Increased tourist activity and recreational use of wilderness and other protected areas has endangered zones of high environmental value. The aim of this work was to evaluate the effects of trampling intensity (low, high use trails and untrampled trails) and distance from the trails (on the trails, at 10 and 20 m from the trails) on the vegetation, chemical, physical and microbiological properties of a soil in Mediterranean mountain areas. Trail type and distance from the trail significantly influenced several parameters. High use trails showed lower values of plant cover and diversity of vegetation species, as well as soil respiration and some enzyme activities (phosphatase, β‐glucosidase and dehydrogenase) than low use trails. In addition, the effects of trampling spatially extended further from these high use trails than from low use trails. Statistical analysis showed that some microbiological (basal respiration, dehydrogenase activity and β‐glucosidase activity) and vegetal parameters (plant cover and diversity) may be established as a set of indicators for the evaluation of soil quality on these areas subjected to human trampling. We concluded that trampling significantly impacts on soil microbial processes and vegetal communities, and visitor should be restricted from entering ecologically sensitive areas due to the effects of trampling. The current land use system in the anthropogenic savannas (Espinales) of the Mediterranean climate region of Chile, has resulted in considerable heterogeneity at the landscape level which is associated with different covers of the legume tree, Acacia caven. The effects of landscape heterogeneity on the diversity and productivity of herbaceous plant communities were studied in 29 plots of 1000 m2, with a wide range of woody cover. A detrended correspondence analysis of the species × plots matrix explained 73% of the total variation and revealed the existence of two trends of variation in floristic composition: one associated with physiographic position (hillsides and flatlands) and the other related to the number of years since the last cutting, or coppicing, of A. caven. Despite the great majority of the original herbaceous species having disappeared as a result of the prevailing land use system, some native species have been able to survive especially on hillside areas with low grazing intensity. Woody cover was a good indicator of spatial heterogeneity and land use history. It was also correlated with stocking rate, above-ground biomass of herbaceous vegetation, and soil fertility (organic matter, nitrogen and phosphorus concentration), both on hillsides and flatlands. The relationship between woody cover and herbaceous plant species richness was significant and unimodal in flat land areas, and linear, and marginally significant, on hillsides. The consequences of land use changes on the conservation of the ecological and productive values of grasslands are analyzed.  相似文献

In order to analyze the dynamics of growth, water and K uptake, the effects of 1, 3 and 7 days of potassium starvation and the recovery capability during 7 days afterwards were investigated in vegetative tomato plants. After 7 days of K starvation, plant dry matter was reduced by 36% compared to control plants. After 3 days of starvation plants showed a 15% reduction in dry matter and a 25% reduction in growth rate (not statistically significant). K starvation reduced leaf area and specific leaf area (SLA) and it increased leaf dry matter percentage. K starvation enhanced dry matter partitioning into the roots at the expense of the stem. Plant K concentration was reduced by K starvation with the strongest effect in the leaves and roots. When a 3-day K starvation period was followed by 7 days of recovery with full strength nutrient solution, growth and plant K concentration completely recovered, but not after 7 days of K starvation. Xylem sap flow was reduced by K starvation and after 7 days of starvation the K concentration in the sap was reduced by 60%. During the starvation period, the reduction in relative growth rate was linearly related to the plant K concentration. The critical potassium concentration in the plant (the K concentration at which relative growth rate was reduced by 10%) was determined according to the nutrient interruption technique. The critical concentration was 4.3% K which was reached after 2.5 days of K starvation while the potassium concentration of control plants was 6.3%. During recovery the dry matter growth rate seemed to be the most important factor determining K uptake.  相似文献

Introduction: West Nile virus (WNV) first appeared in the United States in 1999, causing illness and death in birds, horses, and humans. While the initial outbreak of this sometimes deadly viral disease was limited to the northeastern United States, the virus had an inexorable migration across the continental United States over the next 3 years, causing huge losses among the affected species. The purpose of this review is to present currently available information regarding the epi‐demiology, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of WNV infection. Veterinarians, particularly those in an emergency practice, serve as an important source of reliable information regarding this disease for animal owners and the public in general. Data sources: Data sources used for the preparation of this review include computer‐based searches of PubMed and Commonwealth Agricultural Bureaux (CAB) abstracts. A search in PubMed using ‘West Nile’ retrieved 1468 ‘hits’ or references, while a similar search in CAB abstracts produced 815 references. Additional information was obtained from various meeting proceedings, particularly data presented in abstract form, and from the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) website dedicated to WNV. Human data synthesis: Prior to the mid‐1990s, reported large‐scale epidemics of WNV infection in humans predominantly presented as acute, mild, febrile disease, sometimes associated with lymphadenopathy and skin rash. The recent large epidemic in the United States, in contrast, has prominently featured encephalitis, particularly among the elderly. Additionally, polio‐encephalomyelitis‐like complications resulting in long‐term neurologic sequelae have been reported. There are many WNV‐permissive native avian and mosquito hosts in the Unites States and there appear to be few limitations to the spread of the disease in the United States. It is expected that the virus will be identified in all 48 continental states, Mexico, and Canada by the end of 2003. Veterinary data synthesis: The horse is the animal species most affected by the recent WNV epidemic in the United States, and losses to the equine industry have been large and unprecedented. A United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)‐approved vaccine against WNV has been in use in horses since 2001 and appears to be effective in limiting the incidence of disease in well‐vaccinated populations. WNV infection has been documented in other species of mammals, including camelids (alpaca/llamas) and dogs, and veterinarians should include WNV as a differential diagnosis for animals presenting with clinical signs consistent with central nervous system infection. A large concern exists for endangered bird populations, particularly birds of prey, whether in zoos or in the wild.  相似文献

The influence of film barrier properties on the quality loss of minimally processed grapes stored at 5 °C was addressed. Table grapes (Vitis vinifera cv. Italia) differing in quantity and frequency of irrigation, were tested with five different packaging films. Two commercially available films were used: a multilayer film obtained by laminating nylon and a polyolefin layer (NP), an oriented polypropylene film (OPP), along with three biodegradable polyester-based films (NVT-100, NVT-50 and NVT-35). The packed grape quality during storage was determined by monitoring the headspace oxygen and carbon dioxide concentration, the grape sensory qualities, and the viable cell concentration of the following spoilage microorganisms: total viable bacterial count, lactic acid bacteria, yeasts and molds. All the investigated films successfully preserved the quality of packed produce for the entire observation period (35 d). However, the best results were obtained using high barrier films such as NP and NVT-100. Slight differences were recorded between the two sets of table grapes in terms of respiratory activity and sensory quality.  相似文献

The susceptibility of Fortune (Citrus clementina × Citrus reticulata), Citrus paradisi and Citrus limon fruits to Alternaria alternata pv. citri was investigated using different artificial inoculation methods. The results obtained reveal that the C. paradisi and C. limon fruits are less susceptible to A. alternata pv. citri than Fortune fruits, although all showed symptoms of Alternaria brown spot when the cuticle was broken and the flavedo or flavedo + albedo was removed. Furthermore, it was seen that susceptibility to the fungus decreased as the age of the fruit increased. There was a positive correlation between the susceptibility of the different Citrus fruits to A. alternata pv. citri and their “in vivo” ethylene levels, the most susceptible fruit (Fortune) producing more ethylene during growth than the less susceptible C. limon and C. paradisi. This suggests that ethylene may well be considered as a possible marker of Citrus fruit susceptibility to A. alternata pv. citri. Disease development increased when the Fortune fruits were treated with 1 mM ACC (a precursor of ethylene biosynthesis) or 1 mM Ethephon (an ethylene-releasing compound) prior to inoculation with A. alternata pv. citri. The role of ethylene as a factor involved in disease development is discussed.  相似文献

The antifungal activity of hexanoic acid on the phytopathogen Botrytis cinerea was studied. This chemical inhibited both spore germination and mycelial growth in vitro in a concentration‐ and pH‐dependent manner, and stopped spore germination at a very early stage, preventing germ‐tube development. The minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) for in vitro spore germination was 16 mm . Hexanoic acid also inhibited in vitro mycelial growth of germinated spores at an MFC of 12 mm . Studies performed to characterize the mechanisms underlying the antimicrobial effect of hexanoic acid showed that it alters fungal membrane permeability. In addition, hexanoic acid treatment increased the levels of spermine, spermidine, putrescine and cadaverine in B. cinerea mycelia. Spray application of hexanoic acid at fungicidal concentrations on 4‐week‐old tomato plants prior to fungal inoculation reduced necrosis diameter by approximately 60%. Application of the same hexanoic acid concentrations on previously infected plants reduced further necrosis expansion by around 30%. The results suggest that this chemical acts as a preventive and curative fungicide. Interestingly, treatments with hexanoic acid at concentrations below the MFC in hydroponic solution prior to fungal inoculation significantly reduced necrosis area. These results suggest an inducer effect of plant responses for hexanoic acid treatments at these concentrations. Hexanoic acid is a good candidate for safe antifungal treatments for the control of B. cinerea, which is responsible for many economic losses on fruits, vegetables and flowers.  相似文献

BACKGROUND: The activity of the major digestive cysteine proteinase detected in the intestinal tract of larvae of the bean weevil, Acanthoscelides obtectus (Say), was efficiently inhibited by the well-characterized cysteine proteinase synthetic inhibitor E-64 and also by a recombinant form of chagasin (r-chagasin), a tight-binding cysteine proteinase inhibitor protein from Trypanosoma cruzi. RESULTS: Incorporation of r-chagasin into an artificial diet system at 0.1 g kg(-1) retarded growth rate, decreased larval survival and led to complete mortality of A. obtectus at the end of the trial. The observed differences in growth rates occurred particularly in the first and second development stages. Artificial seeds containing high levels of r-chagasin (0.5-30 g kg(-1)) completely inhibited larval penetration. CONCLUSION: Together, the results reported in this paper support the hypothesis that the inhibitory activity of r-chagasin towards the major insect gut cysteine proteinase in vitro and in vivo is an accurate prediction of its insecticidal effects. The selectivity of this inhibitor against insect digestive proteinases supports the key role in parasite virulence by affecting the endogenous proteinase activity in its natural host.  相似文献

Two experimental watersheds, La Tejería (1.69 km2) and Latxaga (2.07 km2), appointed by the Government of Navarre (Spain) for assessing the effect of agricultural activities on the environment, were monitored during 10 years (1996-2005). Both watersheds are roughly similar with regard to soils, climate (humid sub Mediterranean) and land use (almost completely cultivated with winter grain crops). The first results for both sites on runoff, exported sediment, nitrate and phosphate are presented.Most runoff, sediment, nitrate and phosphate yields were generated during winter, when variability was also the highest of the whole year.La Tejería had much higher sediment concentrations and sediment yield than Latxaga. Nitrate concentrations were also significantly higher at La Tejería, with values constantly over the critical threshold (>50 mg NO3 l−1). However, phosphate concentrations were similar in both watersheds and corresponded to water with a significant risk of eutrophication. Differences in watershed behaviour could be mainly due to differences in morphology, topography, and amount of stream channel vegetation between both sites.This is an unprecedented research for the region and the generated dataset is of paramount importance for research issues such as hydrology, erosion and water quality. The results highlight the complexity of Mediterranean agricultural landscapes and the need for further analyses to better ascertain the processes behind them.  相似文献
