Wheat plants were allowed to take up [3H]triforine through their roots and were later inoculated with uredospores of the leaf rust of wheat. Precise and direct dating of the Minoan eruption of Santorini (Thera) in Greece, a global Bronze Age time marker, has been made possible by the unique find of an olive tree, buried alive in life position by the tephra (pumice and ashes) on Santorini. We applied so-called radiocarbon wiggle-matching to a carbon-14 sequence of tree-ring segments to constrain the eruption date to the range 1627-1600 B.C. with 95.4% probability. Our result is in the range of previous, less precise, and less direct results of several scientific dating methods, but it is a century earlier than the date derived from traditional Egyptian chronologies. 相似文献

Particles emanating from comet 81P/Wild 2 collided with the Stardust spacecraft at 6.1 kilometers per second, producing hypervelocity impact features on the collector surfaces that were returned to Earth. The morphologies of these surprisingly diverse features were created by particles varying from dense mineral grains to loosely bound, polymineralic aggregates ranging from tens of nanometers to hundreds of micrometers in size. In a 7-week-old calf neurologic symptoms occurred after an accident in the feeding grid. The calf was alert but in left lateral recumbency. After having been placed on its right side it showed a sideward drift to the left. Following head movement, an asynchronous movement of the eyes could be observed. Lesions of the upper motor neuron system, N. vestibulocochlearis, Nn. oculomotorius, trochlearis and/or abducens as well as N. vagus were suspected. Radiological examination of the occipital region and cervical spine revealed an atlanto-occipital subluxation of the atlas. Based on all these findings, the diagnosis of traumatic atlanto-occipital dislocation was made and the calf was euthanized. The pathological findings confirmed this diagnosis. 相似文献

Genomic selection (GS) is a promising alternative to marker‐assisted selection particularly for quantitative traits. In this study, we examined the prediction accuracy of genomic breeding values by using ridge regression best linear unbiased prediction in combination with fivefold cross‐validation based on empirical data of a commercial maize breeding programme. The empirical data is composed of 930 testcross progenies derived from 11 segregating families evaluated at six environments for grain yield and grain moisture. Accuracy to predict genomic breeding values was affected by the choice of the shrinkage parameter λ2, by unbalanced family size, by size of the training population and to a lower extent by the number of markers. Accuracy of genomic breeding values was high suggesting that the selection gain can be improved implementing GS in elite maize breeding programmes. 相似文献

For the selection of donors with valuable characteristics for breeding, 39 thyme accessions were evaluated in three years
according to a staggered schedule. The criteria investigated were: winter hardiness, beginning of flowering, growth height,
yield of the dry herb, content of essential oil, composition of the essential oil, DNA content of cell nuclei and number of
chromosomes. The most strongly varying traits between the populations were the yield of dry herb, the content of essential
oil and the content of volatile phenols with coefficients of variation (CV) between CV 40% and 50%. The largest variation
within a population was detected for the yield of dry herb (CV 25–46%) and the content of essential oil (CV 17–48%). The homogeneity
of the populations was different. The minimal average coefficient of variation of all traits (CV 19%) was determined in the

High molecular weight glutenin subunits (HMW‐GS) from three hexaploid wheat species (AABBDD, 2n=6x=42, Triticum aestivum L., T. spelta L., and T. compactum L.) were separated and identified by acidic capillary electrophoresis (A‐CE) with phosphate‐glycine buffer (pH 2.5) in uncoated fused‐silica capillaries (50 μm, i.d. × 25.5 cm) at 12.5 kV and 40°C. The rapid separations (<15 min) of HMW‐GS with good repeatability (RSD < 2%) were obtained using a fast capillary rising protocol. All 17 HMW‐GS analyzed could be well separated and their relative migration orders were ranked. In particular, the good quality subunit pair 5+10 could be differentiated from poor quality subunit pair 2+12. In addition, the other three allelic pairs of 13+16, 17+18, and 7+8 subunits that were considered to have positive effects on dough properties, as well as three pairs of novel subunits 13+22*, 13*+19*, and 6.1+22.1 detected from spelt and club wheat, can also be readily separated and identified. An additional protein subunit presented in Chinese bread wheat cultivar Jing 411 and club wheat TRI 4445/75, respectively, was detected by both A‐CE and 2‐D gel electrophoresis (A‐PAGE × SDS‐PAGE), for which further identification is needed. 相似文献
