Objective To measure intraocular pressure (IOP) in a group of dogs as puppies and young adults to determine if there is any change during maturation. Animals studied Thirty‐two healthy Labrador Retriever dogs. Procedures Intraocular pressure was measured using a Tonopen XL initially at approximately 6 weeks of age (T1), then again approximately 1 year later (T2). Exact ages were known based on whelp date. Results The dogs had marginally higher IOP OU at T2 (mean = 14.9 mmHg) compared to T1 (mean = 13.4 mmHg). However, the difference was not statistically significant. No differences were seen based on sex and litter. Intraocular pressure OD was statistically greater than OS at T1 but not at T2. Conclusions Normal values for intraocular pressure are the same in puppies and adults. The results of this study do not support the previously suggested theory that younger dogs have sustained increased IOP as a requirement to drive growth of the globe. However, it does not rule out the possibility that a dynamic relationship between intraocular pressure and expansion of the globe may exist. 相似文献

Potential contribution of Lumbricus terrestris L. to carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide fluxes from a forest soil 总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
Potential effects of earthworms (Lumbricus terrestris L.) inoculated into soil on fluxes of CO2, CH4 and N2O were investigated for an untreated and a limed soil under beech in open topsoil columns under field conditions for 120 days.
Gas fluxes from L. terrestris, beech litter and mineral soil from soil columns were measured separately in jars at 17 °C. The inoculation with L. terrestris and the application of lime had no effect on cumulative CO2 emissions from soil. During the first 3–4 weeks earthworms significantly (P<0.05) increased CO2 emissions by 16% to 28%. In contrast, significantly lower (P<0.05) CO2 emission rates were measured after 11 weeks. The data suggest that earthworm activity was high during the first weeks due
to the creation of burrows and incorporation of beech litter into the mineral soil. Low cumulative CH4 oxidation rates were found in all soil columns as a result of CH4 production and oxidation processes. L. terrestris with fresh feces and the beech litter produced CH4 during the laboratory incubation, whereas the mineral soil oxidised atmospheric CH4. Inoculation with L. terrestris led to a significant reduction (P<0.02) in the CH4 oxidation rate of soil, i.e. 53% reduction. Liming had no effect on cumulative CH4 oxidation rates of soil columns and on CH4 fluxes during the laboratory incubation. L. terrestris significantly increased (P<0.001) cumulative N2O emissions of unlimed soil columns by 57%. The separate incubation of L. terrestris with fresh feces resulted in rather high N2O emissions, but the rate strongly decreased from 54 to 2 μg N kg–1 (dry weight) h–1 during the 100 h of incubation. Liming had a marked effect on N2O formation and significantly (P<0.001) reduced cumulative N2O emissions by 34%. Although the interaction of liming and L. terrestris was not significant, N2O emissions of limed soil columns with L. terrestris were 8% lower than those of the control.

The motion of atoms on interatomic potential energy surfaces is fundamental to the dynamics of liquids and solids. An accelerator-based source of femtosecond x-ray pulses allowed us to follow directly atomic displacements on an optically modified energy landscape, leading eventually to the transition from crystalline solid to disordered liquid. We show that, to first order in time, the dynamics are inertial, and we place constraints on the shape and curvature of the transition-state potential energy surface. Our measurements point toward analogies between this nonequilibrium phase transition and the short-time dynamics intrinsic to equilibrium liquids. 相似文献

At Venus the Energetic Particles Detector (EPD) on the Galileo spacecraft measured the differential energy spectra and angular distributions of ions >22 kiloelectron volts (keV) and electrons > 15 keV in energy. The only time particles were observed by EPD was in a series of episodic events [0546 to 0638 universal time (UT)] near closest approach (0559:03 UT). Angular distributions were highly anisotropic, ordered by the magnetic field, and showed ions arriving from the hemisphere containing Venus and its bow shock. The spectra showed a power law form with intensities observed into the 120- to 280-keV range. Comparisons with model bow shock calculations show that these energetic ions are associated with the venusian foreshock-bow shock region. Shock-drift acceleration in the venusian bow shock seems the most likely process responsible for the observed ions. 相似文献

Sublethal effects of terbuthylazine and carbofuran on the growth and reproduction of Eisenia andrei were investigated over a period of three generations. Reproduction was assessed by measuring the coccon production of worms treated chronically with pesticides. Inhibition of cocoon production was found in the parental generation. Hatchlings were raised from cocoons to provide the F1 generation. During raising a more rapid growth of juveniles treated with terbuthylazine was observed, compared with the growth of untreated worms. The increase in vitality was also found in cocoon production. Groups treated with terbuthylazine produced more cocoons than controls. The F2 generation was raised from hatchlings of the F1 generation, and here, also the terbuthylazine treatments increased earthworm growth, but not cocoon production. Exposure to carbofuran decreased cocoon production in all generations. Growth of the F1 generation was not influenced by low concentrations of carbofuran. 相似文献

A device for the irrigation of soil columns An irrigation device was designed for maintaining a constant water flow in soil columns over a long period of time. The apparatus consists of three construction elements: A balance for the dosage of the water, a sprinkler to distribute the water on the soil surface and an electronic time control to adjust different time steps. The wide range of possible rain intensities is shown. The mean variation of the water pulses and their distribution over the surface are discussed. In a laboratory study, KCI- a neutral salt - equivalent to 300kg K/ha and 272 kg CI/ha was applied to the surface of undisturbed columns of a forest soil (Terra Fusca Rendzina) under steady state unsaturated flow conditions (1.0 cm/day). The effluent of the five soil columns was collected daily, and pH, cation- and anion concentrations were measured. Most of the applied K ions were retained in the top 10cm of the soil and moved in decreasing amounts further down the column. Among the cations studied Ca++, Mg++, and Na+ were lost from the system, K+, NH4, Fe+++, Mn++, H+, and Al+++ were retained. Nitrate and sulfate concentrations in the leachates showed a temporary decrease when CI passed through the columns. This decrease was accompanied with a decrease in pH.
