The response of earthworms to soil application of boardmill waste sludge was quantified in field and laboratory experiments. The influence of one application of 6×104 tonnes ha−1 of unamended sludge was tested against no application on silty-clay arable soil. After 2 years, results in stubble-cultivated soil showed a 1.7 times lower density of earthworms where sludge was added, whereas there was no difference in average earthworm fresh weight. In direct-drilled soil, there was an indication of lower average numbers of Lumbricus terrestris middens when sludge was applied. Negative impacts in the field may have been due to indirect negative effects of the sludge application. In the laboratory, habitat choice tests were undertaken with two common species from the field site using sludge-based mulch and fertiliser products. Aporrectodea caliginosa showed no discernible preference between soil and soil mixed with unamended sludge (mulch), but favoured soil over soil mixed with sludge and chicken manure (fertiliser). Tests with L. terrestris showed a similar pattern. The preference of L. terrestris for the two products was compared with that for chopped barley straw by direct observation of foraging behaviour. Differences in foraging time of L. terrestris for different feeds were not significant, but mass of straw collected was significantly greater compared with either type of sludge treatment.  相似文献

This study evaluated the effect of 1% bifonazole cream in the treatment of canine sino-nasal aspergillosis (SNA). The cream was instilled through perendoscopically placed catheters into the frontal sinuses and was used either as single therapy after debridement (DC) or as adjunctive therapy after 2% enilconazole infusion (DEC). Twelve dogs were treated initially with DEC: 7 and 3 of these dogs were free of disease after 1 and 2 procedures, respectively, while 2 dogs were cured after DC was used as a second procedure. Five dogs were treated with DC only: in 3 dogs with moderate disease, cure was obtained after a single procedure while, in 2 debilitated patients, cure could not be confirmed. Topical administration of 1% bifonazole cream appears as an effective therapy in SNA, either as an adjunctive therapy to enilconazole infusion or as sole therapy in moderately affected patients.  相似文献

Understanding soil organic carbon (SOC) responses to land-use changes requires knowledge of the sizes and mean residence times (MRT) of specific identifiable SOC pools over a range of decomposability. We examined pool sizes and kinetics of active and slow pool carbon (C) for tropical forest and grassland ecosystems on Barro Colorado Island, Panama, using long-term incubations (180 days) of soil and stable C isotopes. Chemical fractionation (acid hydrolysis) was applied to assess the magnitude of non-hydrolysable pool C (NHC). Incubation revealed that both grassland and forest soil contained a small proportion of active pool C (<1%), with MRT of ~6 days. Forest and grassland soil apparently did not differ considerably with respect to their labile pool substrate quality. The MRT of slow pool C in the upper soil layer (0–10 cm) did not differ between forest and grassland, and was approximately 15 years. In contrast, changes in vegetation cover resulted in significantly shorter MRT of slow pool C under grassland (29 years) as compared to forest (53 years) in the subsoil (30–40 cm). The faster slow pool turnover rate is probably associated with a loss of 30% total C in grassland subsoil compared to the forest. The NHC expressed as a percentage of total C varied between 54% and 64% in the surface soil and decreased with depth to ~30%. Grassland NHC had considerably longer MRTs (120 to 320 years) as compared to slow pool C. Hurricane disturbance has the potential to markedly affect coastal forest structure and ecosystem processes. This study focused on the impacts of Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana's Pearl River basin, which lies just west of Katrina's final landfall at the Louisiana–Mississippi border. Prior to landfall, composition and structure of bottomland hardwood forests in this region were studied with permanent forest inventory plots sampled in 1989, 1998, 2005 and following the storm in 2006. This enabled a direct comparison of forest structure and dynamics before and after the disturbance, including species-specific tree mortality and damage rates, biomass production, and differences among forest types having varied hydrologic regimes. Background tree mortality rate before Hurricane Katrina was 1.9%, while average annual mortality was 20.5% for the census interval including the disturbance. Change in live tree biomass estimated from allometric models demonstrated a shift from an average annual production of 3.5 Mg ha−1 before the disturbance, to an average loss of 77.6 Mg ha−1 from the storm. Damage associated with Hurricane Katrina varied significantly with tree species but not tree size. Flooded cypress-tupelo swamp forests sustained the least damage and frequently flooded bottomland hardwood forests sustained the highest damage. Hurricane disturbance influenced the structure and composition of these coastal forests through species-specific differences in damage and mortality rates, and varied impacts dependent on forest flooding regime.  相似文献

Hurricane Katrina's impact on U.S. Gulf Coast forests was quantified by linking ecological field studies, Landsat and Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) image analyses, and empirically based models. Within areas affected by relatively constant wind speed, tree mortality and damage exhibited strong species-controlled gradients. Spatially explicit forest disturbance maps coupled with extrapolation models predicted mortality and severe structural damage to approximately 320 million large trees totaling 105 teragrams of carbon, representing 50 to 140% of the net annual U.S. forest tree carbon sink. Changes in disturbance regimes from increased storm activity expected under a warming climate will reduce forest biomass stocks, increase ecosystem respiration, and may represent an important positive feedback mechanism to elevated atmospheric carbon dioxide.  相似文献

This study was performed to evaluate the ability of white-rot fungi to decolorize dye effluents. A total of 222 isolates of white-rot fungi were initially investigated to assess their ability to decolorize chemically different synthetic dyes in solid medium, resulting in selection of 25 isolates including four isolates of Berkandera adusta, five isolates of Ceriporia lacerata, three isolates of Irpex lacteus, one isolate of Perenniporia fraxinea, ten isolates of Phanerochaete spp., one isolate of Phlebia radiata, and one isolate of Porostereum spadiceum. Of the 25 isolates, B. adusta KUC9065, C. lacerata KUC8090, P. calotricha KUC8003, and P. spadiceum KUC8602 were finally selected on the basis of their ability to decolorize synthetic dyes in liquid medium, and were used to decolorize industrial effluents. B. adusta KUC9065 increased the transmittance of visible light by 71–92 %. Decolorization of wastewater by B. adusta KUC9065 was probably caused by the lignin-modifying enzymes produced by the fungus. In addition, the acute toxicity to Daphnia magna decreased from 2.5 to 2.1 and from 3.5 to 2.6 toxic units over 24 and 48 h, respectively.  相似文献
