The role of scale in ecology is widely recognized as being of vital importance for understanding ecological patterns and processes. The capercaillie (Tetrao urogallus) is a forest grouse species with large spatial requirements and highly specialized habitat preferences. Habitat models at the forest stand scale can only partly explain capercaillie occurrence, and some studies at the landscape scale have emphasized the role of large-scale effects. We hypothesized that both the ability of single variables and multivariate models to explain capercaillie occurrence would vary with the spatial scale of the analysis. To test this hypothesis, we varied the grain size of our analysis from 1 to just over 1100 hectares and built univariate and multivariate habitat suitability models for capercaillie in the Swiss Alps. The variance explained by the univariate models was found to vary among the predictors and with spatial scale. Within the multivariate models, the best single-scale model (using all predictor variables at the same scale) worked at a scale equivalent to a small annual home range. The multi-scale model, in which each predictor variable was entered at the scale at which it had performed best in the univariate model, did slightly better than the best single-scale model. Our results confirm that habitat variables should be included at different spatial scales when species-habitat relationships are investigated.  相似文献

Changes of EUF‐extractable nitrogen (N) (nitrate, ammonium, organic N) in 20 arable bare soils, subsequently planted with ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) and cutting three times were investigated in pot experiments. All 20 soils responded qualitatively in the same way. During the period of bare soil, there was a significant increase of EUF‐extractable nitrate (EUF NO ), while extractable ammonium (EUF NH ) remained on the same level and organic N (EUF Norg) decreased. This decrease, however, was not significant. From sowing until the first cutting of the grass, EUF‐NO concentration decreased to almost zero. This low EUF‐NO level was maintained throughout the subsequent experimental period (three cuttings of grass). During the growth of the first cutting, EUF Norg decreased while EUF NH remained constant, however, on a low level. EUF NH fell during the growth of the second and third cutting. In this period, however, the N supply of the grass was insufficient. EUF Norg decreased during the growth of the second cutting, but increased during the growth of the third cutting. This shows that the EUF‐Norg fraction represents a transient pool, which gains and loses N. EUF NO , EUF NH , and EUF Norg correlated with the N uptake of the grass. Strongest correlation for EUF NO was found for the first cutting (p < 0.001), and for EUF NH and EUF Norg for the second and third cutting (p < 0.001). Total soil N was not correlated with the N uptake of the grass. EUF Norg was only about 2% of the total N. This relatively small EUF‐Norg fraction, however, is relevant for the mineralization of organic soil N, and the N quantity indicated by EUF Norg is in the range of the N amount mineralized in arable soils within a growing season.  相似文献

Calculations with the PROFILE model indicates that present acid deposition will lead to soil solution BC/Al molar ratios in the forest soils of Maryland far below the limits used for calculation of critical loads in Europe. Weathering rates and molar soil solution BC/Al ratios were calculated using measured mineralogy and texture. It has been assumed that the laboratory experiments on tree seedling response to soil solution Al concentration is applicable to field conditions as applied in the PROFILE model and that the observed connection between growth and needle loss for Sweden is also valid for North America. The assumptions were utilized to estimate the potential for forest damage due to soil acidification in Maryland. The results for Maryland was used to speculate over the possibilities for adverse effects due to soil acidity in Northeastern United States. A preliminary comparison with Maryland and European results, suggests that the threat of soil acidification to forest health in the Northeastern United States may have been underestimated.  相似文献

Arsenic mobility, bioavailability, and toxicity in soil‐water systems are strongly affected by species distribution. In spite of species‐selective analytical tools, results may be biased by postsampling oxidation or reduction of compounds. The scope of this study was to delineate a speciation method for inorganic arsenic integrated with pore‐water sampling to prevent problems related to postsampling species transformation. Experiments were performed with exchange cartridges packed with quaternary amine (nitrate‐form) to separate anionic arsenate from uncharged arsenite. Standard solutions with varied As(III) : As(V) ratios as well as groundwater and soil‐solution samples were studied. Analyses were performed by ICP‐MS using either extraction cartridges directly coupled to the instrument or samples obtained by offline speciation tests. Results showed that As(III) passes the packed bed with the rinsing solution, while As(V) is retained on the column and can be released by elution with 0.25 M NH4NO3. Recoveries between 98% and 116% were insensitive to pH variation (pH 3–8) and competing anions. Groundwater samples from a contaminated site yielded recoveries between 92% and 125% when the sum of As(III) and As(V) was compared to total As. Integration of the speciation scheme with pore‐water sampling was tested in a soil‐column experiment. Soil material from a fen site with elevated geogenic As contents was subjected to a varying moisture regime. Reducing conditions during prolonged saturation caused a marked increase of As(III) concentrations. Conversely, when the soil was drained, total As levels decreased and were dominated by As(V). Overall, extraction results with standard solutions and natural samples indicate reliable performance of the method in experimental investigations and field studies.  相似文献

Sphingolipid metabolites regulate cellular processes such as cell proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis. In this study, glucocerebrosides (GluCer) from rhizomes of Arisaema amurense and Pinellia ternata were fully characterized using 1- and 2-dimensional nuclear magnetic spin resonance (NMR) and circular dichroism (CD) spectroscopy and tandem collision-induced dissociation mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/CID-MS). Three new acylated and seven known GluCer were elucidated with 4,8-sphingadienine (4,8-SD, d18:2) as backbone. 4,8-SD is a metabolite after enzymatical hydrolysis of GluCer in the gut lumen. In this study, 4,8-SD was hydrolyzed from GluCer and chromatographically purified on silica gel. In contrast to the GluCer, 4,8-SD showed cytotoxic effects in the WST-1 assay. GluCer with 4,8-SD as sphingoid backbone are present in plants consumed as food, such as spinach, soy, and eggplant.  相似文献

Context

Pasture-woodlands are semi-natural landscapes that result from the combined influences of climate, management, and intrinsic vegetation dynamics. These landscapes are sensitive to future changes in land use and climate, but our ability to predict the impact on ecosystem service provisioning is limited due to the disparate scales in time and space that govern their dynamics.

Objectives

To develop a process-based model to simulate pasture-woodland landscapes and the provisioning of ecosystem services (i.e., livestock forage, woody biomass and landscape heterogeneity).

Methods

We modified a dynamic forest landscape model to simulate pasture-woodland landscapes in Switzerland. This involved including an annual herbaceous layer, selective grazing from cattle, and interactions between grazing and tree recruitment. Results were evaluated within a particular pasture, and then the model was used to simulate regional vegetation patterns and livestock suitability for a ~198,000 ha landscape in the Jura Vaudois region.

Results

The proportion of vegetation cover types at the pasture level (i.e., open, semi-open and closed forests) was well represented, but the spatial distribution of trees was only broadly similar. The entire Jura Vaudois region was simulated to be highly suitable for livestock, with only a small proportion being unsuitable due to steep slopes and high tree cover. High and low elevation pastures were equally suitable for livestock, as lower forage production at higher elevations was compensated by reduced tree cover.

Conclusions

The modified model is valuable for assessing landscape to regional patterns in vegetation and livestock, and offers a platform to evaluate how climate and management impact ecosystem services.

An assessment of the potential for 17 fish or shellfish stocks or stock groups to move from the sub‐Arctic areas into the Arctic Ocean was conducted. A panel of 34 experts was convened to assess the impact of climate change on the potential movement of the 17 stocks or stock groups. The panel considered the exposure of species to climate change, the sensitivity of species to these changes and the adaptive capacity of each stock or stock group. Based on expert opinions, the potential for expansion or movement into the Arctic was qualitatively ranked (low potential, potential, high potential). It is projected that the Arctic Ocean will become ice‐free during the summer season, and when this happens new areas will open up for plankton production, which may lead to new feeding areas for fish stocks. Five stocks had a low potential to move to, or expand in, the high Arctic. Six species are considered as potential candidate species to move to, or expand in, the high Arctic. Six stocks had a high potential of establishing viable resident populations in the region. These six stocks exhibit life history characteristics that allow them to survive challenging environmental conditions that will continue to prevail in the north. This study suggests that several life history factors should be considered when assessing the potentiality of a species moving in response to changing climate conditions.  相似文献

We examined the impact of picnic activities on forest diversity, structure, regeneration and vitality of tree species in the Bhawal National Park of Bangladesh. The study area was classified as a non-used, occasionally used and frequently used area on the basis of the intensity of the picnic activities. A total of 43 plant species were enumerated in the whole study area. The highest plant species richness (41 species) was observed in the non-used area whereas the lowest species richness (11 species) in the frequently used area. The diversity index decreased with the increase of picnic intensity whereas the concentration of dominance increased. Density of all plant groups except mature trees, and the basal area of the mature trees showed a declining trend from the non-used to frequently used area. The frequently used area exhibited very poor regeneration. Tree vitality decreased with the increase of picnic intensity. The relevance of our study as a basis for further research to determine the impact of tourism on biodiversity in Bangladesh is discussed.  相似文献
