Comparison of haemodynamic changes during two surgical methods for neutering female dogs

The aim was to investigate if intraoperative registrations of blood pressure and heart rate could be used to estimate surgical trauma. In a prospective clinical trial, registrations in eight dogs neutered by laparoscopic ovariectomy (LOE) were compared with eight dogs subjected to open ovariohysterectomy (OHE). For comparisons phases were used: phase zero = steady state after induction of anaesthesia; phase one = opening of abdomen; phase two = severing of ovarian pedicles; and, phase three = abdominal closure. During LOE, mean systolic blood pressure increased by 7 mm Hg (p = 0.05) and 15 mm Hg (p = 0.01) from phase zero to phase one and two, respectively, and during OHE by 3 mm Hg (ns) and 29 mm Hg (p < 0.0001), respectively. The increase from phase one to phase two differed between groups (p = 0.03). Heart rate did not change. Frequent intraoperative measurements of blood pressure appear a promising method for evaluating surgical trauma.     

Temporomandibular dysplasia in American Cocker Spaniels

Temporomandibular dysplasia was found in six American Cocker Spaniels related to each other. Clinical signs and diagnosis are described.     

Distribution of Serotypes of Group-B Streptococci in Herds and Cows Within an Area of Denmark

During a 3-year period strains of Group-B streptococci from 1227 (94.6 %) of a total of 1297 cases of bovine mastitis were serologically typed. Twenty-seven different antigenic combinations were found. Ab. 70 % of the strains carried polysaccharide antigens among which Type III was predominant (57 %). The protein antigen X was widespread (62 %), and 5 % of the strains were non-type able.Type Ic predominated among “false positive” bulk milk isolates (52.2 %, 12/23), but was rarely isolated from quarter milk samples (3%).Variation in the antigenic structure of infecting strains occurred to some extent and involved at least 10.8 % (132/1227) and probably 25.2 % (132/523) of the strains. Within a herd the antigenic variation was limited, however. Hence a definition of a herd type was possible. During the period of investigation infections caused by Herd Type III decreased numerically while the number of herds infected by other types remained almost stable.     

Bovine abortion associated with mixed Movar 33/63 type herpesvirus and bovine viral diarrhea virus infection.

A herpesvirus and cytopathogenic bovine viral diarrhea virus were isolated from a bovine fetus aborted in the 6th month of gestation. The herpesvirus was serologically indistinguishable from bovine herpesviruses DN-599 and Movar 33/63.     

Isolation and identification of mycobacteria from cattle slaughtered in Pakistan.

Specimens of lung, liver and mesenteric lymph node from cows and buffaloes slaughtered in the Lahore area were cultured to investigate the type of mycobacteria involved in bovine tuberculosis. Employing the concentration method, 56 out of 530 cattle were found to be culture positive for acid-fast bacteria, 48 being Mycobacterium bovis and eight atypical mycobacteria. No M tuberculosis or M avium was isolated. Most of the isolated M bovis strains were found to be highly virulent for rabbits.     

Aortic interruption in a dog.

A 3-month-old English Bulldog was found to have a discontinuity between the ascending and descending aorta. There were no signs of illness associated with the interruption. The descending aorta was supplied with blood by collateral circulation. An aortic graft of woven synthetic material was surgically implanted to connect the ascending and descending aorta. Without any restrictions on the dog's activity, the dog has lived for over 1 year and continues to do well.     

The irritancy of chlorhexidine gluconate in the genital tract of the mare

Uterine irrigation was carried out in eight Welsh pony mares using 50 ml of chlorhexidine gluconate solution diluted to give active ingredient concentrations of 0.25 per cent to 2 per cent. Treatment was repeated up to twice in mares showing no adverse effects and irritancy of treatment judged on clinical symptoms and uterine biopsy. Results indicated the inadvisability of using a higher concentration than 0.25 per cent. Three daily applications of a diluted surgical scub solution containing 2 per cent chlorhexidine gluconate to the penis of an arab stallion failed to produce symptoms or irritation. An in vitro minimum inhibitory concentration test performed with the contagious equine metritis organism confirmed its high sensitivity to both chlorhexidine gluconate preparations.     

Mycotic pneumonia in mariculture-reared green sea turtles

Microbiologic examination of 29 juvenile green sea turtles with a buoyancy abnormality revealed pulmonary infection with Sporotrichium sp, Cladosporium sp, and Paecilomyces sp. Histologic examination of the lungs revealed granulomatous lesions containing branching septate hyphae. The diagnosis was mycotic pneumonia.
