Monotypic stands of crested wheatgrass (Agropyron cristatum [L] Gaertm. and Agropyron desertorum [Fisch.] Schult.), an introduced grass, occupy vast expanses of the sagebrush steppe. Efforts to improve habitat for sagebrush-associated wildlife by establishing a diverse community of native vegetation in crested wheatgrass stands have largely failed. Instead of concentrating on a diversity of species, we evaluated the potential to restore the foundation species, Wyoming big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata spp. wyomingensis [Beetle & A. Young] S. L. Welsh), to these communities. We investigated the establishment of Wyoming big sagebrush into six crested wheatgrass stands (sites) by broadcast seeding and planting seedling sagebrush across varying levels of crested wheatgrass control with glyphosate. Planted sagebrush seedlings survived at high rates (~ 70% planted sagebrush survival 3 yr postplanting), even without crested wheatgrass control. However, most attempts to establish sagebrush by broadcast seeding failed. Only at high levels of crested wheatgrass control did a few sagebrush plants establish from broadcasted seed. Sagebrush density and cover were greater with planting seedlings than broadcast seeding. Sagebrush cover, height, and canopy area were greater at higher levels of crested wheatgrass control. High levels of crested wheatgrass control also created an opportunity for exotic annuals to increase. Crested wheatgrass rapidly recovered after glyphosate control treatments, which suggests multiple treatments may be needed to effectively control crested wheatgrass. Our results suggest that planting sagebrush seedlings can structurally diversify monotypic crested wheatgrass stands to provide habitat for sagebrush-associated wildlife. Though this is not the full diversity of native functional groups representative of the sagebrush steppe, it is a substantial improvement over other efforts that have largely failed to alter these plant communities. We also hypothesize that planting sagebrush seedlings in patches or strips may provide a relatively inexpensive method to facilitate sagebrush recovery across vast landscapes where sagebrush has been lost. 相似文献

Recent climatic trends and climate model projections indicate that climate change will modify rangeland ecosystem functions and the services and livelihoods that they provision. Recent history has demonstrated that climatic variability has a strong influence on both ecological and social components of rangeland systems and that these systems possess substantial capacity to adapt to climatic variability. Specific objectives of this synthesis are to: 1) evaluate options to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions and future climate change; 2) survey actions that individuals, enterprises, and social organizations can use to adapt to climate change; and 3) assess options for system transformation when adaptation is no longer sufficient to contend with climate change. Mitigation for carbon sequestration does not appear economically viable, given the small and highly variable carbon dioxide fluxes of rangeland ecosystems and the high transaction costs that would be incurred. In contrast, adaptation strategies are numerous and provide a means to manage risks associated with climate change. Adaptation strategies are diverse, including altered risk perception by individuals, greater flexibility of production enterprises, and modifications to social organizations that emphasize climatic variability, rather than consistency. Many adaptations represent “no regrets” actions because their implementation can be justified without emphasis on pending climate change. Adaptations specific to livestock production systems can include flexible herd management, alternative livestock breeds or species, innovative pest management, modified enterprise structures, and geographic relocation. Social-ecological systems in which adaptation is insufficient to counter the adverse consequences of climate change might undergo transformative change to produce alternative ecosystem services, production enterprises, and livelihoods. The rangeland profession is in a pivotal position to provide leadership on this global challenge because it represents the intersection of management and scientific knowledge, includes diverse stakeholders who derive their livelihoods from rangelands, and interacts with organizations responsible for rangeland stewardship. 相似文献

Background: Consuming moderate amounts of lean red meat as part of a balanced diet valuably contributes to intakes of essential nutrients, in this study, we merged phenotypic and genotypic information to characterize the variation in lipid profile and sensory parameters and to represent the diversity among 15 cattle populations. Correlations between fat content, organoleptic characteristics and lipid profiles were also investigated. Methods: A sample of 436 largely unrelated purebred bulls belonging to 15 breeds and reared under comparable management conditions was analyzed. Phenotypic data -including fatness score, fat percentage, individual fatty acids (FA) profiles and sensory panel tests- and genotypic information from 11 polymorphisms was used. Results: The correlation coefficients between muscle total lipid measurements and absolute vs. relative amounts of polyunsaturated FA (PUFA) were in opposite directions. Increasing carcass fat leads to an increasing amount of FAs in triglycerides, but at the same time the relative amount of PUFAs is decreasing, which is in concordance with the negative correlation obtained here between the percentage of PUFA and fat measurements, as well as the weaker correlation between total phospholipids and total lipid muscle content compared with neutral lipids. Concerning organoleptic characteristics, a negative correlation between fiavour scores and the percentage of total PUFA, particularly to n-6 fraction, was found. The correlation between juiciness and texture is higher than with flavour scores. The distribution of SNPs plotted by principal components analysis (PCA) mainly reflects their known trait associations, although influenced by their specific breed allele frequencies. Intestinal absorption (enterohepatic circulation) and biliary secretion of 14C from a metabolite of carbaryl isolated from rat bile, 5,6-dihydro-5,6-dihydroxy[14C]carbaryl glucuronide, and its aglycone were observed: Lincomycin and kanamycin sulfate were also given to rats to determine the effect of an altered intestinal microflora on the above processes. Net absorption of 14C from the glucuronide occurred in the small intestine and cecum of control rats (68.5%); 10% of the infused 14C was secreted in the bile. Antibiotic treatment affected the site of absorption and the biliary secretion of 14C from the glucuronide since net 14C absorption occurred only in the small intestine of antibiotic-treated rats (32.5%) and biliary secretion accounted for less than 1% of the infused 14C. The site of absorption of 14C from the aglycone and biliary secretion of 14C (17%, control rats; 14%, antibiotic-treated rats) were not affected by antibiotic treatment. Carbon-14 from the aglycone was absorbed primarily in the small intestine (89.3%, control rats; 84.2%, antibiotic-treated rats). Improvements in seed germination, the early establishment of leaf cover, storage root development and the control of bolting would all increase the yield of sugar beet in the UK. Plant growth at these stages of development is controlled by genotype and by climatic factors acting through endogenous growth substances and is potentially capable of modification by applied growth regulators. For example, sugar beet responds to changes in daylength and spectral quality of light at the end of the day by increasing lamina and petiole growth, light interception and plant growth rate. Changes in endogenous gibberellins in young leaves of plants growing in different photoperiods and the responses of these leaves to applied gibberellic acid are presented as evidence for the involvement of gibberellins in leaf expansion in sugar beet. 相似文献

The sizes and velocities of drops in sprays from farm sprayers are considered in relation to their impaction on plant surfaces. Examples from a study being carried out at the National Institute of Agricultural Engineering (NIAE) are given. The results showed that young leaves of barley (cv Mazurka) and wild oats (Avena fatua L.) were difficult to wet, only the smallest drops applied (about 100 um diameter) being readily retained. In the context of weed control in cereals the importance of detrmining the effect of the form of plant deposits on herbicidal activity is discussed, and examples of results of a joint study between the NIAE and the Agricultural Research Council Weed Research Organization are given. 相似文献

Resistance to pyrethroids in insects is rare, but its recent rapid development in the field suggests that this resistance may be facilitated by previous exposure to or by resistance to insecticides of unrelated groups. To test this houseflies of strain 49r2b, originally resistant to dimethoate in the field, were selected eight times during ten generations with either pyrethrum extract or bioresmethrin with or without piperonyl butoxide or with dimethoate. Selecting with any of the pyrethroids led to resistance to these insecticides and in particular to pyrethrum/piperonyl butoxide. Selecting with pyrethrum/piperonyl butoxide resulted in strongest resistance to the pyrethroids tested, whereas selecting with bioresmethrin/piperonyl butoxide resulted in least resistance. These results show that dimethoate-resistant flies selected with pyrethroids can readily develop resistance to these insecticides, but development of resistance can be minimised by using bioresmethrin/piperonyl butoxide. The effects on DNA synthesis of the fungicide captan and several structurally related compounds were investigated in isolated bovine liver nuclei. Captan, folpet, captafol, and trichloromethanesulfenyl chloride inhibited DNA synthesis to the same degree with ID50 values of approximately 50 μM in a 40-min assay. The inhibition is concentration dependent and the degree of inhibition increases with time. Studies with structural analogs of captan indicated that inhibition of DNA synthesis by captan is mediated through the trichloromethylthio moiety of the captan molecule. In addition, the data indicate thiophosgene is probably not the toxic species involved in the inhibition of DNA synthesis. The isolated nuclei used in this study were shown to exhibit only a single DNA polymerase activity which was determined to be of the β or low-molecular-weight type. In addition to its inhibition in intact nuclei, captan inhibited the activity of the β polymerase in nuclear extracts as well as in partially purified enzyme preparations. These results indicate that captan inhibits DNA synthesis in our preparation of isolated nuclei by acting directly on the DNA polymerase-catalyzed reaction rather than by causing a nonspecific or indirect effect in the nuclear system such as alterations in the nuclear membrane or aggregation of the nuclei. The site of captan's inhibitory action is the DNA polymerase molecule. The interaction of captan with the polymerase results in irreversible inhibition of the enzyme. Interaction of captan with the template, if it occurs, does not appear to be involved in mediating the inhibition. 相似文献
