To establish the prevalence, patterns and risk factors of animal-related injuries among veterinarians, self-administered questionnaires were given to 60 veterinarians practicing in metropolitan Kampala. The prevalence of animal-related injuries in metropolitan Kampala was 72% (95%CI, 57~84). Some veterinarians (34%) suffered multiple injuries with a mean and median of 2.1 and 2.0 injuries per veterinarian, respectively. Of a total of 70 self-reported animal related injuries, cattle accounted for 72%, cats for 25%, dogs for 23%, self inoculation for 15% and birds for 13%. Injuries associated with poultry did not require hospital treatment. The upper limb was the most the frequently (68%) injured anatomical body part of veterinarians, and vaccination of animals (25%) was the major activity associated with injury. Animal-related injuries are common among practicing veterinarians in metropolitan Kampala; however, they did not differ significantly based on the veterinarian''s gender, experience or risk awareness.  相似文献

A nondestructive analytical method based on NMR spectroscopy was developed for the determination of phospholipids in olive oil. The phospholipids extracted from virgin olive oil with a mixture of ethanol/water (2:1 v/v) were identified and quantified by high resolution (31)P NMR spectroscopy. The main phospholipids found in olive oil were phosphatidic acid, lyso-phosphatidic acid, and phosphatidylinositol. Validation of the (31)P NMR methodology for quantitative analysis of phospholipids in olive oil was performed. Sensitivity was satisfactory with detection limits of 0.25-1.24 mumol /mL. In addition, the composition of fatty acids in phospholipids model compounds and those in olive oil samples was estimated by employing one- and two-dimensional (1)H NMR. The results indicated that the fatty acid composition in phospholipids and triacylglycerols of olive oil was similar.  相似文献

In many coarse textured soils, limited root development and biomass production are attributed to adverse physical conditions in the subsoil. The current study was undertaken on an Arenic Acrisol located in Northeast Thailand (i) to assess whether subsoil physical characteristics influence crop rooting depth, and (ii) to compare the benefits associated with conventional tillage with that of localised subsoil loosening on crop performance and selected soil attributes. Control plots consisted of disk ploughing; the implemented treatments were conventional deep-ripping and localised slotting below the planting line. A crop rotation consisting of a legume followed by maize was established annually to assess the impact of these treatments on crop performance. In the control treatment, root development was restricted to the topsoil (0–20 cm) due to high subsoil bulk density (>1.6 Mg m−3). After deep-ripping, no improvement was observed in bulk density, rooting depth and in crop performance. The implementation of a slotting treatment systematically improved root development in the slotted subsoil, root impact frequency increasing from <0.2 to 0.6–0.8 (P = 0.01) despite no change in the bulk densities of the subsoil. This systematic improvement in root development could be explained by (i) reduced slumping that enable root development prior to recompaction and/or (ii) preferential drainage in the slot and therefore decreased resistance to root penetration. In a dry year maize yield was improved by 78% (P = 0.01); the deep-rooting legume Stylosanthes was tested only a wet year and its biomass production increased by >40% (P = 0.03). This study highlights the detrimental impact of subsoil compaction on root development and the potential role of slotting in coarse textured soils as a long-term management tool in addressing adverse subsoil physical characteristics that limit deep-rooting.  相似文献

Development of planting materials through vegetative propagation has been difficult in some timber species due to ontogenetic aging which slows down rooting of stem cuttings. Applying grafting techniques helped produce quality planting materials with unique characters, as these techniques influenced union establishment and successful growth of the grafted plants. This study assessed effects of different grafting techniques on establishment and early growth of four African mahogany species (Khaya ivorensis, K. anthotheca, K. grandifoliola and K. senegalensis) using 2-year old seedling rootstocks and scions from mature trees with desirable stem form. We assessed effects of three grafting methods (top-cleft, side grafting, and whip and tongue), and scion type on growth performance of the African mahogany species at 6 months after grafting. K. grandifoliola scion grafted onto K. grandifoliola rootstock recorded highest mean graft success (81.67%), number of leaves formed (11.6) and shoot height growth (7.47 cm) in the top-cleft method. The whip and tongue method was least successful among the three methods. Homografted plants had greatest influence on the grafting parameters for highest mean successes in K. grandifoliola/K. grandifoliola (81.67%), K. anthotheca/K. anthotheca (73.33%) and K. senegalensis/K. senegalensis (63.33%) except K. ivorensis scion type which occurred in the heterograft K. grandifoliola/K. ivorensis (76.67%). Highest performance of the top-cleft method is attributed to good contact between cambia of the grafted species and thus their easy union and growth. Grafting of the four African mahogany species is most successful using top-cleft grafting technique for sustainable production of improved cultivars for restoration and conservation.

Identifying rates of change in the abundance of sea cucumbers under differing management regimes is fundamental to estimating commercial yields, identifying ecological interactions and facilitating management. Here, we review the status of sea cucumber stocks from a range of Pacific Island countries (Samoa, Tonga, Palau, Fiji and Papua New Guinea), some of which have had a moratorium on exports for up to a decade. We use a time‐series approach to look at variation in sea cucumber presence, coverage and density from survey and re‐survey data. Results give an appreciation of variation between ‘high’ status (less impacted) and depleted stocks. Survey data show marked declines in coverage and abundance as a result of artisanal fishing activity, and although species groups were not lost at a country level, local extirpation and range restriction was noted. Resilience and ‘recovery’ following cessation of fishing varied greatly, both among locations and among the species targeted. Worryingly, even after extended periods of moratorium, the density of some species was markedly low. In many cases, the densities were too low for commercial fishing, and may be at a level where the effective population size is constrained due to ‘Allee’ affects. From these results, we suggest that management regimes presently employed are generally not well aligned with the level of response to fishing mortality that can be expected from sea cucumber stocks. New adaptive, precautionary approaches to management are suggested, which would allow more timely interventions to be made, while refined information on stock dynamics is sought.  相似文献

In the current paper, we fabricated, characterized, and applied nanocomposite hydrogel based on alginate (Alg) and nano-hydroxyapatite (nHA) loaded with phenolic purified extracts from the aerial part of Linum usitatissimum (LOH) as the bone tissue engineering scaffold. nHA was synthesized based on the wet chemical technique/precipitation reaction and incorporated into Alg hydrogel as the filler via physical cross-linking. The characterizations (SEM, DLS, and Zeta potential) revealed that the synthesized nHA possess a plate-like shape with nanometric dimensions. The fabricated nanocomposite has a porous architecture with interconnected pores. The average pore size was in the range of 100–200 µm and the porosity range of 80–90%. The LOH release measurement showed that about 90% of the loaded drug was released within 12 h followed by a sustained release over 48 h. The in vitro assessments showed that the nanocomposite possesses significant antioxidant activity promoting bone regeneration. The hemolysis induction measurement showed that the nanocomposites were hemocompatible with negligible hemolysis induction. The cell viability/proliferation confirmed the biocompatibility of the nanocomposites, which induced proliferative effects in a dose-dependent manner. This study revealed the fabricated nanocomposites are bioactive and osteoactive applicable for bone tissue engineering applications.  相似文献

Cleome gynandra (L.) Briq. is an African leafy vegetable with a potential to improve food security and micronutrient deficiencies. Cytological traits, breeding biology and genetic diversity of 30 selected entries of C. gynandra from six African countries were investigated. The entries consisted of advanced lines, gene bank accessions and farmers’ cultivars. Our study revealed chromosome numbers of 2n = 34 in root tip metaphase cells from one entry. The 30 entries were found to be diploid with genome sizes ranging from 2.31 to 2.45 pg/2C. Hand pollination experiments were carried out to assess self‐incompatibility within the entries and revealed that they are self‐ and cross‐compatible. For genetic diversity studies within and among the entries, the pooled data of 499 polymorphic bands from 11 amplified fragment length polymorphism primer combinations and nine simple sequence repeat markers were used. The genetic distance among the entries ranged from 0.13 to 0.77. In a principal coordinate analysis, the farmers’ cultivars formed a cluster separate from the advanced lines and the gene bank entries, and the latter were not well resolved.  相似文献

Background

Plant root systems play a major role in anchoring and in water and nutrient uptake from the soil. The root cone angle is an important parameter of the root system architecture because, combined with root depth, it helps to determine the volume of soil explored by the plant. Two genes, DRO1 and SOR1, and several QTLs for root cone angle have been discovered in the last 5 years.

Results

To find other QTLs linked to root cone angle, a genome-wide association mapping study was conducted on two panels of 162 indica and 169 japonica rice accessions genotyped with two sets of SNP markers (genotyping-by-sequencing set with approximately 16,000 markers and high-density-rice-array set with approximately 300,000 markers). The root cone angle of all accessions was measured using a screen protractor on images taken after 1 month of plant growth in the Rhizoscope phenotyping system. The distribution of the root cone angle in the indica panel was Gaussian, but several accessions of the japonica panel (all the bulus from Indonesia and three temperate japonicas from Nepal or India) appeared as outliers with a very wide root cone angle. The data were submitted to association mapping using a mixed model with control of structure and kinship. A total of 15 QTLs for the indica panel and 40 QTLs for the japonica panel were detected. Genes underlying these QTLs (+/?50 kb from the significant markers) were analyzed. We focused our analysis on auxin-related genes, kinases, and genes involved in root developmental processes and identified 8 particularly interesting genes.

Conclusions

The present study identifies new sources of wide root cone angle in rice, proposes ways to bypass some drawbacks of association mapping to further understand the genetics of the trait and identifies candidate genes deserving further investigation.

Maize has been targeted as one of the major crops for provitamin enrichment and delivery because it is an inexpensive and easily available source of food for millions of people in sub-Saharan Africa. Although tropical-adapted yellow maize contains provitamin-A carotenoids that can be converted into vitamin A in the human body, they represent less than 25% of the total carotenoids in most widely grown and consumed maize cultivars in Africa. Novel genes conditioning high concentration of β-carotene and other carotenoids were then continually introduced from the temperate zone and tropics to boost provitamin A in tropical-adapted maize. Several promising inbred lines developed from backcrosses involving diverse exotic donor lines displayed provitamin A concentrations that match or surpass the current breeding target of 15 μg g?1. Some of these lines attained high provitamin A content by accumulating mainly high β-carotene while others contained high provitamin A by promoting accumulation of high levels of both carotenes and xanthophylls. Several inbred lines with intermediate to high levels of provitamin A have already been used to develop hybrids and synthetics without compromising grain yield and other adaptive traits that are required to profitably cultivate maize by farmers in West and Central Africa.  相似文献

Striga is an important parasitic weed causing substantial economic losses in cereal and legume crop production in sub-Saharan Africa. Integrated Striga management approaches such as a combined use of Striga resistant varieties and Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. strigae (FOS), a biocontrol agent of Striga, are an option to control the parasite and to boost sorghum productivity. Understanding host gene action influencing Striga resistance, with or without FOS treatment, is key to developing improved sorghum varieties with durable resistance and high yield. The objective of this study was to determine the gene action and inheritance of Striga resistance using genetically diverse populations of sorghum involving FOS treatment. Twelve sorghum parents selected for Striga resistance, FOS compatibility or superior agronomic performances were crossed using a bi-parental mating scheme. The selected male and female parents and their F1 progenies, backcross derivatives and the F2 segregants were field evaluated at three locations in Tanzania known for their severe Striga infestations using a lattice experimental design with two replications. The following data were collected and subjected to generation mean analysis (GMA): days-to-50% flowering (DFL), seed yield per plant (SYP) and number of Striga per plant (SN). GMA showed the preponderance of additive genetic action contributing to the total genetic variation in the evaluated sorghum populations. The additive genetic effect for DFL, SYP and SN, with and without FOS treatments, ranged from 72.02 to 86.65% and 41.49 to 95.44%, 75.62 to 91.42% and 71.83 to 91.89%, and 77.35 to 93.56% and 72.86 to 95.84%, in that order. The contribution of non-additive genetic effects was minimal and varied among generations. FOS application reduced DFL and SN and improved SYP in most of the tested sorghum populations. DFL of sorghum populations was reduced by a mean of 8 days under FOS treatment compared to the untreated control in families such as 675 × 654, AS435 × AS426 and 1563 × AS436. FOS treatment improved SYP with a mean of 6.44 g plant?1 in 3424 × 3993 and 3984 × 672. The numbers of Striga plants were reduced with a mean of 16 plants due to FOS treatment in the crosses of 675 × 654, 1563 × AS436, 4567 × AS424, and 3984 × 672. The study demonstrated that additive genes were predominantly responsible for the inheritance of Striga resistance in sorghum. Pure line cultivar development targeting reduced DFL, SN and high SYP in the selected populations may provide enhanced response to selection for integrated Striga management (ISM) programme.  相似文献
