This paper compares phosphorus (P) concentrations in sediments from two watersheds, one with, and one without, intensive animal agriculture. The watersheds are in the coastal plain of the Chesapeake Bay and have similar physiographic characteristics. Agriculture in the Pocomoke River, MD, watershed supplied 2.7 percent of all broiler chickens produced in the USA in 1997. Poultry litter is an abundant, local source of manure for crops. Broiler chickens are not produced in the Popes Creek, VA, watershed and poultry manure is, therefore, not a major source of fertilizer. The largest concentrations of P in sediment samples are found in floodplain and main-stem bottom sediment in both watersheds. Concentrations of total P and P extracted with 1N HCl are significantly larger in main-stem bottom sediments from the Pocomoke River than in main-stem bottom sediments from Popes Creek. Larger concentrations of P are associated with what are potentially redox sensitive iron oxyhydroxides in sediment samples from the Pocomoke River watershed than are associated with what are potentially redox sensitive iron oxyhydroxides in sediment samples from the Popes Creek watershed. Data for P and iron (Fe) concentrations in sediments from the Popes Creek watershed provide a numerical framework (baseline) with which to compare P and Fe concentrations in sediment from the Pocomoke River watershed.  相似文献

Conventional water-soluble iodine-containing contrast media such as salts of diatrizoic and iothalamic acids dissociate in solution resulting in preparations which are very high in osmolality. Intravascular or intrathecal injections of these compounds therefore represent severe physicochemical insult to the body, with many associated side effects. Contrast media with lower osmolalities have been produced in two ways: first by producing compounds which do not dissociate in solution (metrizamide, and more recently iopamidol and iohexol), and second by creating dimers (ioxaglate). These media provide significant clinical advantages over the conventional, hyperosmolar media. A new class of nonionizing dimers with even lower osmolalities are currently being investigated. This paper reviews the development of the low osmolar media, their advantages, and their use in medical and veterinary radiology.  相似文献

Root exudates play a major role in the mobilization of sparingly soluble nutrients in the rhizosphere. Since the amount and composition of major metabolites in root exudates from one plant species have not yet been systematically compared under different nutrient deficiencies, relations between exudation patterns and the type of nutrient being deficient remain poorly understood. Comparing root exudates from axenically grown maize plants exposed to N, K, P, or Fe deficiency showed a higher release of glutamate, glucose, ribitol, and citrate from Fe‐deficient plants, while P deficiency stimulated the release of γ‐aminobutyric acid and carbohydrates. Potassium‐starved plants released less sugars, in particular glycerol, ribitol, fructose, and maltose, while under N deficiency lower amounts of amino acids were found in root exudates. Principal‐component analysis revealed a clear separation in the variation of the root‐exudate composition between Fe or P deficiency versus N or K deficiency in the first principal component, which explained 46% of the variation in the data. In addition, a negative correlation was found between the amounts of sugars, organic and amino acids released under deficiency of a certain nutrient and the diffusion coefficient of the respective nutrient in soils. We thus hypothesize that the release of dominant root exudates such as sugars, amino acids, and organic acids by roots may reflect an ancient strategy to cope with limiting nutrient supply.  相似文献

Two common species of lichens from southwestern Louisiana, Parmelia praesorediosa and Ramalina stenospora, were analyzed thrice over a period of 9 mo. Samples were analyzed for Th, Cs, Se, Hg, Cr, Ir, Ce, Sc, Rb, Fe, Zn, Co, Ta, Eu, K, and Sb. No statistical differences in concentration over the time interval studied were seen. However, discriminant analysis showed a significant (>90%) difference between elemental content and species. The data could be separated into two geographical areas that were statistically different. Highest concentrations were observed within a 10.8-km radius of the industrial/urban zone.  相似文献

  1. Removal of instream woody habitat (IWH) is one factor attributed to declines in fish populations worldwide. Restoration of IWH to help fish populations recover is now common; however, quantitative predictions about the outcomes of these interventions is rare. As such, quantitative links between IWH and fish abundance is of interest to managers to inform conservation and restoration activities.
  2. Links between instream habitat attributes, especially IWH, and selected fish species of recreational, cultural, and ecological significance were explored at 335 sites spanning eight streams across south‐eastern Australia. Data were collected on fish abundance and length, IWH density and a range of other habitat attributes at a scale that incorporated at least one of each of the major mesohabitat types (functional river elements). The data were analysed using Bayesian hierarchical generalized linear mixed models to examine fish habitat associations and used to make quantitative predictions of responses to future restoration.
  3. Strong positive relationships were found between fish abundance and IWH density and the strength of this relationship varied between species and waterways. Murray cod (Maccullochella peelii), a species commonly targeted by IWH interventions, displayed the strongest association with IWH density. River blackfish (Gadopsis marmoratus) also showed a significant relationship with IWH, but this effect was waterway specific. Fish length was only related to IWH for river blackfish. These results may reflect differences in the life histories of these two species. We suggest that differences in habitat association through ontogeny may be more relevant at smaller spatial scales.
  4. The results generated in this study can be used to guide waterway restoration and develop quantitative predictions about how fish might respond to IWH interventions across south‐eastern Australia. This approach provides a powerful quantitative framework within which to explore management options and objectives, and to test our predicted responses to habitat restoration.

HTRA1 promoter polymorphism in wet age-related macular degeneration   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Age-related macular degeneration (AMD), the most common cause of irreversible vision loss in individuals aged older than 50 years, is classified as either wet (neovascular) or dry (nonneovascular). Inherited variation in the complement factor H gene is a major risk factor for drusen in dry AMD. Here we report that a single-nucleotide polymorphism in the promoter region of HTRA1, a serine protease gene on chromosome 10q26, is a major genetic risk factor for wet AMD. A whole-genome association mapping strategy was applied to a Chinese population, yielding a P value of <10(-11). Individuals with the risk-associated genotype were estimated to have a likelihood of developing wet AMD 10 times that of individuals with the wild-type genotype.  相似文献

Soil nitrogen mineralization as affected by water and temperature interactions   总被引:10,自引:0,他引:10  
Summary The hypothesis that water and temperature interact to influence the rate of soil N mineralization was studied in laboratory incubation experiments with two contrasting soils. Small sample rings (10 mm tall, 50 mm diameter) were packed to uniform bulk density with 1–2 mm aggregates of Plano silt loam and Wacousta silty clay loam. Samples were brought to five different water potentials (–0.1, –0.33, –0.5, –1.0, –3.0 bars) using pressure-plate techniques, and the undisturbed sample rings were then incubated at 10–35°C for 3, 10 or 14 days. The concentration of soil exchangeable NH4 +-N and NO3 -N was measured at the end of each incubation period on replicate samples. The Q10 of N mineralization was approximately 2 for all tested water potentials. Soil N mineralization was linearly related to water content or log water potential, but no water-temperature interaction was evident. The Q10 was constant with water content, and the scaled water content-N mineralization relationship was constant with temperature. We recommend the use of scaling approaches for assessing interactive effects between water and other environmental factors on N turnover in soils.  相似文献

A series of studies were designed to examine the degree of variability in the digestibility of protein and energy from lupin (Lupinus angustifolius) kernel meals when fed to rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and the potential implications of this variability. The digestibility of protein and energy from 10 different varieties of lupin kernel meal was assessed where the test ingredient comprised 30% of each test diet. Digesta was collected using faecal stripping techniques. Digestible protein value ranged from 331 to 508 g/kg DM and digestible energy values ranged from 10.6 to 13.3 MJ/kg DM. To examine the implications of variability in digestible protein and energy value, two lupin kernel meals from the extremes of the protein digestibility range (Lupin-1: ADN ~ 70% and Lupin-2: ADN ~ 100%) were chosen for assessment in two growth studies. Soybean meal and a reference diet with fishmeal as the only protein source were also included in the study. In the first growth experiment the test ingredients were included at equal concentrations (40%) in protein-limiting diets (350 g protein/kg DM) and fed at either of two ration levels (restricted and satiety). Diets were formulated on a crude basis so as to place the test variable on the variability in digestible protein value of the diets. In the restricted-fed treatments growth of fish fed the reference diet was highest, but not significantly better than lupin-H. Growth of fish fed the lupin-L diet was significantly poorer than both the reference and lupin-H diets, but not poorer than the soybean diet. The growth responses observed from this experiment clearly showed that the differences in feed intake and/or digestible protein value could be demonstrated in terms of significant differences in growth outcomes. In a second growth study high-nutrient dense extruded diets (400 g protein/kg and 23.5 MJ/kg) were prepared with a more practical level of 25% inclusion of the same test materials. Again the diets were formulated on crude basis so as to place the test variable on the variability in digestible protein and energy value of the diets. Growth of fish restrictively fed the lupin-H diet was highest, but not significantly better than the soybean, reference or lupin-L treatments restrictively fed. Growth of fish satietal fed the soybean diet was significantly poorer than the reference and lupin-H diets, but not compared to the lupin-L diet. The growth responses observed from this experiment showed that the differences in digestible protein and energy value could not be demonstrated in terms of significant differences in growth outcomes, and that feed intake variability and excess nutrient supply masked the effect of this variability; particularly at the satietal feed intake levels.  相似文献

Quantitative changes in foliar chemistry in response to UV-B radiation are frequently reported but less is known about the qualitative changes in putative UV-screening compounds. It has also not been conclusively shown whether qualitative differences in screening compounds or differences in localization patterns influence the sensitivity of plants to damage from UV-B radiation and there is some question as to whether differences in the amounts of soluble screening compounds correlate with physiological sensitivity to UV-B radiation. This study represents the first part of a multiple-year study designed to answer the above questions. In this study we evaluated whether differences in soluble UV-screening compounds were linked with possible effects on gas exchange and photosynthetic carbon assimilation. Branches of mature trees of sweet gum (Liquidambar styraciflua), tulip poplar (Liriodendron tulipifera) and red maple (Acer rubrum) were exposed to supplemental levels of UV-B radiation over three growing seasons. Controls for UV-A were also measured by exposing branches to supplemental UV-A only and additional branches not irradiated were also used for controls. These species demonstrated differing levels of screening compounds with poplar being the most responsive in terms of epidermal accumulation of phenolics. These were separately identified as flavonols, chlorogenic acid and hydroxycinnamates (HCAs). Red maple had the highest levels of constitutive UV-absorbing compounds but these showed little response to supplemental UV-B radiation. Leaf area was marginally influenced by UV exposure level with both UV-A and UV-B tending to reduce leaf area in red maple and poplar and increase it in sweet gum, when averaged over the 3-year period. Assimilation was generally not reduced by UV-B radiation in these species and was enhanced in red maple by both UV-B and UV-A and by UV-A in sweet gum. These findings are consistent with a hypothesis that epidermal attenuation of UV-B would only be reduced in poplar, which accumulated the additional epidermal screening compounds. It is possible that photosynthetic efficiency was enhanced in red maple by the increased absorption of blue light within the mesophyll due to elevated levels of HCAs. Stomatal conductance was generally reduced and this led to an increase in water use efficiency (WUE) in red maple and poplar. Since few detrimental effects of supplemental UV-B were observed, these results suggest that these tree species utilized a range of UV-screening compounds and deposition patterns to achieve UV-B tolerance and further, that subtle responses to UV-B could have ecological significance in the absence of reduced productivity or photosynthetic efficiency.  相似文献
