Objectives

We examined canopy gap structure and regeneration patterns at the landscape scale using a combination of remote sensing and field-based surveys.

Methods

The study was carried out in the forest reserve of Lom, an old-growth Fagus-Abies-Picea forest located within the Dinaric Alps in the north-western part of Bosnia and Herzegovina. A high-resolution (1-m panchromatic and 4-m multispectral) Kompsat-2 satellite image was orthorectified and classified through an unsupervised pixel-based classification using an artificial neural network method.

Results

This approach allowed the identification of 650 canopy gaps, ranging in size from 32 to 1,776?m2. Only 20 intermediate to large gaps (>250?m2) were identified, and they were mainly present near the perimeter of the reserve. The origin of these large openings was associated with past human-caused disturbances or topographic conditions. The species composition of regeneration within large, human-caused gaps differed markedly from small gaps and non-gap sites in the core area of the reserve. Shade-intolerant species dominated the seedling and sapling layers in large openings. The landscape approach employed in this study confirmed the hypothesis that small gaps predominate at Lom, especially within the core area of the reserve.  相似文献

Pearling by‐products and the pearled products of two commercial stocks of hulled barley, pearled according to an industrial process consisting of five consecutive pearling steps, were analyzed for β‐glucans, dietary fiber (total, soluble, and insoluble), protein, lipid, ash, and digestible carbohydrate. The data showed that the pearling flour fractions, abraded in the fourth and fifth hullers, contained interesting amounts of β‐glucans (3.9–5.1% db) from a nutritional point of view. These fractions were subsequently enriched in β‐glucans using a milling‐sieving process to double β‐glucan content (9.1–10.5% db). Functional pastas, enriched with β‐glucans and dietary fiber, were produced by substituting 50% of standard durum wheat semolina with β‐glucan‐enriched barley flour fractions. Although darker than durum wheat pasta, these pastas had good cooking qualities with regard to stickiness, bulkiness, firmness, and total organic matter released in rinsing water. The dietary fiber (13.1–16.1% wb) and β‐glucan (4.3–5.0% wb) contents in the barley pastas were much higher than in the control (4.0 and 0.3% wb, respectively). These values amply meet the FDA requirements of 5 g of dietary fiber and 0.75 g of β‐glucans per serving (56 g in the United States and 80 g in Italy). At present, the FDA has authorized the health claim “may reduce the risk of heart disease” for food containing β‐glucans from oat and psyllium only.  相似文献

The breadmaking potential of six oat varieties was compared with and related to their physicochemical properties. The most significant differences in the bread characteristics were found in the crumb structure. The varieties Buggy, Energie, and Zorro resulted in good bread quality with an even gas‐cell distribution characterized by a high number of relatively small pores. In contrast, Typhon, Ivory, and Nord 08/311 each had a large hole in the center of the crumb and accordingly poor quality. Breads differed little in specific volume, bake loss, and density. Rheological analysis revealed positive effects of low batter resistance to deformation on oat bread quality. On the basis of the physicochemical characterization, protein and fat contents were identified as key factors responsible for differences observed in bread quality, provided that starch damage and water‐hydration capacity were low. Additionally, high setback and final viscosity, as determined by Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) analysis, positively affected oat bread quality. High α‐amylase activity was found to influence negatively the breadmaking performance of oats. Overall, protein, fat, dietary fiber content, starch pasting properties, and α‐amylase activity were responsible for the breadmaking properties of oat varieties.  相似文献

The susceptibility of sheep to scrapie is under the control of the host’s prion protein (PrP) gene and is also influenced by the strain of the agent. PrP polymorphisms at codons 136 (A/V), 154 (R/H) and 171 (Q/R/H) are the main determinants of susceptibility/resistance of sheep to classical scrapie. They are combined in four main variants of the wild-type ARQ allele: VRQ, AHQ, ARH and ARR. Breeding programmes have been undertaken on this basis in the European Union and the USA to increase the frequency of the resistant ARR allele in sheep populations. Herein, we report the results of a multi-flock study showing the protective effect of polymorphisms other than those at codons 136, 154 and 171 in Sarda breed sheep. All ARQ/ARQ affected sheep (n = 154) and 378 negative ARQ/ARQ controls from four scrapie outbreaks were submitted to sequencing of the PrP gene. The distribution of variations other than those at the standard three codons, between scrapie cases and negative controls, was statistically different in all flocks. In particular, the AT137RQ and ARQK176 alleles showed a clear protective effect. This is the first study demonstrating a protective influence of alleles other than ARR under field conditions. If further investigations in other sheep breeds and with other scrapie sources confirm these findings, the availability of various protective alleles in breeding programmes of sheep for scrapie resistance could be useful in breeds with a low frequency of the ARR allele and would allow maintaining a wider variability of the PrP gene.  相似文献

Healthy horses and other animals have large numbers of resident leukocytes in the intestinal wall, but there is scant information regarding which and how many leukocytes are normally present in the equine intestinal wall. Our aim was to provide a reference range of leukocytes in the intestinal mucosal and submucosal propria of normal horses. We included in our study intestinal tissues from 22 Thoroughbred racehorses with no clinical intestinal disease, which had been euthanized because of catastrophic musculoskeletal injuries. Neutrophils, lymphocytes, eosinophils, macrophages, and plasma cells were counted in 5 random 17,600-µm2 areas of villus lamina propria of the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum, and deep lamina propria of the duodenum, jejunum, ileum, right ventral colon, left ventral colon, left dorsal colon, right dorsal colon, and small colon. Other features investigated in the same intestinal segments included villus height and width (small intestine), presence of ciliated protozoa, Paneth cells number, subcryptal leukocyte layers (number of leukocyte layers between the bottom of the crypts and the muscularis mucosae), and submucosal leukocytes. Lymphocytes were the most numerous cells in all segments analyzed, followed by plasma cells, eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils. Eosinophil numbers were significantly higher in both lamina propria and submucosa of the large intestine than in the small intestine. The duodenum had shorter and thinner villi than either jejunum or ileum. The data provided from our study will be useful for diagnosticians examining inflammatory processes in the intestinal tract of horses.  相似文献

Increasing air temperature due to changing climate is projected to decrease the length of the growing season, hasten vegetative development and maturation, and ultimately affect yield of many C3 crops. Previous multilocation trials highlighted strong relationships between thermal trends in the interval “beginning of flowering‐end of grain filling” and grain yield, and protein content in durum wheat (Triticum turgidum subsp. durum (Desf.) Husn.). With the aim to confirm these relationships, nine durum wheat genotypes, including old (Capeiti 8, Senatore Cappelli and Trinakria) and modern (Amedeo, Arcangelo, Mongibello, Simeto, and Svevo) varieties and a Sicilian landrace (Russello) were grown at three different sites representing a climate gradient in Sicily, Italy. Moreover, the effect of post‐anthesis heat stress on these durum wheats was further investigated in two contrasting environments: open‐field (control—C) and greenhouse heat stress (HS). HS shortened the interval “beginning‐end of flowering” of 1.5 days across genotypes, and the “end of flowering‐beginning of grain filling” and maturation of 4.9 days, with a range of 1 day in Arcangelo to 11 days in Cappelli. Advances in main phenophases significantly decreased kernel weight (KW) and grain yield (GY), whereas grain protein content (PC) increased. As expected, a negative relationship was observed between GY and PC, while positive relationships were found for GY and grain‐filling duration (GFD), and GY and KW. Genotypes responded differently to heat stress, as evidenced by the net photosynthesis, transpiration rate, instantaneous water use efficiency and dry matter accumulation in kernels. Genotypes were ranked according to the heat susceptibility index (HSI): Amedeo, Arcangelo, Capeiti 8, Svevo and Trinakria resulted heat‐tolerant. These varieties were characterized by an early trigger of dry matter accumulation in kernels under HS (Amedeo, Arcangelo and Trinakria), or showed similar length of the GFD (Capeiti 8) between environments. The multilocation trial confirmed a negative relationship between maximum temperatures and grain yield, and a positive relationship between minimum temperatures and protein content during grain–filling periods. Research focusing on agronomic strategies, phenology and breeding for tolerance to heat stress is of strategic importance to cope with the detrimental effect of global warming in semi‐arid climates.  相似文献

Pre-plant P as superphosphate (8.7% P) at the rate of 1.5 kg m?3 was added to two root media in 16.5-cm azalea-type pots. Saturated media were periodically leached to 15% excess. Media type had a definite influence on P leached. Over one third of the total applied P was leached from a peat moss:vermiculite (PV) (1:1, v:v) mix after 9 weeks compared to less than 5% leached from a sand:soil:peat moss (SSP) (1:1:1, v:v:v) mix in a simulated plant watering scheme. Approximately the same amount of P was leached at any given watering in the PV (4.2%), whereas 2.6% of that applied was lost after an initial watering at 1 h and only 0.04% after an initial watering at 9 weeks in the SSP mix. This difference was related to differences in P fixation by the various root media components.P adsorption isotherms were conducted on 7 root media components or mixtures of components, including the 2 above-mentioned mixes, to determine the quantity of P adsorbed to give 0.2 ppm in the soil solution. The resulting plot of P adsorbed versus P in solution confirmed that the greater leaching loss of P in the soil-less mix was due to a lower P adsorption capacity. Maximum P adsorption capacity in the soilless media was reached with the addition of 262 g P m?3. The adsorption capacities of soil, sand and SSP were not reached at the highest rate of P addition (524 g P m?3. The higher P buffering capacity of these materials necessitates greater P addition to achieve 0.2 ppm soluble P, considered optimum for most plants, but ensures that the level of soluble P will be maintained for a longer period.  相似文献
