Ellagitannins are phenolic compounds that occur in a number of dietary sources such as walnuts, raspberries, pomegranate, strawberries, and oak-aged wines. Ellagitannins have been acknowledged to have antioxidant and cancer chemopreventive activities. However, ellagitannins have also been considered to be "antinutrients" and have been reported to provoke adverse effects in animals. In this context, risk assessment studies are demanded to ensure that chemicals present in food do not compromise food safety. Oak-flavored milk can be obtained by thermal treatment of milk in the presence of oak shavings. The oak-flavored milk can be used to impart wood-like flavor to different recipes. The present study evaluated, under a subchronic approach, the safety of an oak-flavored milk powder containing ellagitannins in rats upon repeated oral administration for 96 days. The effect of 30% oak-flavored milk powder in the diet was evaluated. This amount involved a margin of safety equivalent to the daily intake of 134 yogurts by a 70 kg person for 96 days. Growth rate, food utility index, 9 hematological, and 13 serobiochemical parameters as well as the metabolism and tissue distribution of ellagitannins and derived metabolites were studied. Overall, no significant differences were found in oak-milk-fed rats in any blood parameter analyzed. No effect was found on growth rate and food utility index. Urolithin A was identified in feces of rats fed oak-flavored milk and the glucuronide derivative in urine. No metabolites were found in the liver, kidney, or uterus. Histopathological analysis of liver and kidney corroborated the absence of toxicity. Therefore, these results suggest that the intake of the oak-flavored milk powder assayed in this study is safe and does not involve potential hazard to human health. 相似文献

A peroxidase isozyme (BP) was purified to homogeneity from broccoli stems ( Brassica oleraceae var. maraton) discarded from industrial processing wastes. BP specific activity was 1216 ABTS [2,2'-azinobis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6-sulfonic acid)] units/mg, representing 466-fold that of crude extract. BP is a monomeric glycoprotein containing 16% carbohydrates, with a molecular mass of 49 kDa and an isoelectric point close to 4.2. From kinetic data it showed a two-substrate ping-pong mechanism, and the catalytic efficiency measured as the rate-limiting step of free BP regeneration was 3.4 x 10(6) M(-1) s(-1). The ABTS K m value was 0.2 mM, which was about 20 times lower than that reported for acidic commercial horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Assessment of BP secondary structure showed 30% helical character, similar to HRP and cytochrome c peroxidase. BP lost only 25% activity after 10 min of heating at 55 degrees C and pH 6; it was stable in the pH range from 4 to 9 and showed an optimum pH of 4.6 using ABTS as substrate. BP was active on substrates normally involved in lignin biosynthesis, such as caffeic and ferulic acids, and also displayed good catechol oxidation activity in the presence of hydrogen peroxide. Reverse micellar extraction was successfully used as potential large-scale prepurification of broccoli peroxidase, achieving a purification factor of 7, with 60% activity yield. Stems from the broccoli processing industry have a high potential as an alternative for peroxidase purification. 相似文献

California halibut Paralichthys californicus is an important commercial species with high aquaculture potential in Baja California Sur, México. To optimize the feeding
process using live prey and/or inert diets, we evaluated alkaline proteases, pepsin, trypsin, chymotrypsin, leucine aminopeptidase,
lipase, α-amylase, and acid and alkaline phosphatase activities on starved larvae and larvae fed live prey. Highest activities
were observed for alkaline protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin, leucine aminopeptidase, and alkaline phosphatase in feeding larvae
than starved larvae on day 4 after hatching. At day 5, a sizeable increase in all enzymatic activities was detected in feeding
larvae. Alkaline protease, trypsin, chymotrypsin, and alkaline phosphatase decreases progressively from day 5 until day 18.
At day 18, a slight pepsin activity was observed. This was considered an indicator of the start of digestive system maturation.
We concluded that total enzymatic equipment for this species is complete between day 18 and 30 after hatching. Based on this
evidence, early weaning from live prey to inert feed would be possible at this time. 相似文献

Yerba maté (Ilex paraguariensis) is rich in polyphenols, especially chlorogenic acids. Evidence suggests that dietary polyphenols could play a role in glucose absorption and metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the antidiabetic properties of yerba maté extract in alloxan-induced diabetic Wistar rats. Animals (n = 41) were divided in four groups: nondiabetic control (NDC, n = 10), nondiabetic yerba maté (NDY, n = 10), diabetic control (DC, n = 11), and diabetic yerba maté (DY, n = 10). The intervention consisted in the administration of yerba maté extract in a 1 g extract/kg body weight dose for 28 days; controls received saline solution only. There were no significant differences in serum glucose, insulin, and hepatic glucose-6-phosphatase activity between the groups that ingested yerba maté extract (NDY and DY) and the controls (NDC and DC). However, the intestinal SGLT1 gene expression was significantly lower in animals that received yerba maté both in upper (p = 0.007) and middle (p < 0.001) small intestine. These results indicate that bioactive compounds present in yerba maté might be capable of interfering in glucose absorption, by decreasing SGLT1 expression. 相似文献

A pot experiment was conducted to study the response of nodulated bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), vars. Ceca and Montalbán, to inoculation with the arbuscular‐mycorrhizae (AM) Glomus spurcum strain IES‐3 and G. mosseae strain IES‐8 in two non‐sterilized non‐amended soil substrates (S‐l and S‐2) of contrasting fertility. S‐l was an acid soil (pH 5.0) with 77% exchangeable aluminum (Al), low available phosphorus (P) (3.5 ug g‐1 dry soil) and 1.8% organic matter. S‐2 was a soil with pH 7.0, 7.9 μg P g‐1 dry soil, 9.6% organic matter and no exchangeable Al. Plants growing in S‐1 (S‐1 plants) and S‐2 (S‐2 plants) soils were sampled at the beginning of the flowering stage. S‐1 and S‐2 plants were nodulated by the rhizobial populations native of each soil. S‐1 plants of both varieties did not respond to AM inoculation in term of shoot and root mass, P content, relative abundance of ureides (RAU) and seed yields. Only the total chlorophyll, chlorophyll‐a, chlrophyll‐a/b ratio and nodule mass were significantly enhanced in AM‐inoculated plants. Increased total reducing sugars concentration was detected in roots of S‐1 plants inoculated with G. mosseae. S‐2 plants displayed significantly higher shoot and nodule mass as well as increased total chlorophyll, chlorophyll‐a, chlorophyll‐a/b ratio and P content than S‐1 plants, regardless of the variety and AM inoculation. S‐2 plants of the var Ceca showed a two fold increase in seed yields but similar RAU values (>60%) when compared to S‐1 plants of the same variety. In contrast, the significant increase in RAU detected in S‐2 plants of the var Montalban was not translated into higher seed yields. In S‐2, the productivity of plants of the var Ceca doubled that of the var Montalban. For both bean varieties the highest significant P content and seed yield were observed exclusively in S‐2 plants inoculated with G. mosseae. This Glomelean strain enhanced the sink‐source ratio of the S‐2 plants as evidenced by the higher total reducing sugar concentration in the root mass. Arbuscular‐mycorrhizae inoculation significantly decreased the acid phosphatase activity in the rhizosphere of S‐1 and S‐2 plants, respectively, pointing toward a negative effect of foreign AM on the native microbial biomass. The effectiveness of the rhizobial populations native of each soil type and the weak response elicited by G. mosseae in S‐2 plants do not justify, at present, the inclusion of foreign inocula in the bean crops carried out at S‐1 and S‐2 soils of the Sucre State of Venezuela. Anthrax is a non-contagious disease, known since ancient times. However, it became a matter of global public interest after the bioterrorist attacks in the U.S.A. during the autumn of 2001. The concern of politicians and civil authorities everywhere towards this emergency necessitated a significant research effort and the prevention of new bioterrorist acts. Anthrax is primarily a disease that affects livestock and wildlife; its distribution is worldwide; and it can represent a danger to humans but especially more so when it occurs in areas considered to be free and in atypical seasons and climatic conditions. The atypicality of the phenomenon may lead health workers to misdiagnose and, consequently, an inappropriately manage of affected carcasses with a consequent and inevitable increase in the risk of human infection. This article emphasises the importance of paying increasing attention to this zoonosis. The biggest risk is its underestimation. 相似文献

The objective of this work was to determine the effect of family labour on the profitability and competitiveness of small-scale dairy farms in the highlands of Central Mexico. Economic data from 37 farms were analysed from a stratified statistical sampling with a Neyman assignment. Three strata were defined taking herd size as criterion. Stratum 1: herds from 3 to 9 cows plus replacements, Stratum 2: herds from 10 to 19 cows and Stratum 3: herds from 20 to 30 cows. The policy analysis matrix was used as the method to determine profitability and competitiveness. The coefficient of private profitability (CPP) when the economic cost of family labour is included in the cost structure was 8.0 %, 31.0 % and 46.0 %. When the economic cost of family labour is not included, CPP increase to 47.0 %, 57.0 % and 66.0 % for each strata, respectively. The private cost ratio (PCR) when family labour is included was 0.79, 0.51 and 0.42 for strata 1, 2 and 3, respectively. When family labour is not included, the PCR was 0.07, 0.25 and 0.26. Net profit per litre of milk including family labour was US$0.03 l-1 for Stratum 1, US$0.09 for Stratum 2 and US$0.12 l-1 for Stratum 3; but increased to $0.12, 0.14 and 0.15, respectively, when the economic cost of family labour is not included. It is concluded that family labour is a crucial factor in the profitability and competitiveness of small-scale dairy production. 相似文献

This report describes the clinical and histopathological characteristics of a squamous cell carcinoma infiltrating the cervix and the vaginal wall, producing reproductive symptoms and subnormal fertility in an adult ewe. Necropsy showed a large (15-cm-long) neoplastic mass infiltrating the vaginal wall and the cervix. Histopathological examination revealed atypical squamous epithelial cords invading the basal membrane and dermis, round anaplastic cells, focal areas of necrosis, keratinisation of isolated cells, and pronounced infiltration by mononuclear cells around the cords. No squamous cell carcinoma of such localisation has been reported from sheep before. In humans, this tumour is the most common gynaecological malignancy in the world. 相似文献
