To enhance efficiency of breeding programmes for Sclerotinia sclerotiorum resistance in sunflower capitula, two separate resistance tests have been recommended. However, the time necessary to develop
genotypes with two types of resistance makes this impractical. A strategy to combine the two tests was consequently proposed
to reduce the number of seasons per selection cycle, but genetic studies were necessary to determine if it could be applied
in breeding programmes. This was the objective of this work. Data from two genetically different sunflower inbred lines and
their F1, F2 and backcross generations were analysed in two years to determine the genetics of resistance to S. sclerotiorum in capitula measured by application on the same plants of a mycelium test combined with an ascospore test. Effects of maternal
origin were detected when the reciprocal generations were evaluated for the mycelium test. This suggests the importance of
choice of the inbred line used as female in population formation by hybridisation. Progeny subjected to the mycelium test
did not show any change in relative reactions to two S. sclerotiorum isolates suggesting that ranking genotypes according to the results of combined S. sclerotiorum tests is repeatable across Sclerotinia isolates and experimental seasons. Moderate narrow sense heritability indicated that selection of the best F2 plants should
be effective. Genetic gain from selection is possible because a reduction of lesion areas produced by the mycelium test can
be expected. Additive gene effects contribute significantly to reduction in lesion area. Consequences of results in population
improvement for S. sclerotiorum resistance in capitula are discussed.

The disappearance of riboflavin absorbance at 445 nm from beers or model beers on light exposure is directly linked to light-struck character formation. The addition of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, tryptophol, or ascorbic acid was able to reduce, but not stop, absorbance loss or light-struck character formation in either model beer or mainstream lager that was exposed to light. When isohumulone was present in model beer, the inhibitory effect of (+)-catechin, (-)-epicatechin, or tryptophol decreased with increasing isohumulone. The spectrophotometric method used in this study is a simple and effective method for determining light-struck susceptibility. 相似文献

Day‐labor hiring sites are found in more than 120 municipalities across the U.S., there is limited research examining the specific drivers that generate direct interventions into the day‐labor market, nor is there any research examining the effectiveness of day‐labor management policies. In what follows, I draw on examples from the San Diego Metropolitan Area (SDMA) to address this gap in policy‐research. The findings demonstrate the pervasiveness of neoliberal ideology in day‐labor management, from policing strategies to social service provision. In each case examined, local governments only took direct action when they believed day‐labor activity threatened local commercial activity or when residents' fear of “illegal immigrant” day‐laborers made them question the state's ability to control space effectively. In each case, I also evaluate the effectiveness and cost of the management strategy. The results of this analysis clearly demonstrate that attempts to eliminate day‐labor activity are costly and expensive while efforts to formalize day‐labor cost less and have a higher success rate. 相似文献

Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis is a common cause of salmonellosis in people in the UK. This study aimed to assess the degree of genetic diversity among animal and human isolates from UK, Wales and northern Ireland. A total of 250 isolates from humans (n=59) and animals or their environment (n=191), belonging to the most common phage-types, were fingerprinted by a combination of PFGE, PS ribotyping and plasmid profiling. The different techniques identified different degrees of polymorphism (PS ribotyping (52 types)>PFGE (22 types)>plasmid profiling (17 types)). A prevalent genomic clone, as well as a variety of less frequent clones are present for each of the phage-types. In most cases, the prevalent clones appeared within isolates from several animal species and from several geographical locations. The percentage of sporadic clones found in animal and human populations were very similar. There was not clear evidence of a higher degree of diversity for human or animal isolates. Abstract The major pulse crops in India are gram, pigeon pea, black gram, green gram, lentil and peas. Gram, pigeon pea and pea are attacked by several diseases some of which cause considerable crop damage. Gram is affected mainly by wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.ciceri Matuo and Sato), blight (Mycosphaerella pinodes B. and Blox) and rust (Uromyces ciceris-arietinii (Grogn.) Jacz. &; Boy.). The main diseases of pigeon pea are wilt (Fusarium oxysporum f. sp.udum (Butler) Snyd. and Hans.), and sterility mosaic. Powdery mildew (Erysiphe polygoni DC) and rust (Uromyces vicia-fabae (Pers.) Schroet.) are the most important pea diseases. Some diseases of minor importance are described. Details are given of the symptoms, distribution and control of the diseases with particular reference to those of economic importance. Resistance of sunflower inbred lines to various forms of attack by Sclerotinia sclerotiorum and relations with some morphological characters 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Summary Twenty sunflower inbred lines were studied for their reactions to 7 Sclerotinia sclerotiorum tests on different plant parts. A principal component analysis (P.C.A.) and t-tests on the means of resistant and susceptible groups indicated that reactions of inbred lines to infection of capitula by ascospores are independent from those to ascospore infections of terminal buds. They are even more contrasted with the results of any test measuring mycelial extension. However, for the last, there is a close association between the reactions of roots, leaves and capitula. Of the inbred lines, some showed good levels of resistance to most forms of attack, others were generally susceptible and there were some with good resistance to one particular form of attack. A P.C.A. of 18 morphological and field characters showed no general association between these characters and Sclerotinia sclerotiorum test results, although it was found that lines resistant to mycelial extension on capitula were generally earlier than those that were more susceptible. It is proposed that breeding programmes for general resistance to Sclerotinia sclerotiorum should include a combination of two or three tests. 相似文献

Summary The Pl6 locus in the inbred sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.) line HA335 giving resistance to French races of downy mildew (Plasmopara halstedii (Farl.) Berl. & de Toni. was localized by molecular techniques. A bulked segregant analysis was made on the F2 progeny from a cross between this line and H52, a downy mildew susceptible line. The resistance gene in HA335 was found to have the same linked RFLP marker loci as those determined for Pl1 (resistance to race 1 in the line RHA266) on linkage group 1 of the consensus RFLP map of the cultivated sunflower. Pl1 and Pl6 thus appear either to be allelic or closely linked. The implications for sunflower breeding are discussed. 相似文献

The development of the respiratory surfaces was compared in two sympatric, lacustrine morphs of Arctic charr. A macrobenthic invertebrate feeding specialist, that forages in the littoral benthic zone, had a gill cavity that was 54% larger in volume and had 31% greater respiratory surface area than that of a zooplankton feeding morph that forages in the pelagic zone. The large respiratory surface area in the benthic‐feeding form was the result of longer gill arches, more and longer gill filaments and more numerous secondary lamellae. The difference in gill cavity volume and filament length appears to be the result of a larger head, but not body size, in the benthic‐feeding form. This suggests that differences in these characteristics may have arisen as a by‐product of the expression of larger head size commonly described in macrobenthos foraging specialist charr. The other differences, particularly the more numerous secondary lamellae and the length of the gill arches, were not the result of head size differences between morphs, and thus, these are most likely an adaptation to greater respiratory requirements. Benthic‐feeding fish may have a greater respiratory capacity to allow them to forage in areas with lower levels of dissolved oxygen and/or engage in a more active lifestyle compared to the pelagic‐feeding form. In any event, the strikingly larger respiratory surface is likely to impose an additional ionoregulatory stress on the benthic‐feeding and thus may represent a hidden physiological cost of specialisation for foraging on benthic prey. 相似文献

Resistance of sunflowers to terminal bud attack bySclerotinia sclerotiorum was studied by microscopical observations of infection processes and by genetical analyses of trials showing natural infections. Electron microscope studies showed that there were no differences in leaf morphology between susceptible and resistant genotypes, and that both were contaminated by ascospores. Only on the susceptible genotype was considerable ascospore germination observed, followed by mycelial development and leaf penetration. On the resistant genotype, there was little ascosopore germination and no further development. The genetical studies of percentage natural attack observed on eight inbred lines representing a range of reactions, and the hybrids from a factorial cross of these lines, indicated that inheritance is mainly additive, with few interactions. 相似文献
