The effects of feeding live or frozen grass shrimp (Palaemonetes varians) to the cuttlefish, Sepia officinalis, were determined in two experiments. During Experiment I, two populations of 30 cuttlefish (aged 90 days old) were fed either live or frozen grass shrimp. Cuttlefish fed live shrimp grew larger, matured earlier, had a shorter life cycle (255 days) than the ones fed frozen shrimp (282 days), and had lower mortality. Females from the group fed frozen shrimp matured a month later but were significantly larger, 130.9 ± 38.5 g, compared to 74.2 ± 16.0 g, laid larger eggs, 0.47 ± 0.11 g, compared to 0.28 ± 0.10 g, and had higher individual fecundity (411 eggs female−1, compared to 150 eggs female−1). Newly born hatchlings from both groups had similar weights. During Experiment II, six replicates of 15 cuttlefish (50 days old) were used, three for each of the two diets tested. The exact same amount of live or frozen shrimp was provided to both populations twice a day. No differences in growth and feeding rates or food conversions were found at the end of the experiment. During the first week, cuttlefish fed frozen shrimp grew larger, and had higher conversion rates, compared to the ones fed live shrimp. Mortality was higher for the group fed live shrimp (36.6%) in Experiment II, mainly occurring during the last week. Mortality for cuttlefish fed frozen shrimp in Experiment II was 2.2%. Results obtained here indicate that freezing the grass shrimp only had a negative effect on the survival of S. officinalis in Experiment I. The effects of culture density and bottom areas on cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) culture were studied. Cuttle fish were cultured under three experimental combinations of culture density and bottom area: (1) high density and small bottom surface area; (2) low density and large bottom area; (3) high density and large bottom area. Each experimental protocol was repeated in triplicate. Average weights at the end of the experiment were of 65.8 ± 5.8, 87.1 ± 5.6 and 78.7 ± 5.9 g for cuttlefish cultured under the conditions of protocol 1, 2, and 3, respectively; these differences were significant between each of the three groups. Total biomass increased faster (up to 7.5 kg per tank) under the high density/large bottom area conditions (protocol 3) due to the larger number of animals and low mortality in those tanks. Growth rates (%bw day−1) were different between protocols, with growth rates of 2.1 ± 0.1, 3.0 ± 0.2, and 2.5 ± 0.1%bw day−1 obtained for cuttlefish cultured according to protocol 1, 2, or 3, respectively. Average feeding rates were similar for the three groups—10.7 ± 0.8, 9.7 ± 2.0, and 9.6 ± 1.1%bw day−1 for cuttlefish cultured according to protocols 1, 2, and 3, respectively, while food conversions (%) were different—21.5 ± 3.2, 32.4 ± 2.5, and 27.0 ± 1.1%bw day−1, respectively. Total mortality was high in the high density/small bottom area tanks, 30%, while it was very low for the groups cultured under conditions of low and high density/large bottom area, 4%. Based on these results, we conclude that culture conditions that provide large bottom areas also provide good survival conditions and promote growth in comparison those with small bottom areas, even under conditions of lower culture densities.  相似文献

Collagens are the most abundant high molecular weight proteins in both invertebrate and vertebrate organisms, including mammals, and possess mainly a structural role, existing different types according with their specific organization in distinct tissues. From this, they have been elected as one of the key biological materials in tissue regeneration approaches. Also, industry is constantly searching for new natural sources of collagen and upgraded methodologies for their production. The most common sources are from bovine and porcine origin, but other ways are making their route, such as recombinant production, but also extraction from marine organisms like fish. Different organisms have been proposed and explored for collagen extraction, allowing the sustainable production of different types of collagens, with properties depending on the kind of organism (and their natural environment) and extraction methodology. Such variety of collagen properties has been further investigated in different ways to render a wide range of applications. The present review aims to shed some light on the contribution of marine collagens for the scientific and technological development of this sector, stressing the opportunities and challenges that they are and most probably will be facing to assume a role as an alternative source for industrial exploitation.  相似文献

Economic feasibility studies regarding aquaculture systems are relatively scarce, but they are important to potential investors and for the allocation of resources for research and technological development. This study evaluated the economic viability of cobia cage culture from the actual investment and operational costs of a large-scale operation off Recife, northeastern Brazil (industrial system; IS), and a family-run farm located in a near-shore area of Rio de Janeiro (familiar system; FS). The IS had twenty-four 1607 m3 floating cages deployed at a depth of 24 m, while the FS had six 75 m3 wooden cages installed in a sheltered 6- to 7-m-deep area. Analyses of profitability (gross revenue, operational profit, cost price and break-even production) and investment (net present value—NPV; and payback time) were performed. An analysis of sensitivity was also carried out. The IS required an initial investment of approximately US$ 1.5 million dollars and was more sensitive to FCR, selling price and productivity fluctuations than the FS. The FS required a relatively small initial investment (US$ 16,000 dollars), which makes it more flexible to variations in production parameters and market fluctuations. The NPV was positive for both systems, and the payback times were estimated to be 3.88 years for the IS and 2.07 years for the FS. Therefore, given the assumptions of this study, cage culture of cobia in Brazil may be considered economically feasible in offshore production systems and in near-shore, FSs. Governmental support through decreased import taxes is recommended as a way to accelerate the early development of the cage culture of marine fish in Brazil.  相似文献

The Gulf of Mexico (GOM) is the primary spawning ground for western Atlantic bluefin tuna (Thunnus thynnus). In this work, information reported by previous studies about the preferred environmental conditions for the occurrence of bluefin tuna larvae in the GOM is integrated into a dimensionless index, the BFT_Index. This index is used to evaluate the spatial and temporal variability of areas with favorable environmental conditions for larvae within the GOM during 1993–2011. The main findings of this work are that: (i) the proposed index successfully captures the spatial and temporal variability in the in situ occurrence of bluefin tuna larvae; (ii) areas with favorable environmental conditions for larvae in the GOM exhibit year‐to‐year spatial and temporal variability linked with mesoscale ocean features and sea surface temperature; and (iii) comparison of the BFT_Index‐derived variability with recruitment of age‐0 fish estimated from recent stock assessment indicates that changes in environmental conditions may drive a relevant component (~58%) of the recruitment variability. The comparison with the recruitment dataset further revealed the existence of key regions linked with recruitment in the central/northern GOM, and that the Loop Current may function as a trap for larvae, possibly leading to low survival rates. Above (below) average conditions for occurrence of larvae in the GOM during spring were observed in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2006–2008, and 2011 (1994, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2003 and 2010). Results reported here have potential applications to assessment of bluefin tuna.  相似文献

The foam of sparkling wines is a key parameter of their quality. However, the compounds that are directly involved in foam formation and stabilization are not yet completely established. In this work, seven sparkling wines were produced in Bairrada appellation (Portugal) under different conditions and their foaming properties evaluated using a Mosalux-based device. Fractionation of the sparkling wines into four independent fractions, (1) high molecular weight material, with molecular weight higher than 12 kDa (HMW), (2) hydrophilic material with molecular weigh between 1 and 12 kDa (AqIMW), (3) hydrophobic material with molecular weigh between 1 and 12 kDa (MeIMW), and (4) hydrophobic material with a molecular weight lower than 1 kDa (MeLMW), allowed the observation that the wines presenting the lower foam stability were those that presented lower amounts of the MeLMW fraction. The fraction that presented the best foam stability was HMW. When HMW is combined with MeLMW fraction, the foam stability largely increased. This increase was even larger, approaching the foam stability of the sparkling wine, when HMW was combined with the less hydrophobic subfraction of MeLMW (fraction 3). Electrospray tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS) of fraction 3 allowed the assignment of polyethylene glycol oligomers (n = 5-11) and diethylene glycol 8-hydroxytridecanoate glyceryl acetate. To observe if these molecules occur in sparkling wine foam, the MeLMW was recovered directly from the sparkling wine foam and was also analyzed by ESI-MS/MS. The presence of monoacylglycerols of palmitic and stearic acids, as well as four glycerylethylene glycol fatty acid derivatives, was observed. These surface active compounds are preferentially partitioned by the sparkling wine foam rather than the liquid phase, allowing the inference of their role as key components in the promotion and stabilization of sparkling wine foam.  相似文献

In this work, the galactomannans from roasted coffee infusions were purified by 50% ethanol precipitation, anion exchange chromatography, and phenylboronic acid-immobilized Sepharose chromatography. Specific enzymatic hydrolysis of the beta-(1-->4)-D-mannan backbone allowed us to conclude that the galactomannans of roasted coffee infusions are high molecular weight supports of low molecular weight brown compounds. Also, the molecular weight of the brown compounds linked to the galactomannan increases with the increase of the coffee degree of roast. The reaction pathways of galactomannans during the coffee roasting process were inferred from the detection of specific chemical markers by gas chromatography-electron impact mass spectrometry and/or electrospray ionization tandem mass spectrometry. Maillard reaction, caramelization, isomerization, oxidation, and decarboxylation pathways were identified by detection of Amadori compounds, 1,6-beta-anhydromannose, fructose, glucose, mannonic acid, 2-ketogluconic acid, and arabinonic acid in the reducing end of the obtained oligosaccharides. The implication of the several competitive reaction pathways is discussed and related to the structural changes of the galactomannans present in the roasted coffee infusions.  相似文献

A simple procedure based on solid-phase extraction and high performance liquid chromatography coupled to diode array detector has been developed and validated for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of cis- and trans-resveratrol in wines. The method was linear from 0.025 (lower limit of quantitation, LLOQ) to 15 μg/mL for trans-resveratrol and from 0.023 (LLOQ) to 0.92 μg/mL for cis-resveratrol, with correlation coefficients higher than 0.99 for both isomers. Intra- and interday precision and accuracy were in conformity with the criteria normally accepted in method validation, that is, CVs inferior to 15% and mean relative errors within a ±14% interval. The extraction presented mean efficiencies close to 100% for both analytes. The validated methodology was applied to 186 Portuguese red wines from different regions, grape varieties and vintage. The results obtained showed that the content of trans-resveratrol in red wines ranged from 0.05 to 10.9 μg/mL, while the concentrations of cis-resveratrol ranged from 0.04 to 8.71 μg/mL.  相似文献

The potential of the parasitoid Psyllaephagus bliteus Riek for the biological control of the eucalyptus pest Glycaspis brimblecombei Moore (Hemiptera: Aphalaridae) nymphs is high. This research sought to analyze the courtship, male competition, and mating behavior of P. bliteus at the proportions of 1:1 and 2:1 males to female in a Petri dish (5 cm diameter), and to describe the ovary histology of virgin and mated females of this parasitoid. At 1:1, males touch the antennae and thorax–abdomen of females during courtship, but females avoid mate attempts before they are 48 h old. At 2:1, the competition between male parasitoids inhibits mating. The histology of ovaries of virgin and mated P. bliteus females is similar, with two well-defined germarium and vitellarium regions, with oocytes at different developmental stages, including mature ones rich in yolk and with eggshell. A clearer understanding of the reproductive behavior and histology of P. bliteus aids in the use of this parasitoid for the biological control of G. brimblecombei.  相似文献
