The urbanizing forested landscape in the United States is creating challenges for resource managers and land-use planners. Logistic regression models developed to assess urbanization's effect on forestland for the mid-Atlantic and southern states found that population density was the best predictor of reduced commercial harvest opportunity. We applied similar methodologies in central New York to assess urbanization's impact on sustained yield management. We surveyed professional foresters in a five-county area and asked them to rate the potential for sustained yield management by township. We utilized those expert opinions to develop a logistic regression model that predicted the probability of sustained yield management in central New York while exploring the factors that influence sustained yield management. We found that road density was the primary variable influencing the likelihood of sustained yield management in central New York. Population density, which is highly correlated with road density, also proved to be a strong determinant of sustained yield management. The results suggest that the potential for sustained yield management approaches 10% at a road density of 3 mi/mi2, 50% at 2.5 mi/mi2, and 90% at 2 mi/mi2. The corresponding figures for population density were 150 people per square mile (ppsm), 75 ppsm and 25 ppsm, respectively. In addition, we determined that the probability of sustained yield management approaches 100% for a property that is approximately 30 acres and drops to 50% for a parcel that is between 15 and 20 acres. This study provides resource managers and land-use planners a guide in which to effectively gauge the cumulative effect of urbanization on the forest resource in central New York. Unlike other regions of the United States, central New York's growth pattern is characterized by stagnant population growth (declining in some places) combined with continued urbanization and low-density sprawl. Because growth patterns vary regionally, different indicators may be needed to accurately assess the urbanizing forested landscape across the United States.  相似文献

A traumatic pneumothorax and severe hemorrhage were present in a mare with a large thoracic wall defect, lung perforation, and multiple rib fractures. General anesthesia was induced to allow surgical exploration. OBJECTIVE: To study the effects of morphine on haemodynamic variables, blood gas values and the requirement for additional anaesthetic drugs in horses undergoing surgery. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective randomized study. METHODS: Thirty-eight client-owned horses, ASA(American Society of Anesthesiologists) category I or II, undergoing elective surgical procedures, were studied. Horses were divided between two groups, and were paired according to operation, anaesthetist, body position during surgery, mass and breed. Group M+ received morphine by intravenous (IV) injection (0.15 mg kg(-1)) before induction of anaesthesia and then by infusion (0.1 mg kg(-1) hour(-1)) throughout anaesthesia. Group M- received the same anaesthetic technique (pre-anaesthetic medication with romifidine (100 microg kg(-1)) IV; induction with ketamine (2.2 mg kg(-1)) and diazepam (50 microg kg(-1)) IV; maintenance with halothane), except that morphine was excluded. Both groups received flunixin IV (1.1 mg kg(-1)) before surgery. Both groups also received 50% nitrous oxide for the first 10 minutes of anaesthesia. During anaesthesia, end-tidal halothane was maintained at 0.9% (+/-0.1%) in both groups. Heart rate (HR) and respiratory rate (fr), systolic, mean and diastolic arterial pressures were recorded every 5 minutes. Arterial blood samples were analysed every 20 minutes. Additional anaesthetics (ketamine and midazolam) were administered whenever the horse moved. Dobutamine was infused to maintain mean arterial pressure (MAP) > 58 mm Hg, but was discontinued when MAP reached 68 mm Hg. Mechanical ventilation was imposed when PaCO(2) exceeded 9.3 kPa (70 mm Hg). RESULTS: Haemodynamic data (HR and MAP) and blood gas measurements were analysed using repeated measure analysis using a mixed covariance pattern model (SAS version 8.2). A Student's t-test was used to investigate differences between groups in the doses of additional anaesthetics required. There were no significant differences between M+ or M- groups in MAP (p = 0.65), HR (p = 0.74), PaO2 (p = 0.40) or PaCO2 (p = 0.20). Fewer horses in the M+ group received additional anaesthetics (15.8% compared to 21.1% in M- group), and the mean dose of ketamine required was higher in the M- group (mean +/- SD: M-, 0.93 +/- 0.70; M+, 0.45 +/- 0.17). These differences were not statistically significant (p = 0.28). CONCLUSIONS: Pre-anaesthetic and peri-operative morphine administration is not associated with significant haemodynamic or ventilatory changes. Horses receiving morphine tended to receive fewer and lower doses of additional anaesthetic drugs, although this was not statistically significant.  相似文献

ABSTRACT

A quality index method (QIM) scheme was optimized to evaluate the freshness of whole tilapias (Oreochromis niloticus) ice stored under refrigerated conditions, which is the most common format of commercialization between primary producers and retailers. QI showed a high prediction accuracy, estimating a rejection point of 10.8 days. Principal component analysis showed the influence of the storage time on sensory, physicochemical (instrumental color and texture profile, total volatile base nitrogen, thiobarbituric acid-reactive substances, pH), and microbiological (total aerobic mesophilic count and total aerobic psychrotrophic count) quality parameters and the correlations between them. The suitability of the QIM scheme for assessing the freshness of whole tilapia was demonstrated to be a fast and accurate tool to maintain proper quality control along the production chain.  相似文献

Objective— To describe a method for radiographic measurement of proximal and distal mechanical joint angles of the canine tibia. Normal ranges were established for a population of dogs, and specifically, Labrador retrievers, with cranial cruciate ligament rupture.
Study Design— Retrospective study.
Sample Population— Tibiae (n=105) of dogs evaluated for cranial cruciate ligament rupture; 70 tibiae were from Labrador retrievers, 35 tibiae were from other breeds.
Methods— Anatomic landmarks were established and craniocaudal radiographs were used to measure the mechanical medial proximal (mMPTA) and distal (mMDTA) tibial angles in the frontal plane.
Results— Means (±SD) for all tibiae were mMPTA, 93.30±1.78°, and mMDTA, 95.99±2.70°. For Labrador retrievers, means were mMPTA, 93.38±1.81°, and mMDTA 96.34±2.51°. No significant differences were detected between Labrador Retrievers and non-Labrador retrievers with respect to mMPTA (power=0.5) or mMDTA (power=0.342). Labrador Retrievers were significantly younger than non-Labradors ( P =.003).
Conclusion— A method for measurement of the mechanical joint angles of the canine tibia in the frontal plane was established and reference ranges for a population of dogs and Labrador Retrievers with cranial cruciate ligament rupture are reported.
Clinical Relevance— The established method of measurement and references ranges can be used to aid in diagnosis, determining indications, and surgical planning for angular limb deformities of the tibia, especially when affected bilaterally. The methodology and reference values may also be used for postoperative critique.  相似文献

Objective— To compare Chinese finger trap (CFT) and 4 friction suture (FFS) techniques to secure gastrostomy (GT), jejunostomy (JT), and thoracostomy (TT) tubes of different materials.
Study Design— Prospective experimental study.
Animals— Canine cadavers (n=20).
Methods— Randomly, GT (n=20), JT (20), and TT (20) were inserted using 2 different suture techniques (10 for each tube type) and either silicone or another material (10 for each type). Axial distraction was applied to each tube until failure. Force and displacement to failure and failure mode were recorded and compared between techniques and materials for GT, JT, and TT.
Results— CFT failed most commonly by suture breakage whereas FFS failed mainly by tube slippage ( P =.003). For GT, failure occurred more commonly by tube slippage (n=15; P <.001) whereas tube breakage was more common for JT (n=10; P <.001) and suture breakage for TT (n=14; P =.022). Silicone had higher force to failure than latex with GT, lower force to failure than red rubber with JT, and lower displacement to failure than polyvinylchloride with TT.
Conclusions— Different failure modes occurred for CFT (suture breakage) and FFS (tube slippage) and among different tube types (tube slippage with GT, tube breakage with JT, and suture breakage with TT). Based on study results, CFT is preferred to FFS for anchoring silicone GT and TT. Silicone GT, red rubber JT, and polyvinylchloride TT were more secure than latex GT, silicone JT, and silicone TT, respectively.
Clinical Relevance— CFT should be preferred over FFS based on force and displacement to failure, but tube type and tissue reaction could influence anchoring strength.  相似文献

ObjectiveTo quantify the effects of medetomidine on the onset and duration of vecuronium-induced neuromuscular blockade in dogs.Study designRandomized, prospective clinical study.AnimalsTwenty-four, healthy, client-owned dogs of different breeds, aged between 6 months and 10 years and weighing between 5.0 and 40.0 kg undergoing elective surgery.MethodsDogs were randomly allocated to two groups. Pre-anaesthetic medication in group M+ was intramuscular acepromazine (ACP) 25 μg kg−1, morphine 0.5 mg kg−1 and medetomidine 5 μg kg−1. Group M− received ACP and morphine only, at the same dose rate. After induction with thiopental, anaesthesia was maintained with halothane in oxygen and nitrous oxide. End-tidal halothane concentration was maintained at 1.1%. Neuromuscular blockade was produced with intravenous vecuronium (50 μg kg−1) and monitored using a train of four stimulus applied at the ulnar nerve. The times taken for loss and reappearance of the four evoked responses (twitches [T]) were recorded. Normal and nonparametric data were analysed with an independent t-test and Mann-Whitney's U-test, respectively.ResultsThe fourth twitch (T4) disappeared at similar times in each group: 107 ± 19; [72–132] (mean ± SD; [range]) seconds in M+ and 98 ± 17 [72–120] seconds in M− dogs. The first twitch (T1) was lost at 116 ± 15; [96–132] seconds in group M+ and 109 ± 19; [72–132] seconds in M−. The fourth twitch returned significantly earlier in M+ dogs: 20.8 ± 3.8 [14–28] minutes compared with 23.8 ± 2.7 [20–27] minutes (p = 0.032). The duration of drug effect (T4 absent) was significantly shorter (p = 0.027) in M+ (18.9 ± 3.7 minutes) compared with M− dogs (22.2 ± 2.9 minutes). The recovery rate (interval between reappearance of T1 and T4) was significantly more rapid (p = 0.0003) in medetomidine recipients (3.0 ± 1.2 versus 5.2 ± 1.3 minutes).Conclusion and clinical relevance Medetomidine 5 μg kg−1 as pre-anaesthetic medication shortened the duration of effect of vecuronium in halothane-anaesthetized dogs and accelerated recovery, but did not affect the onset time. Developing effective management strategies is essential to conservation biology. Population models and sensitivity analyses on model parameters have provided a means to quantitatively compare different management strategies, allowing managers to objectively assess the resulting impacts. Inference from traditional sensitivity analyses (i.e., eigenvalue sensitivity methods) is only valid for a population at its stable age distribution, while more recent methods have relaxed this assumption and instead focused on transient population dynamics. However, very few case studies, especially in long-lived vertebrates where transient dynamics are potentially most relevant, have applied these transient sensitivity methods and compared them to eigenvalue sensitivity methods. We use bison (Bison bison) at Badlands National Park as a case study to demonstrate the benefits of transient methods in a practical management scenario involving culling strategies. Using an age and stage-structured population model that incorporates culling decisions, we find that culling strategies over short time-scales (e.g., 1–5 years) are driven largely by the standing population distribution. However, over longer time-scales (e.g., 25 years), culling strategies are governed by reproductive output. In addition, after 25 years, the strategies predicted by transient methods qualitatively coincide with those predicted by traditional eigenvalue sensitivity. Thus, transient sensitivity analyses provide managers with information over multiple time-scales in contrast to the long time-scales associated with eigenvalue sensitivity analyses. This flexibility is ideal for adaptive management schemes and allows managers to balance short-term goals with long-term viability.  相似文献
