The California Milk Cell Test (CMCT) and somatic cell counts (SCC) on their own were not reliable methods in the identification of subclinical mastitis in the dairy goats studied and should be accompanied by microbiological tests. However, CMCT and SCC were indicators of irritation of the udder parenchyma. In healthy goats Spectrazol Milking Cow (Schering-Plough AH) caused the least and Curaclox LC (Norbrook (ARK AH)) the most irritation of parenchyma after intramammary treatment. The effects of Rilexine 200 LC (Logos Agvet (Virbac)) were intermediate. There was a highly significant difference (P < 0.001) in the mean log SCC between treated and control groups for goats treated with Curaclox LC and Rilexine 200 LC but no significant difference was present in the mean log SCC of treatment and control groups for goats treated with Spectrazol Milking Cow at the 07:00 and at 19:00 samplings. The CMCT was an indicator of the level of SCC in goat milk. The CMCT was more useful in confirming the absence of infection, rather than in diagnosing mastitis.  相似文献

Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) are responsible for the transmission of a large number of pathogens to livestock and wild animals. In this study the presence of the genus, using light traps based at four different sites within the National Zoological Gardens of South Africa, was investigated during 2002-2004. In total, 37 species were recorded, including large numbers of Culicoides imicola Kieffer, 1913, which is responsible for the transmission of economically important arboviruses in South Africa, Europe, Middle and Far East. These results are discussed with reference to the wider Culicoides fauna in the Onderstepoort area of South Africa, their vector competence as well as biosecurity at the National Zoological Gardens.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to make an inventory of the ixodid tick species infesting wild animals in three western, semi-arid nature reserves in South Africa. To this end 22 animals in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, 10 in the West Coast National Park and 16 in the Karoo National Park were examined. Fourteen tick species were recovered, of which Hyalomma truncatum, Rhipicephalus exophthalmos and Rhipicephalus glabroscutatum were each present in two reserves and the remainder only in one. The distributions of two of the 14 tick species recovered, namely Rhipicephalus capensis and Rhipicephalus neumanni, are virtually confined to the western semi-arid regions of southern Africa. Hyalomma truncatum, R. capensis and R. glabroscutatum were the most numerous of the ticks recovered, and eland, Taurotragus oryx, were the most heavily infested with the former two species and gemsbok, Oryx gazella, and mountain reedbuck, Redunca fulvorufula, with R. glabroscutatum.  相似文献

The effects of water deficits on photosynthesis, plant growth and dry matter accumulation and distribution in the kiwifruit, cv Hayward, grown under controlled conditions in the glasshouse were studied. Water stress was imposed by irrigating the plants with 100%, 85%, 65% and 40% of water needed to reach pot capacity in the soil. Water deficits reduced the rate of photosynthesis by up to 53–64% in relation to the control. This decline was attributed to stomatal closure, since stomatal conductance was reduced significantly, or/and to inhibition of photosynthesis at chloroplast level. Severe water stress reduced plant height by 78–84%, total dry weight by 58–66% and total leaf area by 72–77%. The root to shoot ratio was 3.5 times higher in water-stressed plants, showing that water stress in kiwifruit alters the pattern of dry matter distribution favouring the roots. The decrease in growth induced by water deficits was a consequence of a reduction in both photosynthesis and photosynthates partitioning, which adversely affects leaf area development.  相似文献

Summary Loess and grumusol soils with sodicity levels of 2.5, 6.5 and 17–21 percent were spread over with 3, 5 and 10 t/ha of powdered phosphogypsum (PG) and were rained with distilled water (DW). Phosphogypsum at the rate of 5 t/ha increased the final infiltration rate (FIR) of the loess with ESP of 2.5, 6.5 and 21.0, from 3.0, 1.1 and 0.9 mm/h, respectively in the control to 13.4, 8.5 and 8.3 mm/h, respectively.The final infiltration rate of the same soils with the same ESP levels, rained on with saturated gypsum solutions was lower than that obtained by the PG powder treatment. Summary The effect of soil texture and CaCO3 content on water infiltration rate in crusted soil was studied with the use of a rain simulator. Two types of soils with low exchangeable sodium percentage (ESP < 3.0%) were studied: (i) calcareous soils (5.1–16.3% CaCO3) with a high silt-to-clay ratio (0.82–1.47) from a region with < 400 mm winter rain; and (ii) non-calcareous soils with a low silt-to-clay ratio (0.13–0.35) from a region with > 400 mm winter rain. Soil samples with clay percentages between 3 and 60 were collected in each region. Distilled water (simulating rainfall) and saline water (simulating irrigation water) were sprinkled on the soil. The soils were exposed to rain until steady state infiltration and corresponding crust formation were obtained. For both types of soils and for both types of applied water, soils with 20% clay were found to be the most sensitive to crust formation and have the lowest infiltration rate. With increasing percentage of clay, the soil structure was more stable and the formation of crust was diminished. In soils with lower clay content (< 20%), there was a limited amount of clay to disperse and, as a result, undeveloped crust was formed. Silt and CaCO3 had no effect on the final infiltration rate for either type of applied water, whereas with saline water, increasing the silt content increased the rate of crust formation.Contribution from the Agricultural Research Organization, The Volcani Center, Bet Dagan, Israel. A simple modification of the volume balance equation of the IPARM model is presented to facilitate the use of variable inflow. Traditional approaches for estimating infiltration from advance and/or runoff have merely considered the constant or step inflow case. Whenever this assumption is violated, significant uncertainty is introduced into the estimated infiltration parameters. Evaluation of the procedure with a number of data sets has demonstrated significant improvements in the estimates of infiltration parameters. Furthermore, the technique has shown that a portion of the apparent variability in estimated soil intake rates between furrows in the same field is a consequence of the constant inflow assumption. Accounting for the variable inflow to estimate infiltration functions, both standardised the shape of the infiltration curve and reduced the magnitude of the variation between curves. The proposed technique remains restricted by limitations similar to that of other volume balance models but offers greater performance under typical inflow variations often experienced in practice.  相似文献

The applicability of commercially available remote sensing instrumentation was evaluated for site-specific management of abiotic and biotic stress on cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) grown under a center pivot low energy precision application (LEPA) irrigation system. This study was conducted in a field where three irrigation regimes (100%, 75%, and 50% ETc) were imposed on areas of Phymatotrichum (root rot) with the specific objectives to (1) examine commercial remote sensing instrumentation for locating areas showing biotic and abiotic stress symptomology in a cotton field, (2) compare data obtained from commercial aerial infrared photography to that collected by infrared transducers (IRTs) mounted on a center pivot, (3) evaluate canopy temperature changes between irrigation regimes and their relationship to lint yield with IRTs and/or IR photography, and (4) explore the use of deficit irrigation and the use of crop coefficients for irrigation scheduling. Pivot-mounted IRTs and an IR camera were able to differentiate water stress among irrigation regimes. The IR camera distinguished between biotic (root rot) and abiotic (drought) stress with the assistance of groundtruthing. The 50% ETc regime had significantly higher canopy temperatures than the other two regimes, which was reflected in significantly lower lint yields when compared to the 75% and 100% ETc regimes. Deficit irrigation down to 75% ETc had no impact on lint yield, indicating that water savings were possible without reducing yield.  相似文献

This paper presents a scenario-based analysis of the impacts of Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform for upland agriculture using a Welsh case-study. Specifically the paper examines the impacts of the introduction of the single-farm payment (SFP), the modulation of direct payments under Pillar I of the CAP and the increase in agri-environment payments under Pillar II. Three enterprises are examined, upland sheep rearing with lamb finishing, spring- and autumn-calving suckler-cattle with calf rearing. These enterprises are modelled under conditions in 2002/3, 2004/5 and for the reformed CAP in 2005/6. To support this analysis a livestock system model (LSM) was implemented. The model assesses alternative management regimen using a flexible state-transition approach. This simplifies the realisation and parameterisation of potentially complex management regimen. The model tracks fodder requirements to achieve targets based on defined diets. The LSM underpins whole-farm analyses of stocking-rates, labour and other resource requirements and net-farm income. From the case study the paper concludes that the impacts of the introduction of the CAP reform on the financial performance of the systems are small but negative (a net reduction of around 5% in support). The larger reduction in direct payments (15–18%) is partially offset by agri-environment measures. The paper concludes that while SFP encourages a more market-oriented outlook, the adaptive capacity within systems as they stand is very limited. There are a range of possible adaptation strategies, but for the uplands the extensification of cattle systems by reducing stock numbers and cutting back on labour seems most probable.  相似文献
