N-alkanes were measured both in dissolved and particulate-adsorbed phases of water samples collected from five stations located along Shatt al-Arab River in Iraq. The aim of this study was to provide a background information on the presence, origin, and distribution of n-alkanes in the waters of Shatt al-Arab River. Total concentrations of n-alkanes were lower in the dissolved phase (29.37 (μg L?1) than in the particulate-adsorbed fraction (17.62 μg g?1 dw). Distribution of n-alkanes in both fractions is characterized by two distinct patterns. First, for C compounds numbered C14 to C22, the ‘odd’ numbered hydrocarbons were slightly more abundant with C17 being the most concentrated. The second is shown within n-alkanes greater than C22. In these the ‘odd’ numbered hydrocarbons show even greater predominance indicating that much of the n-alkanes in the waters of Shatt al-Arab, may have originated from aquatic biogenic sources; i.e., diatoms, algal forms, bacterial activities, and higher plants. The CPI values were found to be from 0.99 to 1.98 in the dissolved fraction and from 0.70 to 2.10 in the particulate fraction. Petroleum hydrocarbon inputs and urban related oil discharges (anthropogenic pollution) may also have contributed to the input of n-alkanes in Shatt al-Arab, particularly near the city of Basrah (St. IV). Total concentrations at station IV were much higher (8.40 μg L?1 and 5.80 μg g?1) than that for the most upstream station, # I, (3.20 μg L?1 and 1.48 μg g?1) and decreased again further downstream at station V (7.10 μg L?1 and 4.32 μg g?1). The CPI values were around 1.0 in station IV. In a conclusion, results obtained in this study indicate that the n-alkanes in the waters of Shatt al-Arab River are of aquatic biogenic and anthropogenic (petroleum related) origins. 相似文献

Diaeretiella rapae (M’Intosh.) is an endoparasite of the turnip aphid,Lipaphis erysimi (Kalt.) with a wide geographical distribution. The four Pesticides Nogos 50 EC at 600 ml per acre, Dimecron 50 WSC, Monofos
40 WSC and Tamaron 600 SL at 500 ml per acre, used in practice for the control of this pest, were tested for their side-effects
onD. rapae. The parasitoid was reared on pottedBrassica napus plants infested with aphid under laboratory conditions (22±2°C, 60–70% rel. hum., 16 h light and 8 h dark). In one test,
adult female parasitoids were exposed to fresh pesticide residues on glass plates and in another test, the pupae within aphid
mummies were directly sprayed. The results revealed that Dimecron 50 WSC, Nogos 50 EC and Monofos 40 WSC were harmful causing
100% mortalitv toD. rapae followed by Tamaron 600 SL (97% moderately harmful) after 24 hours of application, compared to no mortality in control, where
only water was sprayed. Directly spraying of pupae with Dimecron 50 WSC and Nogos 50 EC reduced adult parasitoid emergence
to 9 and 7%, respectively, Monofos 40 WSC and Tamaron 600 SL to 3% compared to 78% emergence for the control within one week
of treatment. The results showed that none of the tested pesticides was safe toD. rapae and according to the International Organization for Biological Control (IOBC) further testing under semi-field and field

Continual discharge of textile wastewaters loaded with a variety of synthetic dyes and metals is considered as a huge threat to surrounding ecosystems. In order to treat these undesirable pollutants, microbial bioremediation is considered as an efficient and economical technique. This study was conducted to evaluate the use of bacterial strains for simultaneous removal of azo dyes and hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)]. Fifty-eight bacterial strains were isolated from Paharang drain wastewater and tested for their potential to decolorize reactive red-120 (RR-120) in the presence of 25 mg L?1 of Cr(VI). Among the tested isolates, FA10 decolorized the RR-120 most efficiently and was identified as Acinetobacter junii strain FA10. Based on quadratic polynomial equation and response surfaces given by the response surface methodology (RSM), Cr concentration and pH were found to be the main factors governing the RR-120 decolorization by FA10. The strain FA10 also exhibited a substantial salt resistance since it showed a considerable decolorization of RR-120 even in the presence of 150 g L?1 of NaCl. Moreover, the strain FA10 also showed the potential to simultaneously remove the Cr(VI) and the selected azo dyes in the same medium. More than 80 % of the initially added Cr(VI) was removed over 72 h of incubation along with the appreciable decolorization efficiency. The strain FA10 also exhibited good tolerance to considerable levels of different heavy metals. The findings of this study suggest that the strain FA10 might serve as an efficient bioresource to develop the biotechnological approaches for simultaneous removal of different azo dyes and heavy metals including Cr(VI). 相似文献

Legumes have been shown to increase P uptake of the following cereal, but the underlying mechanisms are unclear. The aim of this study was to compare the effect of legume pre-crops and their residues on the growth, P uptake and size of soil P pools in the rhizosphere of the following wheat. Three grain legumes (faba bean, chickpea and white lupin) were grown until maturity in loamy sand soil with low P availability to which 80?mg P kg?1 was supplied. This pre-crop soil was then amended with legume residues or left un-amended and planted with wheat. The growth, P uptake and concentrations of P pools in the rhizosphere of the following wheat were measured 6?weeks after sowing. In a separate experiment, residue decomposition was measured over 42?days by determining soil CO2 release as well as available N and P. Decomposition rates were highest for chickpea residues and lowest for wheat residues. P release was greatest from white lupin residues and N release was greatest from faba bean residues, while wheat residues resulted in net N and P immobilisation. The growth of the following wheat was greater in legume pre-crop soil without residue than in soils with residue addition, while the reverse was true for plant P concentration. Among the legumes, faba bean had the strongest effect on growth, P uptake and concentrations of the rhizosphere P pools of the following wheat. Regardless of the pre-crop and residue treatment, wheat depleted the less labile pools residual P as well as NaOH-Pi and Po, with a stronger depletion of the organic pool. We conclude that although P in the added residues may become available during decomposition, the presence of the residues in the soil had a negative effect on the growth of the following wheat. Bacterial speck of tomato, caused by Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, was observed to cause severe symptoms, especially on protected tomato crops, during the winter season in the coastal area of Lebanon. This study was conducted to investigate the aetiology and pathogenesis of the bacterium involved and the efficacy of different chemicals for the control of the disease. Biochemical, physiological and pathological tests verified the identity of the bacterium involved as P. s. tomato. Periodic histological sectioning of inoculated tomato leaves showed that bacterial cells resided and multiplied in depressions and around trichome bases for 24 h before penetration through stomata and trichome basal cells. The bacteria invaded intercellular spaces and caused cell lignification, collapse and shrinkage, 48 h after inoculation. Necrotic lesions filled with bacterial masses and collapsed lignified cells were readily observable at and after 72 h. No detectable histological changes were observed in the yellow halo region surrounding the necrotic leaf specks. A thermostable toxin was produced by the pathogen and is involved in chlorotic symptom expression. An antibiotic mixture of streptomycin + oxytetracy‐cline was most effective in controlling infections followed by copper oxychloride + mancozeb, tribasic copper sulphate + sulphur, copper oxychloride and copper oxychloride + zineb. 相似文献

Depth distribution of soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions depends on the efficiency of agro‐technical managements. Information on depth distribution of SOC fractions mostly confined to the plow layer and scant in dry lands of Punjab, Pakistan. Therefore, a field experiment was laid out with moldboard plow (MP) (control), tine cultivator (TC), and minimum tillage (MT) as main plots, and cropping sequences fallow wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), (FW, control), mungbean (Vigna radiata L.) wheat (MW), sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.) wheat (SW), green manure wheat (GW), and mungbean‐chickpea (MC) (Cicer arietinum L.) as sub‐plots. Treatment effects were assessed for microbial biomass carbon (MBC), potentially mineralizeable carbon (PMC), particulate organic carbon (POC), dissolved organic carbon (DOC), HCl insoluble carbon (HIC), and stratification ratio (SR) in Rawal series: Udic Haplustalf. Alfisols. The MBC concentration was the highest in MT system, at 15 to 30‐cm depth under MW and PMC concentration was highest under SW with MT at 45–60 cm. MP had higher POC in FW sequence. The highest DOC was at 0 to 15‐cm depth under MC with TC and stock of HIC was more under TC with FW sequence. The highest SR of PMC was under MT with FW at 0–15:15–30 and POC was under TC and MP with FW at depths of 0–15:45–60 cm. The highest SR for DOC was under MP with GW at 0–15:45–60 cm and HCl insoluble C was under MT with SW at 0–15:45–60. In broad‐spectrum, labile organic fractions revealed differential sensitivity, and POC stocks are also a sensitive indicator to detect the short‐management effects. The antioxidant properties of the Pacific chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) muscle protein hydrolysates prepared by enzymatic hydrolysis were investigated. After enzyme hydrolysis at 50°C for 60 min, more than 80% of the S. japonicus muscle protein was hydrolyzed. The highest 2,2-Diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical-scavenging activity (71.69%) occurred in whole muscle protein hydrolysates treated at 50°C for 30 min with Protamex, and the highest 2,2?-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazolin-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS) radical-scavenging activity (95.39%) was observed in white muscle protein hydrolysates treated at 50°C for 30 min with Neutrase. The highest superoxide dismutase (SOD)-like activity (32.84%) was recorded in white muscle protein hydrolysates treated at 50°C for 120 min with Protamex. Changes in the molecular weight distribution of S. japonicus muscle proteins after enzymatic hydrolysis were observed by sodium dodecyl sulfate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE). Whole blood, red blood cells (RBC), and plasma vitamin E (VE) levels in chicks fed dietary VE (dl-alpha-tocopheryl acetate, dl-alpha Ta) supplementation in steps of 0.0, 5.0, 10.0, 15.0, 20.0 and 30.0 mg/Kg were determined to examine their usefulness as an index of VE status. The increase in VE level was significant and linear in whole blood (r = 0.90), RBC (r = 0.89) and plasma (r = 0.93) in response to dietary VE intake. There was a close correlation between VE in plasma vs whole blood (r = 0.90), plasma vs RBC (r = 0.91) and whole blood vs RBC (r = 0.95). The plasma VE content was 1.2-1.8 times greater than that of whole blood, and 6.6-12.5 times greater than that of RBC. The plasma total lipids content was not affected by the dietary VE intake, whereas the level of VE in the plasma total lipids was significantly increased with increasing supplementation. Alpha tocopherol was the major isomer (ca 92%) of VE in whole blood, RBC and plasma at hatching. The small proportions of beta-tocopherol (ca 2%), gamma-tocopherol (ca 5%) and alpha-tocotrienol (ca 1%) observed at 1 day of age had decreased or totally disappeared by 7 days of age after feeding the VE-free basal diet. The data showed that in the chick, the whole blood and RBC levels of VE were as sensitive and reliable indexes of dietary VE status as was that of the plasma. 相似文献

The study was conducted to examine the chemical composition of urea–molasses treated wheat straw (WS) fermented with cattle manure (CM) and its feeding value for growing buffalo male calves. Wheat straw treated with varying levels of urea (0%, 2% and 4%) and molasses (2% and 4%) was ensiled with 30% cattle manure (on dry matter basis) for different fermentation periods (20, 30 and 40 days). Fermented wheat straw (FWS) after each fermentation period was analyzed for pH, dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), true protein (TP), ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and neutral detergent fiber (NDF). Maximum pH, DM, CP, TP and NH3-N and minimum NDF contents were observed with 4% urea. The 4% molasses level increased the CP, TP and NH3-N contents of FWS, but pH, DM and NDF remained unchanged after 40 days of fermentation. The 4% urea × 4% molasses interaction resulted in maximum DM, CP, TP, NH3-N after 40 days of fermentation period and this combination was used for large scale production of FWS to evaluate its feeding value for calves. Four isonitrogen and isocaloric diets were formulated. The control FWS 0 diet contained no FWS while in FWS 15, FWS 25 and FWS 35 diets concentrate was replaced with 15%, 25% and 35% FWS, respectively. The diets were randomly allotted to four groups of 28 calves 9–12 months of age, seven in each group, in a randomized complete block design to examine the nutrient intake, digestibility, nitrogen balance and weight gain. An increased DM, organic matter (OM), CP and NDF intakes were observed in calves fed FWS diets compared to those fed FWS 0 diet. Nitrogen retention increased significantly with increasing the level of FWS. The DM, OM, CP and NDF apparent digestibilities were non-significant in calves fed different levels of FWS. A linear increase in weight gain was noticed in calves fed diets containing increasing level of FWS. 相似文献
