Progesterone (P4)-impregnated intravaginal controlled internal drug-releasing devices (CIDRs) have been used worldwide for estrus synchronization in ruminants. CIDRs serve to place all treated animals in the luteal phase of the estrous cycle. The objectives of this study were to compare P4 concentrations in milk from normal reproductively cycling, CIDR-treated, and pregnant goats. CIDRs were placed in treatment goats on day 0 and removed on day 19. Milk was collected daily from day 0 to day 21 from control and CIDR-treated goats and for 5 consecutive days between 40 and 60 days of gestation from pregnant does. Milk P4 was plotted against time (in days) for each individual, and the area under the curve (AUC) was calculated as an estimate of total milk P4. The AUC(day 0-21) for control and CIDR-treated goats were 29.5 ± 11.9 and 33.7 ± 6.6 d·ng/mL, respectively (P = 0.77). The highest single-day and highest 5-day average P4 values for each animal were also compared among groups. Single-day peak P4 levels were 4.8 ± 1.5, 4.0 ± 1.0, and 6.0 ± 0.4 ng/mL for control, CIDR-treated, and pregnant goats (P = 0.42). The highest 5-day average P4 concentrations were 3.6 ± 1.3, 2.9 ± 1.8, and 4.2 ± 0.3 for control, CIDR-treated, and pregnant goats (P = 0.56). The results of this study show that intravaginal P4 CIDR devices inserted for 19 days in healthy goats resulted in milk P4 levels similar to or less than those endogenously produced during diestrus or pregnancy.  相似文献

Sulfur has been widely used for centuries as a staple for pest and disease management in agriculture. Presently, it is the largest‐volume pesticide in use worldwide. This review describes the sources and recovery methods for sulfur, its allotropic forms and properties and its agricultural uses, including development and potential advantages of nanosulfur as a fungicide. Chemical and microbial reactivity, interactions in soil and water and analytical methods for determination in environmental samples and foodstuffs, including inexpensive analytical methods for sulfur residues in wine, beer and other food/beverage substrates, will be reviewed. The toxicology of sulfur towards humans and agriculturally important fungi is included, with some restrictions on use to promote safety. Existing plants remaining in failed stands of maize must be removed prior to planting a subsequent crop, and glyphosate and glufosinate are generally ineffective because of the presence of herbicide-resistant genes in most US maize. Research was conducted at three locations in 2009 to evaluate maize control with paraquat as influenced by (1) the addition of three PSII-inhibiting herbicides, (2) maize growth stage at application with and without addition of atrazine, and (3) time of day of application with and without addition of atrazine. Delaying an application of paraquat beyond the V4 stage (four visible collars) of maize resulted in ineffective control of maize, and the addition of atrazine to paraquat improved control of older plants. A paraquat dose of at least 525 g/ha was often needed for acceptable control of maize. Of the three PSII-inhibiting herbicides evaluated, maize control was generally greater and more consistent with the addition of metribuzin or diuron to paraquat than with atrazine, even though atrazine did often improve control over paraquat alone. Applying paraquat at sunset did improve control over applications made near sunrise, but a PSII-inhibiting herbicide was still needed with paraquat to maximize control of maize. These findings demonstrate that undesirable maize plants can be effectively controlled with combinations of paraquat plus PSII-inhibiting herbicides when applied no later than the V4 stage of maize, and applications in close proximity to sunset can further improve control.  相似文献

Eleven crossbred barrows were housed in environmentally controlled rooms with an 8-h photoperiod. Pigs in one room received control illumination of 113 1x (CON; n = 6), and pigs in the other room received intense illumination of 1,783 1x (INT; n = 5) fluorescent light. Pigs were given at least 20 d of exposure to the environment before blood samples were taken every 3 h for 48 h. Data were analyzed by split-plot analysis of variance. Except for prolactin, no treatment x time interactions were noted for the hormone profiles evaluated (P greater than .10). Pigs in INT had greater (P less than .05) concentrations of prolactin in serum than pigs in CON at every sampling time. Concentrations of ACTH and cortisol in plasma were similar for INT (33.9 +/- 3.2 pg/mL of ACTH and 24.4 +/- 3.4 ng/mL of cortisol, respectively) and CON (34.9 +/- 3.0 pg/mL of ACTH and 31.3 +/- 3.1 ng/mL of cortisol, respectively). Within the INT treatment, serum melatonin concentrations were more than doubled (P less than .05) during darkness (66.8 +/- 9.3 pg/mL) compared with during light (30.4 +/- 9.3 pg/mL); however, within the CON treatment, concentrations during light and darkness did not differ (38.4 +/- 9.3 pg/mL and 42.9 +/- 9.3 pg/mL, respectively). Results indicate that light of greater intensity is required to entrain circadian rhythms of melatonin in serum of pigs. Furthermore, pigs may respond to bright light with greater secretion of prolactin, even under constant duration of photoperiod.  相似文献

Three steers with simple rumen and abomasal cannulas were given ground and pelleted diets containing predominantly dried grass meal (DG) or rolled barley (RB). Diets were given at frequencies of two or eight feeds/d in a simple changeover design. Chromic oxide and polyethylene glycol were given as flow markers and flows (g/24 h) of organic matter (OM), nitrogenous and carbohydrate compounds were calculated. Ribonucleic acid and 35S were used as microbial markers and diaminopimelic acid (DAP) as a bacterial marker. Frequency of feeding had no significant effect on mean rumen pH, ammonia levels or liquid outflow rates with either diet. Rumen volume was decreased and abomasal digesta flow increased on Diet DG with more feeds but these parameters were unaffected with Diet RB. Increased feeding frequency with both feeds resulted in increased numbers of protozoa. There were no significant effects of feeding frequency of Diet DG on the abomasal flows of any of the nitrogenous constituents measured. However, there was a significant increase in microbial-N flow from 33 to 43 g/d with more frequent feeding of diet RB which was not reflected in bacterial-N flow as measured by DAP. The apparent digestion of OM in the rumen, expressed as g/g intake with diet DG was 0.41 and 0.31 for two feeds and eight feeds/d respectively. Corresponding values for diet RB were 0.56 and 0.63 respectively. The reduction in OM digestion with frequent feeding of diet DG was reflected in similarly reduced rumen digestibilities of all dietary carbohydrate components whereas the increase in OM digestion with diet RB was reflected only by the component sugars of the dietary fibre. The efficiencies of microbial protein synthesis (expressed as gMN/kg ADOM) increased from 36 to 46 when the feeding frequency of diet DG was increased from two to eight times/d. No significant effect of frequency of feeding was found for diet RB. Mouth to abomasum degradation of feed-N (expressed as g/g intake) of 0.64 was unaffected by the number of feeds of diet DG but was significantly increased from 0.55 to 0.82 when eight rather than two feeds/d of diet RB were given.  相似文献

Friesian steers, virtually protozoa free, were equipped with simple rumen and abomasal cannulas. They were given diets consisting of approximately equal proportions of ground, pelleted alkali treated straw and a rolled barley, tapioca mixture supplemented with urea + casein (UC), soybean meal (SBM), 'normal' white fishmeal (NDF) or white fishmeal designated as being of 'low' rumen degradability (LDF). The diets were isoenergetic (the protein sources replacing part of the tapioca) and they were given in amounts to supply sufficient metabolizable energy (ME) to support an average growth rate of 0.5 kg/d. Rumen degradable nitrogen (RDN): ME values were estimated to be 2.08, 1.40, 1.90 and 1.66 for diets UC, SBM, NDF and LDF respectively. RNA, alpha-epsilon-diaminopimelic acid and 35S (added as sulphate) were used as bacterial markers. Chromic oxide and polyethylene glycol (PEG) were given as flow markers and flows (g/24 h) at the abomasum of organic matter (OM) and nitrogenous constituents were calculated. Rumen volumes and ruminal liquid fractional outflow rates were measured using PEG. Samples of mixed rumen bacteria separated from strained rumen digesta from animals receiving diet UC contained significantly less DAP-N (0.322 g/kg DM) than those from animals receiving diets SBM, NDF or LDF (0.530 g/kg DM). Mean rumen volume (approximately 15 l) and liquid fractional outflow rates (approximately 0.105/h) were similar on all diets but there was appreciable variation between animals. The proportion of OM intake digested in the rumen was similar on all diets. The proportional contribution of bacterial-N to the total non-ammonia-N passing the abomasum based on mean values derived from DAP and 35S as markers was 0.57, 0.47, 0.39 and 0.31 for diets UC, SBM, NDF and LDF respectively. Corresponding values based on RNA were 0.71, 0.50, 0.48 and 0.35 respectively. Bacterial-N (RNA) flows at the abomasum were 31, 25, 26 and 20 g/d for diets UC, SBM, NDF and LDF respectively. Corresponding values for 35S and DAP were 26, 24, 21 and 18 g/d respectively. Values derived from RNA flows were consistently and significantly higher (P less than 0.01) than those based on DAP or 35S. Mean estimated efficiencies of bacterial protein synthesis (g bacterial-N/kg OM truly digested) were 15, 15, 14 and 12 for diets UC, SBM, NDF and LDF respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)  相似文献
