One of the main stumbling blocks in developing rational design strategies for heterogeneous catalysis is that the complexity of the catalysts impairs efforts to characterize their active sites. We show how to identify the crucial atomic structure motif for the industrial Cu/ZnO/Al(2)O(3) methanol synthesis catalyst by using a combination of experimental evidence from bulk, surface-sensitive, and imaging methods collected on real high-performance catalytic systems in combination with density functional theory calculations. The active site consists of Cu steps decorated with Zn atoms, all stabilized by a series of well-defined bulk defects and surface species that need to be present jointly for the system to work.  相似文献

How the widely used botulinum neurotoxin A (BoNT/A) recognizes and enters neurons is poorly understood. We found that BoNT/A enters neurons by binding to the synaptic vesicle protein SV2 (isoforms A, B, and C). Fragments of SV2 that harbor the toxin interaction domain inhibited BoNT/A from binding to neurons. BoNT/A binding to SV2A and SV2B knockout hippocampal neurons was abolished and was restored by expressing SV2A, SV2B, or SV2C. Reduction of SV2 expression in PC12 and Neuro-2a cells also inhibited entry of BoNT/A, which could be restored by expressing SV2 isoforms. Finally, mice that lacked an SV2 isoform (SV2B) displayed reduced sensitivity to BoNT/A. Thus, SV2 acts as the protein receptor for BoNT/A.  相似文献

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Movement behaviour can be influenced by a multitude of biotic and abiotic factors. Here, we investigate the speed of movement in relation to environmental and individual phenotypic properties in subadult common lizards (Lacerta vivipara). We aim to disentangle the importance of substrate, cover, humidity, basking opportunity and individual phenotype on moving tendencies in 12 treatment combinations, at which each lizard was tested. RESULTS: We find that movement behaviour depends on the starting conditions, the physical properties of the dispersal corridor, and on the individuals' phenotype. Specifically, the presence of cover and substrate providing suitable traction in the corridor had positive effects on individual movement decisions. Additionally, we find high phenotypic variation in the propensity to move dependent on the presence of cover. Individual back patterns also strongly affected movement decisions in interaction with the physical properties of the dispersal corridor. CONCLUSIONS: Our results highlight the importance of understanding the habitat resistance for movement patterns, with humid habitats with covering vegetation providing the best conditions to initiate movement in the common lizard. In addition, population effects, differences in back pattern phenotype and individual plasticity were identified as key parameters influencing movement behaviour.  相似文献

Background  

While wild chimpanzees are experiencing drastic population declines, their numbers at African rescue and rehabilitation projects are growing rapidly. Chimpanzees follow complex routes to these refuges; and their geographic origins are often unclear. Identifying areas where hunting occurs can help law enforcement authorities focus scarce resources for wildlife protection planning. Efficiently focusing these resources is particularly important in Cameroon because this country is a key transportation waypoint for international wildlife crime syndicates. Furthermore, Cameroon is home to two chimpanzee subspecies, which makes ascertaining the origins of these chimpanzees important for reintroduction planning and for scientific investigations involving these chimpanzees.  相似文献

Landscape-scale processes (e.g. habitat loss) are major drivers of the global biodiversity crisis, but the complexity and size of landscapes makes study design at this scale difficult. However, the impact of statistical problems associated with sub-optimal study design on inferences drawn from landscape-scale studies is poorly understood. Here, we examine how three common statistical ‘pitfalls’ associated with sub-optimal study design – (1) using landscapes that overlap in space; (2) using only a portion of the potential range of the landscape predictor variable(s) of interest; (3) failing to account for correlations among landscape predictor variables – affect the inferred relationships between the abundances of six species of anurans and the amount of forest in the landscape using a large (n = 1141) empirical dataset from Wisconsin and Michigan, USA. We show that sub-optimal study design alone can be sufficient to cause a switch in the sign of the inferred relationship between a species response and landscape structure, and that using only a portion of the potential range of a predictor variable, and correlations between predictor variables, are particularly likely to affect inferences. Our results also provide the first evidence of a non-monotonic relationship between forest amount and gray treefrog abundance, and suggest that inconsistencies in the literature about the inferred relationships between anuran presence/abundance and forest amount in the Great Lakes basin are likely largely due to sampling design issues. Increased attention to study design is therefore necessary for the development of robust generalizations in landscape ecology.  相似文献

Volatile compounds were extracted by a pentane/ether (1:1) mixture from the leaves of six citrus somatic allotetraploid hybrids resulting from various combinations of lime, lemon, citron, sweet orange, and grapefruit. Extracts were examined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and compared with those of their respective parents. All hybrids having an acid citrus parent exhibit the same relative contents in hydrocarbons and oxygenated compounds as the acid citrus, while the (grapefruit + orange) hybrid behaves similarly to its two parents. When volatile compound contents (microg g(-1)) are examined in detail, several behaviors are encountered in hybrids and seem to depend on the presence/absence of the considered parental compound and on the corresponding hybrid combination. Meanwhile, the sesquiterpene hydrocarbons are present in all hybrids at concentrations systematically lower than those of the highest parental producers. Statistical analyses show that hybrids exhibit hardly discriminable aromatic profiles, meaning that no strong dominance of one or the other parent was observed in hybrids with regards to the leaf volatile compound production.  相似文献

This study evaluated physical properties of selected soil series and their implications on the soil compaction and erosion in Abeokuta, southwestern Nigeria. Daily rainfall data (1999–2007) were collected to estimate the rainfall erosivity. Seven soil series (Iwo, Iseyin, Ekiti, Jago, Okemesi, Apomu, and Egbeda) were sampled from 0–15, 15–30, and 30–50 cm depths for particle size distribution, organic carbon, pH, upper plastic limit, and compactibility (Proctor test). Microtopographical changes along and across toposequences of two farmers’ fields cleared mechanically and manually, respectively, were monitored using the erosion pin method. Mean annual erosivity (EI30) was high (7646 MJ mm ha?1 hr?1). Particle size, organic carbon, and pH were similar (p ≥ 0.05), while upper plastic moisture was ≤?2% among different soil series. Soil-moisture density curves indicated a maximum bulk density of 1.77–1.99 g cm?3 for a moisture range of 7.6–14%; while the soils were prone to compaction at low moisture content. Microtopographic changes were found between –2 and 0 cm and –8 and –2 cm on mechanically and manually cleared farmland, respectively. Spatial dependence showed that the soil erosion could be predicted within 5–8 m distance. To avoid erosion and compaction, soil water content should be less than 7.6% before the introduction of mechanical tillage.  相似文献

Three simple factors ‐ excessive moistening, anaerobic microflora and organic matter, are indispensable and sufficient conditions for gley formation. This process is always characterised by a non‐silicate iron loss from the soil fine earth or soil plasma. Gley formation takes place under conditions of stagnant or stagnant‐percolative water regimes.

In the second case gley formation induces a drastic acidification of the mineral soil part, lessivage, removal of iron, aluminium, calcium, magnesium, bleaching of the soil fine earth, and it appears the features of soil with eluvial, acid, bleached horizons. Therefore soils with such horizons should be regarded as manifestations of gley formation in conditions stagnant ‐percolative water regime on acid, neutral or leached parent material. Under influence of stagnant water regimes Fe of mineral substrat is removed and unconsiderable eluviation of Ca and Mg takes place. pH of parent material does not change or has the trend to increase. In this case does not arise a soil with bleached horizons.  相似文献

A new coaxial line cell for the determination of dielectric spectra of undisturbed soil samples was developed based on a 1.625‐inch ‐ 50 Ω coaxial system. Undisturbed soil samples were collected from a soil profile of the Taunus region (Germany) and capillary saturated followed by a step‐by‐step de‐watering in a pressure plate apparatus as well as oven‐drying at 40°C. The resultant water contents of the soil samples varied from saturation to air‐dry. Permittivity measurements were performed within a frequency range from 1 MHz to 10 GHz with a vector network analyser technique. Complex effective relative permittivity or electrical conductivity was obtained by combining quasi‐analytical and numerical inversion algorithms as well as the parameterizing of measured full set S‐parameters simultaneously under consideration of a generalized fractional dielectric relaxation model (GDR). The measurement of standard materials shows that the technique provides reliable dielectric spectra up to a restricted upper frequency of 5 GHz. For the soil samples investigated, the real part of complex effective relative permittivity ?r,eff and the real part of complex effective electrical conductivity σeff decreased with increasing matric potential or decreasing water contents. Soil texture and porosity affect the dielectric behaviour at frequencies below 1 GHz. For frequencies above 1 GHz minor texture effects were found. The presence of organic matter decreases ?r,eff and σeff. At 1 GHz, the empirical model of Topp et al. (1980) is in close agreement with the experimentally determined real part of the effective permittivity with RMSEs ranging from 1.21 for the basal periglacial slope deposit and 1.29 for bedrock to 3.93 for the upper periglacial slope deposit (Ah). The comparison of the experimental results with a semi‐empirical dielectric mixing model shows that data, especially for the organic‐free soils, tend to be under‐estimated below 1 GHz. The main advantage of the new method compared with conventional impedance and coaxial methods is the preservation of the natural in‐situ structure and properties such as bulk density of the investigated soil samples.  相似文献

Inner core differential motion confirmed by earthquake waveform doublets   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
We analyzed 18 high-quality waveform doublets with time separations of up to 35 years in the South Sandwich Islands region, for which the seismic signals have traversed the inner core as PKP(DF). The doublets show a consistent temporal change of travel times at up to 58 stations in and near Alaska, and they show a dissimilarity of PKP(DF) coda. Using waveform doublets avoids artifacts of earthquake mislocations and contamination from small-scale heterogeneities. Our results confirm that Earth's inner core is rotating faster than the mantle and crust at about 0.3 degrees to 0.5 degrees per year.  相似文献
