Platelet number, mean platelet volume, and platelet function were evaluated in 34 clinically normal dogs and 28 heartworm-infected (HWI) dogs. Mean platelet numbers for dogs of the HWI group was not significantly lower than those for dogs of the control group (214,000 vs 254,000 cells/microliter); however, 6 (21%) HWI dogs had platelet numbers less than 150,000/microliter, compared with only 2 (6%) heartworm-negative dogs. The mean platelet volume was not significantly different (7.8 vs 7.7 fl) between the 2 groups of dogs. Mean platelet aggregation responses to intermediate and low concentrations of collagen (3.0 and 1.5 micrograms) and to high, intermediate, and low concentrations of ADP (25, 10, and 5 microM) were greater in dogs of the HWI group. Mean platelet 14C-serotonin release was also greater in HWI dogs in response to high concentration of ADP (25 microM) and to intermediate concentration of collagen (3.0 micrograms).  相似文献

Hemorrhagic shock was induced in nonsplenectomized dogs by removing 41% of their blood volume over a 15-minute period. Hemodynamic and metabolic variables were determined prior to and for 3 hours after completion of hemorrhage. One group of 5 dogs was not treated. After the 30-minute sample was collected, a second group of 5 dogs was given lactated Ringer solution (LRS) at 88 ml/kg of body weight, IV. A third group of 5 dogs was given LRS (88 ml/kg, IV) and prednisolone sodium succinate (11 mg/kg, IV) 30 minutes after hemorrhage. The IV administration of LRS was completed within 15 minutes. The glucocorticoid was administered as an IV bolus after 500 ml of LRS had been given. The large volume and administration of LRS significantly (P = 0.05) improved many of the hemodynamic and metabolic effects of acute hemorrhage and hemorrhagic shock. At one time or another during the 2.5-hour observation period after the initiation of treatment, mean arterial pressure, cardiac index, systemic vascular resistance, heart rate, respiratory rate, lactate, glucose, and arterial and venous blood gas values were significantly (P = 0.05) improved, compared with baseline values. The addition of prednisolone sodium succinate to the treatment regimen improved the effectiveness of LRS alone only in some dogs at random sampling times. Significant trends were not observed except, possibly, the improvement of venous pH and A-V pH and PCO2 differences.  相似文献

A stochastic simulation model designed to aid decision-making in Australia's campaign to eradicate bovine brucellosis is outlined. The model uses data related to district cattle numbers, disease prevalence and campaign intensity to project workload requirements, culling rates and campaign duration under alternative campaign strategies. Explicit account is taken of the uncertainty associated with initial disease prevalence and eradication procedures and provision is made for the updating of projections as actual campaign data become available. The purpose of the present study was to investigate the influence of strain of Holstein-Friesian (HF) cow and feeding system (FS) on the lactation curve characteristics of spring-calving cows. The Wilmink model was used to analyse the lactation curves. The three strains of HF cows compared were high production North American (HP), high durability North American (HD) and high Breeding Worth New Zealand (NZ). The three FS compared were a high milk output from pasture feed system (MP), a high concentrate feed system (HC) and a high stocking rate feed system (HS). A repeated measures model with a factorial arrangement of treatments was used to determine the influence of strain of HF, FS, parity and their interactions on the shape of the lactation curve. The curve was described based on yield at calving, the degree of ascendancy between calving and peak yield, and the persistency after peak yield. Analysis of the residuals indicated a good fit of the Wilmink curve to the data set. Strain of HF, FS, parity and the interaction of strain of HF with FS had significant effects on lactation curve characteristics. In all three FS, the HP strain achieved the highest milk production post-claving and peak yield, with the lowest persistency of lactation. In the HC system, milk production post-claving and at peak yield were higher for all three strains. Offering higher levels of concentrate supplementation to the HP strain on a pasture-based system improved their persistency of lactation. The highest persistency of lactation was achieved with NZ strain. The highest milk production post-claving and at peak and lowest persistency was achieved with third parity cows. The existence of strain by feed system interactions for lactation curve parameters clearly exhibits that the optimum system of production varies with strain of HF.  相似文献

Spectral analysis of current speed and chlorophyll a measurements in Lake Tahoe, California and Nevada, indicates that considerably more variance exists at longer length scales in chlorophyll than in the current speeds. Increasingly, above scales of approximately 100 meters, chlorophyll does not behave as a simple passive contaminant distributed by turbulence, which indicates that biological processes contribute significantly to the observed variance at these large length scales.  相似文献
