In a replicated 4 × 4 Latin square experiment conducted in summer, eight mature Thoroughbred horses received two diets, control and fat-supplemented, and were exercised at two fitness levels designed to increase daily digestible energy (DE) requirements to approximately 150% (fitness level I) and 200% (fitness level II) of maintenance. In a second experiment during the winter, horses received the two diets in a switchback design and exercised at fitness level II. After 3 wk adaptation to treatments, feed and fecal samples were collected and horses galloped a standardized exercise test (SET) designed to increase the heart rate above 185 bpm for 1200 m. Vital signs were monitored and blood samples were obtained. Feed intake increased as fitness level increased (P < .05). Horses on the fat-supplemented diet required less feed (P < .05) to meet the energy requirements at a given fitness level. Daily DE intake was higher (P < .05) for the horses exercised at fitness level II to meet the increased metabolic demands. Heart rate, respiration rate and rectal temperature all increased (P < .05) with exercise. No treatment effects were found for heart rate (P >. 10) or rectal temperature (P > .30). Horses exercised in the winter had lower (P < .05) respiration rates, indicative of less problems dissipating excess body heat. Plasma aldosterone concentrations increased (P < .05) with exercise, corresponding to an increase in plasma K concentrations. Horses exercised in the summer exhibited higher (P < .05) plasma aldosterone concentrations than horses worked in the winter. Plasma CI and Na concentrations did not change (P > .30) with any treatment or exercise, indicating that the horses were not sufficiently stressed to induce any significant dehydration.  相似文献

Summary Choong's (1963) data for isothermal sorption of water vapor by wood are used to compute pressures, chemical potentials, and entropies of water in the wood specimens of his nonisothermal mass equilibrium experiments. Entropies of both the bound water and water vapor were reasonably constant. A balance existed between thermal diffusion and mass diffusion, as indicated by gradients in temperature and chemical potential. This balance also is suggested by opposing gradients in spreading pressure and vapor pressure. Equal chemical potentials showed that the vapor and bound water were in equilibrium. The model proposed by Siau (1980) for nonisothermal diffusion is consistent with these results. Expressions are given for the two unknown parameters in this model: moisture conductivity and heat of transfer. The antibiotic resistance of 16 Aeromonas (A.) salmonicida strains isolated from diseased fish and environmental samples in Korea from 2006 to 2009 were investigated in this study. Tetracycline or quinolone resistance was observed in eight and 16 of the isolates, respectively, based on the measured minimal inhibitory concentrations. Among the tetracycline-resistant strains, seven of the isolates harbored tetA gene and one isolate harbored tetE gene. Additionally, quinolone-resistance determining regions (QRDRs) consisting of the gyrA and parC genes were amplified and sequenced. Among the quinolone-resistant A. salmonicida strains, 15 harbored point mutations in the gyrA codon 83 which were responsible for the corresponding amino acid substitutions of Ser83→Arg83 or Ser83→Asn83. We detected no point mutations in other QRDRs, such as gyrA codons 87 and 92, and parC codons 80 and 84. Genetic similarity was assessed via pulsed-field gel electrophoresis, and the results indicated high clonality among the Korean antibiotic-resistant strains of A. salmonicida.  相似文献

The causative agent of stomatitis pneumoenteritis complex was isolated in domesticated goats and Vero cell culture. It was identified immunologically and morphologically as identical with the "Peste des Petits Ruminants" virus. There were cross reactions between stomatitis pneumoenteritis complex virus isolate and rinderpest virus by immunodiffusion and complement fixation tests but no cross neutralization. Goats recovered from stomatitis pneumoenteritis complex were protected against a challenge with rinderpest virus that was lethal to control goats. Ultrastructural morphology revealed intracytoplasmic and intranuclear inclusions made up of random arrays of fibrillar strands. Pleomorphic particles budded from the plasma membrane of infected cells and enveloped virions were seen extracellularly. Specific ferritin tagging was demonstrated in the stomatitis pneumoenteritis complex virus infected cells treated with homologous and peste des petits ruminants viral antibody systems but little, if any, tagging in the heterologous rinderpest system.  相似文献

This study evaluated whether pentoxifylline (PTX) present in the flushing extender influenced the function of equine epididymal spermatozoa after recovery and after thawing. For this experiment, 58 testicles from 29 Brazilian Jumping Horses were used. Cauda epididymides of each stallion were separated and flushed with a skim milk extender, with or without 7.18 mM PTX and then subjected to the freezing process. Samples flushed with the extender containing PTX showed a significant increase in total motility, progressive motility, straight line velocity, curvilinear velocity, and percentage of rapid sperm immediately after the recovery of epididymal sperm and after 15 minutes of incubation at 37°C (P < .05). However, the presence of PTX in the flushing extender did not affect the post-thaw motility parameters or plasma membrane integrity (P > .05). The results of this study showed that the PTX present in the flushing extender improved motility parameters of recently recovered epididymal sperm and had no deleterious effects on plasma membrane integrity and freezability of equine epididymal sperm.  相似文献

This study was designed to determine the effects of experimental inoculation with pseudorabies virus on the reproductive tracts of young adult boars. Pseudorabies virus was inoculated intranasally into 12 boars and intrapreputially into four boars. All animals seroconverted after nasal or preputial inoculation. Semen abnormalities were observed 21 days postinoculation with partial recovery by 50 days postinoculation. Virus was isolated from the preputial sheath of two intrapreputially inoculated boars 12 days postinoculation. It was concluded that pseudorabies virus infection can be established via preputial inoculation and that decreased spermatogenesis and infertility can result.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To describe and evaluate a technique for radical resection of the lateral body wall for treatment of fibrosarcoma with reconstruction using polypropylene mesh and a caudal superficial epigastric axial pattern flap in cats. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, clinical study. ANIMALS OR SAMPLE POPULATION: Six client-owned cats with fibrosarcoma. METHODS: Six cats with histologically confirmed fibrosarcoma of the lateral body wall were staged using radiography and/or computer tomography scanning. Preoperative radiotherapy was used in 3 cats. All cats had the lateral abdominal wall resected and reconstructed with polypropylene mesh. A caudal superficial epigastric flap was mobilized and rotated to close the skin deficit. The animals were evaluated after surgery for wound complications, tumor recurrence, and metastasis. Outcome was assessed by patient examination and client consultation. RESULTS: Minor dehiscence of the skin flaps occurred in 2 cats, and 1 other cat was successfully resuscitated from respiratory and cardiac arrest after surgery. All tissue specimens were tumor-free at the surgical margins. Follow-up times ranged from 12 to 21 months, with a mean time of 17.2 months. None of the cats had evidence of local tumor recurrence or metastasis; outcome was judged good to excellent in all cats. CONCLUSIONS AND CLINICAL RELEVANCE: Radical lateral body-wall resection and reconstruction is an effective technique for achieving local tumor control with acceptable patient morbidity. Further studies are needed to assess whether the technique will result in improved tumor-free intervals and survival times.  相似文献
