In a study involving 7,477 pregnant cows (5,426 Holstein-Friesians and 2,051 Guernseys), each pregnancy was diagnosed by rectal palpation, using the membrane slip technique. Each cow was examined twice, first by a veterinary student, then by a clinician. Of the cows diagnosed pregnant, 7,058 (94.4%) calved. The embryonic death rate in cows examined during the first 50 days of gestation was significantly (P less than 0.001) greater than that associated with examinations after 50 days of gestation. A significant difference was found between herds in different years (P less than 0.05). There was no conclusive indication that embryonic loss at the time of or shortly after early examination was iatrogenic abortion resulting from the membrane slip technique.  相似文献

The relationship between acrylamide and its precursors, namely, free asparagine and reducing sugars, was studied in cakes made from potato flake, wholemeal wheat, and wholemeal rye, cooked at 180 degrees C, from 5 to 60 min. Between 5 and 20 min, major losses of asparagine, water, and total reducing sugars were accompanied by large increases in acrylamide, which maximized in all three products between 25 and 30 min, followed by a slow linear reduction. Acrylamide formation did not occur to a large degree until the moisture contents of the cakes fell below 5%. Linear relationships were observed for acrylamide formation with the residual levels of asparagine and reducing sugars for all three food materials.  相似文献

2-Alkyl-(2H)-thiapyrans and 2-alkylthiophenes have been identified in the volatiles of cooked beef and lamb. The quantities of both groups of compounds were higher in the meat of animals fed lipid supplements high in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. 2-Alkyl-(2H)-thiapyrans were formed when (E,E)-2,4-dienals (C(6)-C(11)) and hydrogen sulfide were heated at 140 degrees C for 30 min. This confirmed their proposed route of formation in cooked meat from lipid-derived aldehydes and hydrogen sulfide; the latter was produced from the degradation of cysteine, via the Maillard reaction. The mass spectra and NMR spectra of these thiapyrans are reported for the first time. Although 2-alkyl-(2H)-thiapyrans were found to have only low odor potency, the reactions by which they are formed may have important implications for meat flavor. These reactions may remove potent aroma compounds and their intermediates from meat, thus modifying the overall aroma profile.  相似文献

The recently developed direct counting technique for radiocarbon atoms has been used to measure the relative numbers of such atoms in various geological samples which had earlier been dated by the beta-ray counting method. Sample weights ranged from 3.5 to 15 milligrams. The dates determined by the two methods are consistent with each other. Further experience with the new method is also reported.  相似文献

A review of agronomic and genetic approaches as strategies for the mitigation of acrylamide risk in wheat and potato is presented. Acrylamide is formed through the Maillard reaction during high-temperature cooking, such as frying, roasting, or baking, and the main precursors are free asparagine and reducing sugars. In wheat flour, acrylamide formation is determined by asparagine levels and asparagine accumulation increases dramatically in response to sulfur deprivation and, to a much lesser extent, with nitrogen feeding. In potatoes, in which sugar concentrations are much lower, the relationships between acrylamide and its precursors are more complex. Much attention has been focused on reducing the levels of sugars in potatoes as a means of reducing acrylamide risk. However, the level of asparagine as a proportion of the total free amino acid pool has been shown to be a key parameter, indicating that when sugar levels are limiting, competition between asparagine and the other amino acids for participation in the Maillard reaction determines acrylamide formation. Genetic approaches to reducing acrylamide risk include the identification of cultivars and other germplasm in which free asparagine and/or sugar levels are low and the manipulation of genes involved in sugar and amino acid metabolism and signaling. These approaches are made more difficult by genotype/environment interactions that can result in a genotype being "good" in one environment but "poor" in another. Another important consideration is the effect that any change could have on flavor in the cooked product. Nevertheless, as both wheat and potato are regarded as of relatively high acrylamide risk compared with, for example, maize and rice, it is essential that changes are achieved that mitigate the problem.  相似文献

Fifteen pony mares were assigned to 1 of 3 treatment groups after foaling: Group 1, 35 ml of sterile saline solution was infused into the uterine lumen within 24 hours after parturition (6 mares); group 2, 300 mg of Escherichia coli endotoxin was infused into the uterine lumen within 24 hours after parturition (6 mares); and group 3, 300 mg of E coli endotoxin was infused into the uterine lumen between 72 and 96 hours after parturition (3 mares). Rectal temperatures were taken at -1, -0.5, 0, 0.5, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 5 hours after treatment. Venous blood samples were also taken at these times for routine WBC counts. Data were analyzed as a repeated measurement design with linear and quadratic orthogonal contrasts performed where significant time and interaction with time occurred. Pretreatment averages of total WBC and neutrophil counts were compared with their nadir posttreatment averages by a t test when treatment-by-time interaction was significant for the parameter. Rectal temperature (37.9 +/- 0.1 C) remained stable and did not vary among treatment groups after intrauterine infusions. In contrast, total WBC and neutrophil counts did vary among treatment groups across time. However, for treatment groups 1 and 3, neither blood total WBC count nor neutrophil count after intrauterine infusions was different from pretreatment observations. In group 2, total WBC count decreased (P less than 0.10) from a pretreatment average of 11.5 +/- 0.4 X 10(3) cells/mm3 to a nadir concentration of 10.0 +/- 0.6 X 10(3) cells/mm3 by 60 minutes after infusion of endotoxin into the uterus.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

The mechanism of resistance to quinclorac was investigated in a smooth crabgrass biotype [Digitaria ischaemum (Schreb. ex Schweig) Schreb. ex Muhl] from Tulare County, California. Quinclorac (8.96 kg a.i. ha−1) had no effect (P = 0.18) on the resistant (R) biotype, but reduced fresh weight of a susceptible (S) biotype by 93%. After treatment with 4.48 kg a.i. quinclorac ha−1, the S biotype produced about three times more ethylene than the R biotype and accumulated cyanide in tissues. Similar amounts of endogenous cyanide resulting from treatment with KCN reproduced quinclorac phytotoxicity. Pre-treatment with the ACC synthase inhibitor AVG reduced quinclorac phytotoxicity by 37% and ethylene production by 89%. These data suggest a target site-based mechanism of resistance involving stimulation of ACC synthesis and accumulation of cyanide. Also, the R biotype had four times more β-cyanoalanine synthase activity than the S biotype, suggesting a higher ability to detoxify cyanide.  相似文献
