondary forest of 5-8 years of age (SF5), secondary forest of 12-15 years of age (SF12) and secondary forest of more than 100 years of age (SF100), each replicated altogether four times in different micro-catchments across the study region. The hydrological implications of differences in Ks in response to land-use change with land use, especially regarding overland flow generation, were assessed via comparisons with rainfall intensities.Recovery of Ks could be detected in the 0-6 cm depth after 12 years of secondary succession: P and SF5 held similar Ks values, but differed significantly (α = 0.05) from SF12 and SF100 which in turn were indistinguishable. Variability within the land cover classes was large but, due to sufficient replication in the study, Ks recovery could be detected nonetheless. Ks in the 6-12 cm depth did not show any differences between the land cover classes; only Ks of the uppermost soil layer was affected by land-use changes. Overland flow - as inferred from comparisons of Ks with rainfall intensities - is more likely on P and SF5 sites compared to SF12 and SF100 for the upper sample depth; however, generally low values at the 6-12 cm depth are likely to impede vertical percolation during high rainfall intensities regardless of land use.We conclude that Ks can recover from pasture use under secondary succession up to pre-pasture levels, but the process may take more than 8 years. In order to gain comprehensive understanding of Ks change with land use and its hydrological implications, more studies with detailed land-use histories and combined measurements of Ks, overland flow, precipitation and throughfall are essential. 相似文献

The Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) unit of the U.S. Forest Service has collected, compiled, and made available plot data from three measurement periods (identified as 1977, 1990, and 2003, respectively) within Minnesota. Yet little if any research has compared the relative utility of these datasets for developing empirical yield models. This paper compares these and other subdatasets in the context of fitting a basal area (B) yield model to plot data from the aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) forest type. In addition, several models and fitting methods are compared for their applicability and stability over time. Results suggest that the three parent datasets, along with their subdatasets, provide very similar three parameter B yield model prediction capability, but as model complexity increases, variability in coefficient estimates increases between datasets. The absence of data for older aspen stands and the inherent noise within B data prevented the exact determination of an overall best model. However, the model B = b1Sb2(1 − exp( − b3A)) with site index (S) and stand age (A) as predictors was found consistently among the highest in precision and stability. Additionally, nonlinear least squares and nonlinear mixed-effects fitting procedures produced similar model fits, but the latter is preferred for its potential to improve model projections. The results indicate little practical difference between datasets from different time periods and different sizes when used for fitting the models. Additionally, these results will likely extend to other states or regions with similar remeasurement data on aspen and other forest types, thus facilitating the development of other ecological models focused on forest management. 相似文献

Competition is a well-documented contributor to tree mortality in temperate forests, with numerous studies documenting a relationship between tree death and the competitive environment. Models frequently rely on competition as the only non-random mechanism affecting tree mortality. However, for mature forests, competition may cease to be the primary driver of mortality.We use a large, long-term dataset to study the importance of competition in determining tree mortality in old-growth forests on the western slope of the Sierra Nevada of California, U.S.A. We make use of the comparative spatial configuration of dead and live trees, changes in tree spatial pattern through time, and field assessments of contributors to an individual tree's death to quantify competitive effects.Competition was apparently a significant contributor to tree mortality in these forests. Trees that died tended to be in more competitive environments than trees that survived, and suppression frequently appeared as a factor contributing to mortality. On the other hand, based on spatial pattern analyses, only three of 14 plots demonstrated compelling evidence that competition was dominating mortality. Most of the rest of the plots fell within the expectation for random mortality, and three fit neither the random nor the competition model. These results suggest that while competition is often playing a significant role in tree mortality processes in these forests it only infrequently governs those processes. In addition, the field assessments indicated a substantial presence of biotic mortality agents in trees that died.While competition is almost certainly important, demographics in these forests cannot accurately be characterized without a better grasp of other mortality processes. In particular, we likely need a better understanding of biotic agents and their interactions with one another and with competition. 相似文献

Six strains of Fusarium verticillioides, two of F. oxysporum, one strain of F. proliferatum, and a strain of an unidentified species were cultured on maize patties and rice and evaluated for their ability to simultaneously produce fumonisin B (FB) and C (FC) series analogues. Fumonisins were quantified by LC-MS-MS using positive ion electrospray ionization. FC1 provided characteristic fragment ions at m/z 690, 672, 654, 532, 514, and 338 corresponding to sequential loss of H2O and tricarboxylic acid moieties from the alkyl backbone, while FC3 and FC4 provided equivalent product ions 16 and 32 amu lower than the corresponding FC1 fragments, respectively. All isolates cultured on maize produced FC4. All isolates except for that of F. proliferatum also produced FC1, and three of the six strains of F. verticillioides produced FC3. All isolates except those of F. oxysporum produced detectable amounts of FB1, FB2, and FB3. Isolates that produced fumonisin B analogues produced at least 10 fold more of the B series analogues than they did of the C series analogues. The results confirm that at least some strains of F. oxysporum produce FC, but not FB, fumonisin analogues and also suggest that the genetics and physiological regulation of fumonisin production may be more complicated than previously envisaged since some strains of F. verticillioides and F. proliferatum as well as the strain of the unidentified species can simultaneously produce both FB and FC analogues. 相似文献

Seasonal nitrate content in, and nitrate leaching from, agricultural soils of Baden-Wuerttemberg The behavior of soil nitrate was investigated at five field locations in the State of Baden-Wuerttemberg between 1984 and 1987. It was found that the amount of nitrate in the upper 90 cm of soil was not a constant, but fluctuated throughout the year with maxima in the spring and in the fall. Additionally, it was found that the amount of nitrate leaching during winter (from November through April) was correlated to, but not identical with the mineral nitrogen content of the previous fall. It further appeared that nitrate leaching in light sandy soils is mainly a mixing process, whereas in heavy soils it seems to be more a miscible displacement phenomenon. 相似文献

Wheat plants were grown on two soils of different texture, a sandy soil and a silty clay loam, in an atmosphere containing 14CO2. The 14C and total C content of the shoots, roots, soil rhizosphere CO2 and soil microbial biomass were measured 21, 28, 35 and 42 days after germination. There was a pronounced effect of soil texture on the turnover of root-derived C through the microbial biomass. Turnover was relatively fast and at a constant rate in the sandy soil but slowed down in the clay soil, following an initial high assimilation of root products into the microbial biomass.Four percent of the total fixed 14C was retained in the clay loam after 6 weeks compared with a corresponding value of 1.2% for the sandy soil. The proportion of fixed 14C recovered as rhizosphere CO2 at each of the sampling times was relatively constant for the sandy soil (ca 19%) but decreased from 17% at day 28 to 11% at day 42 in the clay soil. The proportion of total fixed 14C in the soil biomass as measured by a fumigation technique increased to a maximum value of 20% after 6 weeks in the sandy soil but decreased in the clay soil from 86% at day 21 to 26% after 42 days plant growth. 相似文献

Thirty-six Fusarium strains were grown on cracked yellow corn and evaluated for optimum fusaproliferin production, with Fusarium subglutinans E-1583 producing the highest levels (1600 microg/g). Three solvent systems were tested for extracting fusaproliferin from the cultures of F. subglutinans E-1583. Methanol gave the highest fusaproliferin recovery, followed by methanol/1% aqueous NaCl (55:45, v/v) and acetonitrile/methanol/H(2)O (16:3:1, v/v/v). Hexane partitioning was effective in removing many impurities from the crude fusaproliferin extracts prior to the liquid chromatography step. Fusaproliferin samples were further purified by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with a C18 preparatory column using a mobile phase of acetonitrile/H(2)O (80:20, v/v). The purity of the fusaproliferin was verified by analytical HPLC, GC/MS, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and electrospray ionization (ESI) MS. The isolated fusaproliferin was shown to be free of impurities and can be used as a standard for routine analysis. Fusaproliferin was shown to be temperature-sensitive when samples were stored at room temperature (20-24 degrees C) for more than several days. After 30 days at 4 degrees C, approximately 8% of the fusaproliferin had been transformed to deacetyl-fusaproliferin; however, samples stored at -20 degrees C for 1 year contained only trace amounts of the deacetylated form. 相似文献

Organic matter and abiotic conditions seem to influence distribution patterns of Enchytraeidae. In this study effects of
changes in management practices on population dynamics of enchytraeids were determined. At two sites (in Athens and Griffin,
GA) parts of a fescue (FE) field were converted into conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) plots and changes in densities
and depth distribution of enchytraeids were followed for 3 years. A site at Watkinsville, containing various soil textures
and characterised by very low organic carbon content, which was converted into no-tillage 4 years earlier, was also sampled.
Significant reductions in enchytraeid densities, after conversion of fescue into CT, were only found at Griffin. The management
practices affected the vertical distribution of enchytraeids. In fescue and NT more enchytraeids were found in the 0–5cm than
in the 5–15cm layer. In conventional tillage fields enchytraeids were more evenly distributed over the profile or more abundant
in the 5–15cm layer. Management also affected the timing of population dynamics in the different plots. At two sample dates
high abundances were found in CT plots only, not in any of the other plots. Enchytraeids were larger at Athens than at Griffin
and Watkinsville and contained more soil particles in their gut. At Athens enchytraeids will presumably contribute more to
the development of soil structure than at the other sites. We conclude that management affects vertical enchytraeid distributions
in soil and changes the timing of population dynamics.

Copper sulfate (CuSO4) addition to freshwater for phytoplankton control has been practiced for decades, and remains the most effective algicidal treatment for numerous managed water bodies. A reservoir in the centre of France was the site for an investigation of copper distribution in aquatic systems after a copper sulfate treatment. Results of monitoring showed a rapid conversion of dissolved Cu to particulate forms, with significant accumulation in the sediments. Total sediment Cu content increased from approximately 37.7 to 45.4 μg g-1 dry weight after the first treatment. Sequential extraction suggested that a significant portion of the sediment-borne Cu was associated with the organic fraction which may release Cu to the water column, although significant release would occur only under extreme changes in water chemistry. Based upon measured Cu concentrations, flows at the down-stream water, and known mass applied during treatment, mass balance calculations indicated that approximately 17% of the Cu was exported from the reservoir over a 70 day period following a 196 μg L-1 Cu2+ (as CuSO4·5H2O) treatment.Copper bioaccumulation by a moss, Fontinalis antipyretica in the down-stream water showed that it was possible to distinguish between a treated and an untreated area. The impact of copper treatmentin the down-stream reservoir could be followed using mosses. There is a distance effect which could be exploited to determine potential copper impact for example.
