ABSTRACT

Two formulations of wood preservative one containing water-dispersible copper naphthenate (CuN) alone and in combination with sodium fluoride (NaF) were used to treat southern pine sapwood blocks to determine the effect of the addition of sodium fluoride in the QNS on the protection against wood decay fungi using laboratory soil block tests following AWPA (American Wood protection Association) standard E10-16 [American Wood Protection Association AWPA-E10. (2016 American Wood Protection Association. (2016) Standard E10-16 Laboratory Method for Evaluating the Decay Resistance of Wood-Based Materials Against Pure Basidiomycete Cultures: Soil/Block Test. [Google Scholar]) Laboratory Method for Evaluating the Decay Resistance of Wood-based Materials Against Pure Basidiomycete Cultures: Soil/Block Test]. The standard consists in exposing treated blocks to pure monoculture of white rot (Irpex lacteus (FP-105915) and Trametes versicolor (R-105)) and brown rot fungi (Gloeophyllum trabeum (Madison 617) and Postia placenta (Madison 698) during a specific period. The weight loss (WL) in percentage of treated blocks was used as an indicator of the biological performance of treated blocks against basidiomycetes at specific retentions. Minimum WL was obtained with blocks treated with the formulation containing mixture of QNS and sodium fluoride with the retention of 0.29?kg/m3 Cu and 0.51?kg/m3 of fluorine in treated blocks. A copper retention of 1.65?kg/m3 from blocks treated with formulations containing only QNS was needed to obtain similar WL to blocks containing blocks Cu++ and F? (fluorine). The lower Cu retention is attributed to a combination of the presence of the fluorine with some toxic activities against bacteria and decay and the interaction of anions fluorine and ionic Cu (II) in the aqueous treating solutions to form more soluble biological toxic hydrate of copper fluoride ((H2O Cu (II) F2) in treated blocks compared to copper complexes less biological available in water-dispersible CuN-treated bocks.  相似文献

In its 40‐year history, the science of conservation has faced unprecedented challenges in terms of environmental damage and rapid global change, and environmental problems are only increasing as greater demands are placed on limited natural resources. Conservation science has been adapting to keep pace with these changes. Here, we highlight contemporary and emerging trends and innovations in conservation science that we believe represent the most effective responses to biodiversity threats. We focus on specific areas where conservation science has had to adjust its approach to address emerging threats to biodiversity, including habitat destruction and degradation, climate change, declining populations and invasive species. We also document changes in attitudes, norms and practices among conservation scientists. A key component to success is engaging and maintaining public support for conservation, which can be facilitated through the use of technology. These recent trends in conservation and management are innovative and will assist in optimizing conservation strategies, increasing our leverage with the general public and tackling our current environmental challenges.  相似文献

Recreationists who encounter more people than their normative tolerance for seeing others usually feel more crowded than those encountering fewer than their norm. This research note extends this observation–norm–evaluation relationship (e.g., encounter–norm–crowding) to other evaluations and indicators. Data were from a survey of anglers on the Gulkana National Wild River in Alaska (n = 288). Respondents who encountered more people than their norm felt more crowded than those encountering fewer than their norm. When impacts from other social indicators (e.g., camping within sight or sound of other groups, fishing area competition) exceeded user norms, crowding was higher and satisfaction with overall trip quality was lower than for those experiencing less than their norms. When impacts from resource indicators (e.g., litter, impacted campsites) exceeded norms, satisfaction with both environmental quality and trip quality were lower than for those experiencing less than their norms. The encounter–norm– crowding generalization, therefore, extended to other indicators and evaluations.  相似文献

  1. Abstractions and diversions are prevalent in river networks worldwide; however, specific mechanisms and measures reflecting changes in functional characteristics of aquatic assemblages in response to flow abstraction have not been well established. In particular, the influence of small takes on fish assemblages is poorly understood.
  2. Field surveys and stable‐isotope analyses were used to evaluate the impact of differing levels of flow abstraction on fish assemblage structure, and native–non‐native patterns of coexistence, associated with small surface water abstractions in four streams in New Zealand. Study design accounted for longitudinal processes (spatial autocorrelation) to isolate the effects of abstractions on fish assemblages.
  3. Reaches with reduced flows downstream of abstraction points had significantly lower fish abundances per metre of stream length, probably because of decreased habitat size, altered interspecific interactions and barriers to movement. The loss of larger fish in reaches with high abstraction resulted in shallower mass–abundance slopes and shorter stable isotope‐derived food‐chain lengths, likely to have been caused by fewer trophic links in the food web. The large fish absent from these reaches were flow‐sensitive introduced salmonids, resulting in higher relative abundances of small‐bodied native fish, probably as a result of predatory and competitive release.
  4. Quantification of metrics designed to characterize ecosystem functioning as well as abundance and species composition indicated that small water abstractions can alter both the structure and composition of stream fish assemblages and modify the outcomes of native–non‐native species interactions. Thus, a better understanding of the effects of small abstractions could be used to improve the strategic management of fish in invaded riverscapes.

The Power Plant Integrated Systems: Chemical Emissions Studies (PISCES) Database sponsored by the Electric Power Research Institute is a powerful tool for evaluating and comparing the level of trace substances in power plant process streams. In this paper, data are presented on the level of several selected trace metals found in a few of the aqueous streams present in power plants. Seasonal variations in pore water and solid phase geochemistry were investigated in urbanized minerotrophic peat sediments located in southwestern Michigan, USA. Sediment pore waters were collected anaerobically, using pore water equilibrators with dialysis membranes (“peepers”) and analyzed for pH, alkalinity, dissolved ΣPO4 ?3, ΣNH4 +, ΣS?2, SO4 ?2, Fe+3, Fe+2, and Mn+2 at 1-2 cm intervals to a depth of 50 cm. Cores collected adjacent to the peepers during all four seasons were analyzed for reactive solid phase Fe according to extraction methods proposed by Kostka and Luther (1994). The association of Fe and trace metals (Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Co, Cd, U) with operationally defined solid phase fractions (carbonates, iron and manganese oxides, sulfides/organics and residual) was assessed for cores extracted during winter and spring using extraction methods proposed by Tessier et al. (1979, 1982). Pore water Fe and S data demonstrate a clear seasonal variation in redox stratification of these sediments. The redox stratification becomes more compressed in spring and summer, with relatively more reducing conditions closer to the sediment water interface (SWI), and less reducing conditions near the SWI in fall and winter. In the upper 10–15 cm of sediment, the pool of ascorbate extractable Fe, thought to be indicative of reactive Fe(III) oxides, diminishes during spring and summer, in agreement with seasonal changes in redox stratification indicated by the pore water data. Tessier extractions indicate that the total extractable quantity of all metals analyzed in this study decrease with depth, and that the majority of the non-residual Fe, Pb, Zn, Cu, Cr, Co, Cd, and U is typically associated with the sulfide/organic fraction of the sediments at all depths. Non-residual Mn, in contrast, is significantly associated with carbonates in the upper 15–25 cm of the sediment, and predominantly associated with the sulfide/organic fraction only in deeper sediments.  相似文献

本文对完达蜂斗菜的野生植株和驯化栽培植株进行了过氧化物酶和酯酶的同工酶分析。其结果表明:无论是野生植株还是驯化植株都有相对稳定的酶谱,而且由于驯化栽培条件的变化面使酶谱发生相应的变化。各条酶带的活性,迁移率及数目的变化可以作为环境条件改变而引起新陈代谢变化的生化指标。  相似文献
