Global change is exacerbating the need for more effective mechanisms and approaches for working towards economic, social/cultural
and environmental sustainability. It is now well recognised that science for sustainability will require integrated problem-focussed
research that is by nature trans-disciplinary. Resolutions to both global and regional scale issues must involve participation
of a diverse number of stakeholders. One region that would benefit greatly from such an integrated approach is the Northern
Territory of Australia. This area is home to some of the most pristine savanna landscapes in the world and it is also occupied
by one of the oldest living human cultures which are still in existence today. However, in recent years there has been increasing
pressure to develop this region. The Northern Territory is also facing problems associated with having a growing Aboriginal
population with deepening health and social problems. So as well as needing to facilitate adaptation in response to global
change and development for economic prosperity of the region, there is an obligation to alter management practices to reduce
social disadvantage. In light of this, it will be important that future landscapes are multifunctional and designed to ensure
the preservation of biological and cultural diversity, as well as having provision for the livelihoods of the people that
live within them. This article recommends the adoption of a landscape ecological approach for strategic development and sustainable
planning, which captures and incorporates the values and identities of the different stakeholders, as well as engaging them
in a continuous, adaptive process of planning and management, and in doing so discusses the importance of human ecological
holism as part of the conceptual framework for landscape ecology. 相似文献

Low pathogenicity avian influenza virus (LPAIV) and lentogenic Newcastle disease virus (lNDV) are commonly reported causes of respiratory disease in poultry worldwide with similar clinical and pathobiological presentation. Co-infections do occur but are not easily detected, and the impact of co-infections on pathobiology is unknown. In this study chickens and turkeys were infected with a lNDV vaccine strain (LaSota) and a H7N2 LPAIV (A/turkey/VA/SEP-67/2002) simultaneously or sequentially three days apart. No clinical signs were observed in chickens co-infected with the lNDV and LPAIV or in chickens infected with the viruses individually. However, the pattern of virus shed was different with co-infected chickens, which excreted lower titers of lNDV and LPAIV at 2 and 3 days post inoculation (dpi) and higher titers at subsequent time points. All turkeys inoculated with the LPAIV, whether or not they were exposed to lNDV, presented mild clinical signs. Co-infection effects were more pronounced in turkeys than in chickens with reduction in the number of birds shedding virus and in virus titers, especially when LPAIV was followed by lNDV. In conclusion, co-infection of chickens or turkeys with lNDV and LPAIV affected the replication dynamics of these viruses but did not affect clinical signs. The effect on virus replication was different depending on the species and on the time of infection. These results suggest that infection with a heterologous virus may result in temporary competition for cell receptors or competent cells for replication, most likely interferon-mediated, which decreases with time. 相似文献

The extraordinary abundance of ants in tropical rainforest canopies has led to speculation that numerous arboreal ant taxa feed principally as "herbivores" of plant and insect exudates. Based on nitrogen (N) isotope ratios of plants, known herbivores, arthropod predators, and ants from Amazonia and Borneo, we find that many arboreal ant species obtain little N through predation and scavenging. Microsymbionts of ants and their hemipteran trophobionts might play key roles in the nutrition of taxa specializing on N-poor exudates. For plants, the combined costs of biotic defenses and herbivory by ants and tended Hemiptera are substantial, and forest losses to insect herbivores vastly exceed current estimates. 相似文献

Cholera toxin (Ctx) is a powerful mucosal adjuvant with potential applications for oral vaccination of swine. Dendritic cells (DC) play a key role in the decision between immunity and tolerance, and are likely target cells for mediating Ctx functions in vivo. Therefore, we examined the capacity of Ctx to enhance stimulatory activity of porcine monocyte-derived DC (MoDC). Ctx promoted the development of a semi-mature DC phenotype, with decreased levels of MHC class II and CD40, but increased CD80/86 expression. These changes were associated with activation of extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK), but not NFkappaB or c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK). Functionally, Ctx-priming greatly diminished T cell stimulatory capacity both in antigen-specific and superantigen-induced proliferation assays. The lower proliferation rate was not due to increased apoptosis of either DC or T cells. Ctx suppressed TNFalpha secretion by MoDC, but induced IL-10 production. The observed effects on T cell proliferation could only be partially mimicked by IL-10 alone. However, addition of recombinant TNFalpha to co-cultures of Ctx-primed MoDC and lymphocytes restored lymphocyte proliferation in a concentration-dependent manner. Several remote observations have indicated that water ice may be presented in permanently shadowed craters of the Moon. The Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite (LCROSS) mission was designed to provide direct evidence. On 9 October 2009, a spent Centaur rocket struck the persistently shadowed region within the lunar south pole crater Cabeus, ejecting debris, dust, and vapor. This material was observed by a second "shepherding" spacecraft, which carried nine instruments, including cameras, spectrometers, and a radiometer. Near-infrared absorbance attributed to water vapor and ice and ultraviolet emissions attributable to hydroxyl radicals support the presence of water in the debris. The maximum total water vapor and water ice within the instrument field of view was 155 ± 12 kilograms. Given the estimated total excavated mass of regolith that reached sunlight, and hence was observable, the concentration of water ice in the regolith at the LCROSS impact site is estimated to be 5.6 ± 2.9% by mass. In addition to water, spectral bands of a number of other volatile compounds were observed, including light hydrocarbons, sulfur-bearing species, and carbon dioxide. 相似文献

Mycoplasma agalactiae causes chronic infections in small ruminants and remains endemic in many regions of the world, despite intensive and costly eradication programs. In this study, the innate genomic plasticity of M. agalactiae was exploited to design and assess a combination of molecular epidemiological tools to trace the pathogen in different geographic locations and to understand its emergence or re-emergence after eradication campaigns. For this purpose, two collections of M. agalactiae isolates, representing European outbreaks or localized endemic disease in a single region of France, were subjected to RFLP (Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphism) analyses using two sets of DNA probes (distributed across the genome and specific for the vpma gene locus), and a previously described VNTR (Variable Number Tandem Repeats) analysis. A combination of four genome-specific DNA probes and two VNTRs gave the highest discriminative power. Molecular typing revealed that, while isolates from diverse geographical origins fell into clearly different groups, the endemic disease repeatedly observed in the Western Pyrenees region over the past 30 years has been caused by a unique subtype of M. agalactiae. This indicates that the re-emergence of the pathogen after seemingly successful eradication programs is not due to the importation of exotic strains, but to the persistence of local reservoirs of infection. 相似文献
