Purpose

Windthrows and fires are major natural disturbances in forest ecosystems, which can affect organic matter in the surface and the mineral layer of forest soil. The main aim of this study was to evaluate the changes occurring in the structure and properties of humic acid (HA) in the lands where windthrows and wildfires occurred.

Materials and methods

In November 2004, the forest in the area of 12,000 ha in the Tatra National Park, Slovakia, was seriously damaged by northern wind gusts exceeding 200 km/h. In July 2005, a wildfire broke out in a 220 ha of wind-damaged area. The HAs have been isolated from four research plots: (a) the area where the fallen trees were removed (EXT); (b) an area after windstorm covered by wood from struck trees (NEX), left for spontaneous succession; (c) an area after extracted timber, damaged by the surface wildfire (FIR); and (d) a reference intact spruce forest area (REF). Changes in the chemical structure of the HAs isolated from the research plots were determined on the basis of elemental analysis and UV-Vis, EPR, IR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy.

Results and discussion

All used analytical methods showed a decrease in the humification degree of the humic acids extracted from the soils where the spruce forest has been affected by a wildfire and a windthrow. In the case of the control sample HA (REF), the calculated atomic H/C and O/C ratios and the degree of aromaticity (α) calculated from the 13C NMR spectra were higher, indicating higher aromaticity of HA from the REF area. The more complex and developed structure of REF HA was confirmed by the higher value of E1%6 and the lower E4/E6 ratio obtained using UV-Vis spectroscopy. Also, the higher g-parameters determined from the EPR spectra of the stable radicals present in HA confirmed the lower aromaticity on the plots that have been subjected to the calamities. The 13C NMR spectra and the elemental analysis show that the structure of the HA extracted from the NEX plot is the closest to the REF.

Conclusions

The results of the systematic research showed significant changes in the structure of HA taken from spruce forest soils that were subjected to windstorms and fires. An enrichment of the HAs in aliphatic carbon and so a lower humification degree of the organic matter in the areas calamity-affected were observed. The results clearly indicate that the HAs extracted from the disturbed plots of the spruce forest are not as stable as those extracted taken from the control plot.

This paper presents transformations of saturated hydrocarbons of petroleum type pollutants during ex situ bioremediation of soil on the pilot heap (halde), during a period of 6 months, within the grounds of Petroleum Refinery Pan?evo (Serbia). Samples for analysis were taken in time intervals of 2 weeks (P1–P12 samples). Organic substance was extracted by Soxhlet’s method and quantified. Isoprenoid aliphatics, in particular pristane and phytane, and polycyclic aliphatics of sterane and triterpane types in saturated hydrocarbon fractions were analysed by GC-MS (SIM method). Significant amounts of n-alkanes have not been detected. The MS-chromatogram revealed only marginal amounts of pristane and phytane in sample P1. Pristane and phytane occurred in sample P8, and in even higher quantities in the final sample P12. The proceeding bioremediation process was accompanied by the decrease of the relative amounts of pentacyclic terpanes of hopane type, compared to tri- and tetracyclic terpanes. In the initial sample P1 the distribution of steranes and hopanes follows a pattern, which is characteristic for crude oils. However, their identification by SIM method was not possible in samples P8 and P12 because of the reduced concentration. The observed changes in the alkane fractions’ compositions may be considered as atypical, referring to the fact that during oil biodegradation under natural conditions, decomposition of isoprenoids occurs much easier and faster than decomposition of polycyclic alkanes of tri-, tetra- and pentacyclic terpane, sterane and diasterane types, after the decomposition of n-alkanes has been almost completed.  相似文献

Biochar is obtained by the pyrolysis of biomass, and contains abundant carbon and minerals. Biochar supplementation of soils can greatly improve soil health and quality, but these beneficial effects typically develop slowly over time. Depending on the quality of the biochar and the soil to which it is applied, it may take years before positive effects are apparent. This is because organic substances are slowly sorbed onto the biochar over time, and the biochar eventually becomes part of the sorption complex of the soil. It is therefore advisable to apply biochar together with some organic material. We examined the effect of co-application of different doses of biochar with manure on soil dehydrogenase activity (DHA), soil oxidizable carbon (COX), cumulative soil respiration, soil buffering capacity, the soil exchange reaction (pH/KCl) and the production yield of winter rape seeds. We also determined seed production when artificial granular fertilizers were added to biochar and manure. The results showed that the application of biochar and manure significantly increased grain yield, DHA, the soil exchange reaction and cumulative respiration. Thus, application of biochar with organic material can increase seed yield and some properties of agricultural soils. However, the positive effect of biochar on seed yield was not directly proportional to biochar dose, in that the seed yield was lower for a biochar dose of 45 t/ha than 30 t/ha.  相似文献

Degradation Kinetics of an Aged Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soil   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
PM2.5 and PM10 samples were collected in the urban atmosphere of Elche (southeastern Spain) between December 2004 and November 2005. The samples were analyzed for mass and water-soluble inorganic ions (Na+, ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}}$ , K+, Ca2+, Mg2+, Cl?, ${\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}}$ and ${\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}}$ ) with the aim of investigating the influence of the climatic and geographic features of a coastal semiarid area on the contribution of these species to PM levels. Secondary inorganic ions ( ${\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}}$ , ${\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}}$ , ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}}$ ) were the major components in the fine fraction (PM2.5), accounting for 40% of the total mass. The relationship between non-marine ${\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}}$ and ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}}$ indicated that fine sulfate particles were completely neutralized by ammonium. In the coarse fraction (PM10–2.5), nitrate (as NaNO3 and Ca(NO3)2), together with crustal (CaCO3) and marine species (NaCl) accounted for almost 50% of the total mass. Fine sulfate and coarse nitrate showed summer maximums. In contrast, the concentrations of fine ${\text{NO}}^{{\text{ - }}}_{{\text{3}}}$ were lowest in the warm period. Ammonium presented both winter and summer maximums. The levels of marine ions, except for coarse Cl?, were highest in summer when the dominant wind flow is from the sea. No significant seasonal variations were observed for coarse Ca2+ and ${\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}}$ . The concentrations of all inorganic ions increased during Saharan dust events, in particular, fine ${\text{NH}}^{{\text{ + }}}_{{\text{4}}}$ and ${\text{SO}}^{{{\text{2 - }}}}_{{\text{4}}}$ and coarse $NO_3^ - $ . Coarse calcium was proved not to be a good tracer for this type of episode in our region since the average levels of this cation are elevated and the relative increase in its concentrations during African events was not as high as expected.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Die Geschwindigkeit der Respiration, die Freisetzung an Aethylen sowie die Gewichtszunahme an Knollen wurde w?hrend der Vegetation in der Zeit von Juni bis Oktober bei drei Kartoffelsorten (Resy, Karin, Kamyk) unter gleichen Anbaubedingungen geprüft. Die Anfangsphase der Knollenbildung wird durch eine starke Erh?hung der Respirationsaktivit?t und Freisetzung von Aethylen charakterisiert. In der Phase der Hemmung der Wachstumsaktivit?t der Pflanze vermindert sich dann die St?rke der Respiration sowie die Menge an Aethylen, das Knollengewicht steigt weiter an. Die Reihenfolge des Maximums der Respiration und Freisetzung an Aethylen ist nicht gleich, d.h. das Maximum der Respiration wird bei der Sorte Kamyk erreicht. Demgegenüber liegt das Maximum der Freisetzung von Aethylen bei der Sorte Karin. Die H?he der Respiration und die Freisetzung von Aethylen in Beziehung zum Knollengewicht scheint sortenspezifisch zu sein.  相似文献

Summary The results of respective investigations indicate that during white rot the combustion heat of wood (Qexp (J/g)) remained virtually unchanged and at the greatest extent of decomposition it was in the range also found in non-rotten wood. During brown rot the combustion heat of wood samples increased, beginning at a weight loss of 20–30%. The difference between Qexp and the weighted mean of combustion heat values of isolated chemical wood components (Qcal) were neglectable. If Qexp values measured for each sample were taken as 100%, then Qcal averaged from 101.1–105.6% and from 97.4–108.2% during white and brown rot, respectively. The Qcal calculation error is expressed as coefficient k; it varies depending on the accuracy and selectivity of the separation methods used.  相似文献

Thirty‐eight isolates of Rhizoctonia spp. were isolated from Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) seedlings with damping‐off symptoms, originating from two forest nurseries in central‐west Poland (Wronczyn and Jarocin) and from diseased seedlings grown in soil from Wronczyn nursery. Majority of these isolates (79%) had multinucleate cells and were identified as Rhizoctonia solani. The remaining isolates were recognized as binucleate Rhizoctonia spp. R. solani isolates were characterized using hyphal anastomosis and were divided into five anastomosis groups (AG). The most prevalent was AG5 (37% of isolates), followed by AG2‐1 (30%) and 27% of the isolates were identified as AG4. Groups AG1‐IB and AG2‐2 were only represented by single isolates. The virulence recorded as mortality (in percentage) was comparatively high for binucleate and multinucleate isolates of Rhizoctonia spp. Sequence analysis of the polymerase chain reaction (PCR)‐amplified internal transcribed spacer (ITS) rDNA region was used for phylogenetic analysis. The dendrogram showed that isolates were distinctly separated based on their AG types and there was no relationship between pathogenicity on Scots pine seedlings and the AG to which the isolates belong to. The results are discussed with respect to pathogenic potential of the various AG groups.  相似文献

Fifteen eriophyid mite species are the most abundant species in the Czech Republic from which four, viz.Eriophyes fraxinivorus onFraxinus excelsior, E. platanoideus onAcer platanoides, Phytoptus pyri onPyrus communis andStenacis triradiatus on various species ofSalix injure their host plants and are evaluated as pests. The weight of the leaves attacked by eriophyid mites increase with increasing number of galls pro leaf but the surface of attacked leaves decrease with increasing attack. Harmfulness of eriophyid mites manifests by reducing of assimilation processes, retardation of growth, precocious drying and fall-off of attacked leaves.
