Flavonoids are an important constituent of the human diet. In recent years, they have gained much attention due to their physiological properties, leading to an enormous increase in research on cancer prevention and reduction of cardiovascular diseases. Unfortunately, there is limited information about the fate of flavonoid glycosides during thermal treatment such as cooking, frying, roasting, etc. Such processing techniques may have an impact on the flavonoid structure, resulting in changes of the bioavailability and activity of the flavonoids. In this study, the stability of selected model and onion quercetin glycosides under roasting conditions (180 degrees C) was determined. The influence of the kind and position of the sugar moiety was investigated. As onions contain large amounts of quercetin glycosides and are often subject to thermal processes in food production, their major glycosides were isolated using counter current chromatography and roasted. The thermal treatment led to a degradation of the quercetin glycosides. The main product is the aglycone quercetin, which remained stable during further roasting. During the roasting process of the quercetin diglucoside isolated from onion, the formation of a monoglycoside as an intermediate product was observed. This underlined that the stability of the glycosides is dependent on the kind and position of the sugar moiety. 相似文献

Gradients in stressed areas potentially provide a powerful tool to interpret relations between soil biodiversity and site quality. We measured soil chemistry, soil microbiology and nematodes along three transects representing a fertility gradient and at a disturbed site near a road in a Dracophyllum subulatum-dominated shrubland in which frosts are a major factor in preventing succession to forest; we used D. subulatum size as a site-quality index. Significant correlations between both shrub height and shrub growth rate and volumetric measures of total soil phosphorus and anaerobically mineralisable nitrogen indicate that nitrogen and phosphorus regulate plant growth. Microbial biomass and total nematode abundance significantly increased with greater plant growth, presumably in response to greater litter input. Conversely, neither heterotrophic microbial diversity nor nematode diversity was correlated with shrub performance along the transects. Litter was from a single species and thus likely similar in quality so changes in microbial or nematode diversity might not be expected. In this oligotrophic environment, nutrient levels were not only the important regulators of plant growth but also appeared to have an indirect influence on the size of the microbial and nematode populations. 相似文献

Among industrialized nations Germany ranks fourth in CO2 emissions. Most of these originate from the use of fossil fuels. Based on reports of a parliamentary study commission, established in 1987, and other expert groups in Germany this article adresses possible environmental effects of increasing atmospheric CO2, the sink potential of temperate forests and the influence of forest damage on this potential. A strategy for a 25 to 30% or 250 to 300×106 t yr?1 CO2 emissions reduction by 2005 (which Germany has itself committed to) is described in which measures to enhance C sequestration by forests play an important role. Expansion of forest area, a further increase of C storage by appropriate management and the restoration and protection of forest health impaired by air pollution would result in an additional storage of 17 to 20×106 t yr?1 of CO2, equaling 6 to 8% of the reduction target. 相似文献

Expression of the major inducible heat-shock protein of 68 kDa (hsp68) has been analyzed in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMC) from cattle and in six Theileria annulata- and two bovine leukemia virus-transformed bovine lymphoblastoid cell lines (BoLCL). By metabolic labeling, hsp68 could be detected in PBMC and BoLCL only after heat-shock, but not under normal culture conditions. Immunoblot analysis with an hsp68 reactive monoclonal antibody similarly revealed a strong hsp68 response after heat-shock in BoLCL, and no hsp68 expression under normal culture conditions. Normally kept PBMC, however, were weakly positive with the antibody. The data are discussed with respect to the constitutive expression of hsp68 seen in several other cell lines. 相似文献

Archey's frogs (Leiopelma archeyi) are first on the list of evolutionarily distinct and globally endangered (EDGE) amphibians. Captive breeding is an important strategy for protection of the species, but programs are hampered by a lack of information on diseases present in wild and captive populations. Two novel nematodes (Koerneria sp. and Rhabditis sp.) were found separately in four captive Archey's frogs showing clinical signs of hemorrhagic purulent nasal discharge and weight loss. One of these frogs also had a novel protozoal infection (Tetrahymena) in the nasal cavity. Koerneria, Rhabditis, and Tetrahymena have not previously been reported in amphibians in New Zealand. One frog was treated successfully with oral moxidectin at 0.4 mg/kg for the nematode infection and topical metronidazole at 10 mg/kg for the protozoal infection. The clinical signs abated only after both infections were cleared. The second frog died before treatment could be established. The third and fourth frogs were found dead. 相似文献

Meloidogyne ethiopica is a tropical root-knot nematode species which has recently been found in Europe. We examined its ability to survive in open
fields located in regions with sub-Mediterranean and continental European climates. The outdoor microplot experiment consisted
of two locations and lasted three growing and two winter seasons. It was demonstrated that M. ethiopica was able to survive at both locations and also that it retained its infection ability although temperatures below zero were
recorded. The correct species was confirmed after each winter season by isozyme electrophoresis. Furthermore, the influence
of temperature on the reproduction cycle of M. ethiopica was investigated. Meloidogyne ethiopica required 67, 48 and 36 days to complete the reproduction cycle at mean daily temperatures of 18.3, 22.7 and 26.3°C, respectively.
At 13.9°C, M. ethiopica was not able to reproduce. The data obtained from these experiments were used to develop a correlation between temperature
and the time needed for M. ethiopica to complete a reproduction cycle using a mathematical equation. Furthermore, eight vegetable crops that are important for

Ecosystem services provided by earthworms include increasing soil fertility, recycling organic material and provision of food for numerous predatory species. Estimating the role of earthworms in food webs is essential for a thorough evaluation of the ecosystem services they provide. Although their soft bodies are rapidly digested, earthworm remains can be detected via their chaetae in the faeces of predators.This study proposes a method for the identification of predated earthworm species using only predator faeces. We conducted morphological and molecular analyses of earthworm remains in the faeces of a highly endangered carnivorous land snail (Powelliphanta augusta) endemic to a restricted area of New Zealand.Microscopic examination of faecal strings from P. augusta showed the presence of earthworm chaetae in 47 of the 49 strings examined, suggesting an important role for earthworms in snail diets. Although earthworm tissue was not detectable in snail faeces, earthworm DNA was still present in sufficient quantity for molecular identification. Results showed that this land snail feeds on at least five species of New Zealand endemic earthworms.The method developed here is particularly appropriate for investigating the diet of potential invertebrate and vertebrate predators for which feeding behaviour is difficult to observe and gut content analysis is not possible. Such studies can help to develop a more complete understanding of the ecosystem services provided by earthworm communities. Purpose
Within the regulatory framework for authorisation of plant protection products (PPPs) (EU Directive 91/414/1991/EEC replaced by Regulation (EC) 1107/2009), higher tier risk assessments and earthworm field tests are conducted in different countries across Europe. This paper describes dominant earthworm species for regulatory and biogeographical regions in agricultural landscapes across Europe and examines regional differences in earthworm communities and densities and their respective response to a toxic reference.Materials and methods
For the assessment of earthworm abundance and species distribution, data of untreated control plots from 30 earthworm field studies were analysed; each conducted according to the ISO 11268–3 (1999) guideline by European Crop Protection Association member companies in the context of registration of PPPs. For the evaluation of the response to PPPs under different regional and climatic conditions, the effect on earthworm abundance was assessed by comparing plots treated with toxic references with untreated control plots. Additionally, a comparative literature review was included providing an overview of earthworm species composition and densities in agricultural crops from 14 European countries.Results and discussion
The assessment of earthworm field studies from six different European countries revealed that common earthworm species of anecic and endogeic ecological groups are present at most field sites. Dominant species groups of endogeic and anecic earthworms can be defined that are abundant in all assessed countries. These are the endogeic species Aporrectodea caliginosa, Aporrectodea rosea and Allolobophora chlorotica, and the anecic species Lumbricus terrestris (Northern and Central Europe) and Lumbricus friendi (Southern Europe). Taking into account the high variability in total earthworm abundances, it can be concluded that the variability within regions was larger than the variability between regions.Conclusions

The salmon louse Caligus rogercresseyi (Boxshall and Bravo 2000) is a common ectoparasite of farmed salmonids in Chile. Sea lice can negatively impact the growth of hosts, adversely affecting aquaculture productivity. Unlike Lepeophtheirus salmonis (Krøyer, 1838), whose life cycle parameters have been well studied due to its importance in the Northern Hemisphere, for C. rogercresseyi no single source exists that quantifies the parameters required to model this ectoparasite's life cycle. Given that different species of sea lice have substantially different biological characteristics, it is important to parameterize the life cycle of C. rogercresseyi using appropriate observational data, rather than simply trying to adapt parameters developed for L. salmonis. Using data from existing literature, we quantified the development and survival rates for each stage in the C. rogercresseyi life cycle. We illustrate how development rates are affected by water temperature and explore the important impacts of salinity on rates of survival. We present equations that can be used to model development periods and survival proportions given certain water temperature and salinity profiles. While key parameters to quantitatively model the life cycle of C. rogercresseyi are presented, further research is required to adequately model the complete population dynamics of this ectoparasite on Chilean salmon farms and consequently to support decision-making to achieve effective control and mitigation. 相似文献
