Lateral thoracic nerve reflex latencies values were measured in ponies using a simple, non-invasive technique. The reflex was elicited using an external triggering hammer attached to an electrodiagnostic unit. The resulting evoked, compound muscle action potentials were recorded with electrodes, which were placed over the 6th ribs or 11th rib level with the axilla. Two superimposed repeats of 4 signal-averaged sweeps of 50 or 100 milliseconds were recorded and the estimated reflex pathway was measured for each subject in order to calculate the reflex latencies and latency velocities. Mean left and right 6th rib peak latencies were not significantly different from each other ( P = .609), but left 6th rib latencies were shorter than those recorded from the 11th rib ( P < .0001), substantiating the existence of an indirect (central) pathway to the reflex. The calculated left and right 6th rib latency velocities were not significantly different from each other ( P = .58) but left 6th rib latency velocities were different from left 11th rib ( P = .009). The calculated latency velocities were within the broad range for corticospinal tract motor conduction velocities and comparable to magnetic motor evoked latency velocities. The use of lateral thoracic reflex latency measurements to objectively identify the site of spinal cord lesions is discussed. 相似文献

Small-scale farm forestry has the potential to offer many benefits both to landholders and the wider community. As with all
changes in land-use practices, there are associated benefits and costs and these are not uniformly distributed. They have
varying impacts on the different values, aspirations, goals and objectives that exist within the community. Furthermore, the
community does not consider these values, aspirations, goals and objectives of equal importance. The degree of concern can
vary from minor to high and overriding all other considerations. When evaluating farm forestry options it is necessary to
address all of these concerns. This paper examines the combined use compensatory and non-compensatory multi-criteria analyses
to evaluate forestry options, in a case study for the Darling Downs region of Queensland, Australia. These aggregation techniques
are found to be highly complementary and together provide a comprehensive analysis. The compensatory technique provides a
sound measure of overall performance of a forestry system, whereas the non-compensatory technique alerts decision-makers to
presence of particularly poor performance with respect to individual criteria. The compensatory technique used is simple and
understandable even for those with non-mathematical backgrounds. This analysis can identify and aid communication of the relative

It is possible that current tree domestication practices undertaken by farmers reduce the genetic base of tree resources on
farms, raising concerns regarding the productivity, sustainability and conservation value of agroforestry ecosystems. Here,
we assessed possible changes in genetic variation during domestication in the important and heavily utilised timber species,
Vitex fischeri Gürke (syn. Vitex keniensis), by comparing geographically proximate forest and farm material in central Kenya. Employing RAPD analysis, a total of 104
polymorphic markers revealed by five arbitrary primers were scored in a total of 65 individuals, 32 from forest and 33 from
farmland. Despite concerns of possible genetic erosion, forest and farm stands did not differ significantly in levels of genetic
variation, with H values of 0.278 and 0.269, respectively. However, Mantel tests did reveal greater geographically related associative genetic
structure among individuals in farm rather than forest material, with r
M values of 0.217 and 0.114, respectively. A more detailed analysis of structure suggested this could be due to local variation
in origin of some on-farm trees. Implications of data for the genetic management of V. fischeri stands during farmer-led tree domestication activities are discussed. At present, there appears little reason to reject on-farm
V. fischeri as a source of germplasm for future on-farm planting or for conservation purposes, although this situation may change and

Suitable methods for measuring and monitoring the condition of riparian environments are being investigated by government agencies responsible for maintaining these environments in Australia. The objective of this work was to compare two riparian condition assessment approaches, the Tropical Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Condition (TRARC) method developed for rapid on-ground assessment of the environmental condition of savanna riparian zones and an image based riparian condition monitoring scheme. Measurements derived from these two approaches were compared and correlated. The sample representativeness of the TRARC method was evaluated and the cost-effectiveness and suitability for multi-temporal analysis of the two approaches were assessed. Two high spatial resolution multi-spectral QuickBird satellite images captured in 2004 and 2005 and coincident field data covering sections of the Daly River in the Northern Territory, Australia were used in this work. Both field and image data were processed to map indicators of riparian zone condition including percentage canopy cover, organic litter on the ground, canopy continuity, tree clearing, bank stability, and flood damage. Spectral vegetation indices, image segmentation, and supervised classification were used to produce riparian health indicator maps. QuickBird image data were used to examine if the spatial distribution of TRARC transects provided a representative sample of ground based estimates of riparian health indicators. Covering approximately 3% of the study area, the sample mean of the TRARC estimates of individual indicators of riparian zone condition were in most cases within 20% of the global mean derived from the whole imaged riparian area. The cost-effectiveness of the image based approach was compared to that of the ground based TRARC method. Results showed that the TRARC method was more cost-effective at spatial scales from 1 km to 200 km of river in relatively homogeneous riparian zones along rivers with only one channel, while image based assessment becomes more feasible at regional scales (200–2000 km of river). A change detection analysis demonstrated that image data can provide detailed information on gradual change, while the TRARC method is less suited for multi-temporal analysis due to the ranked data format, which inhibits precise detection of change. However, results from both methods were considered to complement each other for single date assessment of riparian zones if used at appropriate spatial scales. 相似文献

Summary Below-crown radial and height variations in maximum crushing strength parallel to grain, relative density and tracheid length of an immature, 55 year old, red pine were studied. All properties showed pronounced trends with radial age and increased from pith to bark. A radial age of 16 years was estimated as the age from which mature stem wood is formed. All properties studied varied with height above ground. Strong correlations were observed among properties. Despite an undeserved reputation for being dull and homogenous systems, mangal and saltmarsh in Australia have highly complex patterns and processes. Their role as key edge systems between land and sea has implications for many species which have larval stages in mangal and saltmarsh, but spend adult life as benthic, pelagic or demersal species. Many such species are also important commercially. Mangal and saltmarsh are both highly dynamic systems, reacting rapidly to changes in hydrological condition and sedimentation. In many areas of the world mangal and saltmarsh are threatened systems, especially near human habitation. Appropriate management strategies for mangal and saltmarsh are therefore critical for both conservation and sustainable use, the two key objectives of the Convention on Biological Diversity. Clearing and associated development, invasion of alien species, pollution effects and poor management are the key threats to these systems. Management at a bioregional level, including the development of a comprehensive system of protected areas, is identified as the key management strategy which will ensure an adequate future for these dynamic systems. 相似文献
