Anthropogenic understory fires have affected large areas of tropical forest in recent decades, particularly during severe droughts. Yet, the mechanisms that control fire-induced mortality of tropical trees and lianas remain ambiguous due to the challenges associated with documenting mortality given variation in fire behavior and forest heterogeneity. In a seasonally dry Amazon forest, we conducted a burn experiment to quantify how increasing understory fires alter patterns of stem mortality. From 2004 to 2007, tree and liana mortality was measured in adjacent 50-ha plots that were intact (B0 - control), burned once (B1), and burned annually for 3 years (B3). After 3 years, cumulative tree and liana mortality (≥1 cm dbh) in the B1 (5.8% yr−1) and B3 (7.0% yr−1) plots significantly exceeded mortality in the control (3.2% yr−1). However, these fire-induced mortality rates are substantially lower than those reported from more humid Amazonian forests. Small stems were highly vulnerable to fire-induced death, contrasting with drought-induced mortality (measured in other studies) that increases with tree size. For example, one low-intensity burn killed >50% of stems <10 cm within a year. Independent of stem size, species-specific mortality rates varied substantially from 0% to 17% yr−1 in the control, 0% to 26% yr−1 in B1, and 1% to 23% yr−1 in B3, with several species displaying high variation in their vulnerability to fire-induced mortality. Protium guianense (Burseraceae) exhibited the highest fire-induced mortality rates in B1 and B3, which were 10- and 9-fold greater than the baseline rate. In contrast, Aspidosperma excelsum (Apocynaceae), appeared relatively unaffected by fire (0.3% to 1.0% mortality yr−1 across plots), which may be explained by fenestration that protects the inner concave trunk portions from fire. For stems ≥10 cm, both char height (approximating fire intensity) and number of successive burns were significant predictors of fire-induced mortality, whereas only the number of consecutive annual burns was a strong predictor for stems <10 cm. Three years after the initial burn, 62 ± 26 Mg ha−1 (s.e.) of live biomass, predominantly stems <30 cm, was transferred to the dead biomass pool, compared with 8 ± 3 Mg ha−1 in the control. This biomass loss from fire represents ∼30% of this forest's aboveground live biomass (192 (±3) Mg ha−1; >1 cm DBH). Although forest transition to savanna has been predicted based on future climate scenarios, our results indicate that wildfires from agricultural expansion pose a more immediate threat to the current carbon stocks in Amazonian forests.  相似文献

The Amazon region comprises a plethora of fruit-bearing species of which a large number are still agriculturally unimportant. Because fruit consumption has been attributed to an enhanced physical well-being, interest in the knowledge of the chemical composition of underexplored exotic fruits has increased during recent years. This paper provides a comprehensive identification of the polyphenolic constituents of four underutilized fruits from the Amazon region by HPLC/DAD-ESI-MS(n). Arac?a? ( Psidium guineense ), jambola?o ( Syzygium cumini ), muruci ( Byrsonima crassifolia ), and cutite ( Pouteria macrophylla ) turned out to be primarily good sources of hydrolyzable tannins and/or flavonols. Additionally, different flavanonols and proanthocyanidins were identified in some fruits. The antioxidant capacity was determined by using the total oxidant scavenging capacity (TOSC) assay. This work evaluated the effects of food frequencies and self-feeding on the behavior, performance, and blood biochemistry of Colossoma macropomum. Juveniles weighing 3.63?±?0.05 g were distributed in 27 aquariums (40 L), with six fish per aquarium, to evaluate nine treatments in three replications in a 12L:12D photoperiod. The treatments were 24-h self-feeding (SF); daytime self-feeding at will (SFD); nighttime self-feeding at will (SFN); and feeding at fixed frequencies of two (2D), four (4D), and six times (6D) daytime and twice (2 N), four (4 N), and six times (6 N) nightly. The treatments were offered in automatic feeders, with fixed frequencies programmed. Extruded commercial feed, with 46% protein, was used. The experimental period was 40 days. In the SF treatment, the animals exhibited 95.7% nocturnal and 4.3% diurnal feeding activity (p?<?0.05). In the treatment SFD and SFN, the animals showed feeding activity throughout the day and night. Final weight, weight gain, and total feed intake were higher for animals at fixed daytime and nighttime frequencies (p?<?0.05). Feed conversion was better for animals in SF, SFD, 4D, SFN, and 4 N (0.89, 0.76, 0.91, 0.85, and 0.88, respectively) (p?<?0.05). Cholesterol and high-density lipoproteins were lower for fish in SF, SFN, 2 N, 4 N, and 6 N (p?<?0.05). SF treatment animals had lower triglyceride content, 154.20 mg dL?1 (p?<?0.05). Colossoma macropomum has nocturnal food preferences, however, with remarkable plasticity. Juveniles of this species fed four times during the day or night show good performance. Dietary patterns influenced the blood metabolic indicators of this species and the periods studied.

The objective of the research was to evaluate recurrent selection strategies in maize (Zea mays L.) by determining the expected and realized responses to selection, as well as the alterations in heterosis, of hybrids from the cross between the original populations (C0) and the third cycle (C3). The genetic variances and covariances were obtained for intrapopulational (P11 and P22) and interpopulational (P12 and P21) half-sib progenies from populations 1 and 2 in cycles C0 and C3. One-hundred progenies of each type were evaluated [husked ear weight (g plant?1)] at two separate locations by conducting 10 × 10 triple lattice design experiments contiguous for each cycle. Four different recurrent selection strategies were investigated: reciprocal recurrent selection (RRS), interpopulation testcross half-sib selection (THS 1 and THS 2) and intrapopulational half-sib recurrent selection (HSS). THS 1, which employed population 1 (with the lowest frequency of favorable alleles) as tester, was most efficient in the simultaneous improvement of the hybrid and the two populations per se. RRS showed the highest efficiency in improving the interpopulational hybrid but not in the parental populations. In order to estimate heterosis and realized responses to RRS, representative samples of seed from intra and inter-populational half-sib progenies from C0 and C3 were employed in randomized block design experiments with 10 repetitions carried out at two separate locations. RRS increased heterosis in the interpopulational hybrid from 12.3 % (C0) to 24.9 % (C3), and the productivity gain [husked ear weight (t ha?1)] was 13.5 % over the three cycles.  相似文献

Bovine mastitis remains worldwide a major challenge for the dairy industry despite the widespread implementation of control strategies. The increasing number of coagulase-negative staphylococci (CNS) causing mastitis and of bacteria resistant to conventional antibiotics has become a serious problem in recent years. Marine sponges are a rich source of bioactive compounds, and many species can be useful for the development of new antimicrobial drugs. In the present study, 49 CNS strains were isolated from bovine mastitis cases from 21 different dairy herds kept at farms in Southeast Brazil. Strains were analyzed for antimicrobial susceptibility and mecA gene detection. Fifty-nine percent of the CNS strains were resistant to at least one of the drugs tested and 12.2% were classified as multiresistant. Three strains carried the mecA gene, confering resistance to the beta-lactamic antibiotics. In addition, the CNS strains were submitted to in vitro screening for antimicrobial activities of extracts from marine sponges. Extracts from the sponge species Cinachyrella sp., Haliclona sp. and Petromica citrina showed antibacterial activity against 61% of the CNS strains, including strains resistant to conventional antibiotics. Extracts from P. citrina showed the largest spectrum of inhibitory activity. The aqueous extract inhibited 51% of the CNS strains and presented a bactericidal effect over susceptible and multiresistant-bacteria at a minimal inhibitory concentration of 1.024μg/ml. This study shows the potential of marine sponges as new sources of antibiotics and disinfectants for the control of CNS involved in bovine mastitis.  相似文献

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are a group of calcium- and zinc-dependent endopeptidases that are involved in maintaining the extracellular matrix. MMP-2 and MMP-9 are thought to be related to the disruption of the blood-brain-barrier (BBB) by their ability to cleave type IV collagen, the main component of the basal membrane. To establish the presence of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in the pathogenesis of canine cerebral leishmaniasis, we examined the levels of these metalloproteinases in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of dogs with visceral leishmaniasis and neurological symptoms (n=16) and in the CSF and serum of uninfected healthy dogs (n=10) using zymography. In the CSF of dogs with cerebral leishmaniasis there was a massive presence of active MMP-2, whereas only the levels of both proMMP-2 and proMMP-9 were elevated in the serum. Although the detected MMP activity in the CSF might merely be related to CNS inflammation, these enzymes may also play a collaborative role in the disease progression. Both MMP-2 and MMP-9 are known to target critical constituents of the BBB, and once activated, they may promote cerebral barrier breakdown, allowing the entrance of inflammatory cells and proteins within the nervous system milieu.  相似文献

Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex, which includes Mycobacterium bovis, infrequently causes severe or lethal disease in captive wildlife populations. A dead coati from a wildlife triage center showing pulmonary lesions compatible with tuberculosis had raised suspicion of a potential disease caused by mycobacteria species and was further investigated. Four native coatis (Nasua nasua) with suspected mycobacterial infection were sedated, and bronchoalveolar lavages and tuberculin skin tests (TSTs) were performed. All animals tested positive upon TST. Mycobacterial culturing, Ziehl-Neelsen staining, and genetic testing were performed on postmortem samples and the etiologic agent was identified as M. bovis. Molecular genetic identification using a polymerase chain reaction panel was crucial to achieving a definitive diagnosis.  相似文献
