Postdevelopment thinkers and writers have critiqued development discourse for its role in perpetuating inequality. In water, sanitation and hygiene (WASH) literature and interventions, the discourse used perpetuates inequality through classing anything other than private toilets as ‘without sanitation’. This implies that the people who use forms of hygiene and sanitation relying on collective toilets and alternative strategies are somehow unhygienic. Yet residents of Xining (Qinghai Province, China) rely on hygiene assemblages that do not always include private toilets, but nonetheless still work to guard health for families with young children. In this paper, I develop a postdevelopment approach to hygiene and sanitation starting with the place‐based hygiene realities already working to guard health in some way, then working to multiply possibilities for future discursive and material hygiene realities.  相似文献

Summary Gene pyramiding in Phaseolus vulgaris is being utilized to develop more effective resistance to the temperature-insensitive-necrosis-inducing (TINI) strains of Bean Common Mosaic Virus (BCMV) present in the USA. Our data indicate that contrary to previous work, the bc-3 gene is effective against these strains in the absence of the strain unspecific bc-u gene in genotypes possessing the I gene. The epistatic bc-3 gene interferes with traditional efforts to pyramid the other recessive resistance genes by masking their activity. Indirect selection based on markers linked to the other recessive resistance genes would likewise be ineffective without the ability to also select for the bc-u gene which is required for expression of the bc-2 2 gene in germplasm carrying the I gene. Because the most resistant genotype (I, bc-u, bc-I 2, bc-22, bc-3) can only be introduced into a wide range of germplasm through the use of molecular markers linked to the different resistance genes, the search for a marker linked to the strain unspecific bc-u gene should also be given priority.  相似文献

Summary A knowledge of the biological and functional relationships among traits would be of benefit to plant breeders in the choice of traits to use for increasing efficiency of selection in a breeding program. Principal factor analysis was used to identify biological and functional relationships among dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) traits in segregating populations of a phenotypic recurrent selection program designed to introduce upright architecture into medium-sized dry bean.Two biological interpretations were assigned to factors extracted in the analysis of four seed/pod traits. The first was a size factor, loaded with seed weight and pod width, and the second a number factor, which was loaded with number of seeds per pod and pod length. Similarly, three factors were extracted from the analysis of fifteen architectural traits. The first factor was interpreted as an elongation factor, and was loaded with internode length measurements, while the second factor was interpreted as a structural factor, and was further divided into two subclasses namely, sturdiness factor and profile factor. The sturdiness factor comprised hypocotyl diameter and hypocotyl length, while the profile factor comprised branch angle and number of basal branches. The third factor which was called a reproductive factor was loaded with pod distribution traits and the number and location of nodes on which pods were borne.  相似文献

Twenty monosubstituted phenylsulfamates (cyclamates) have been synthesized and have had their taste portfolios determined. These have been combined with 63 compounds already in the literature to give a database of 83 ortho, meta, and para compounds. A training set of 75 compounds was randomly selected leaving eight compounds as a test set. A series of nine predictors determined with Corey-Pauling-Koltun models, calculated from the PC SPARTAN PRO program and Hammett sigma values taken mainly from the literature, have been used to establish structure-taste relationships for these types of sweeteners. The taste panel data for all compounds were categorized into three classes, namely, sweet (S), nonsweet (N), and sweet/nonsweet (N/S), and a novel "sweetness value" or weighting was also calculated for each compound. Linear and quadratic discriminant analysis were first used with the S, N, and N/S data, but the results were somewhat disappointing. Classification and regression tree analysis using the sweetness values for all 75 compounds was more successful, and only 14 were misclassified and six of the eight test set compounds were correctly classified. For the 29 meta compounds, one subset using just two parameters classified 83% of these compounds. Finally, using various methods, predictions were made on the likely tastes of a number of meta compounds and a striking agreement was found between the tree prediction and those given by earlier models. This appears to offer a strong vindication of the tree approach.  相似文献

Using both field and laboratory measurements of CO2 evolution as an index of decomposer activity, forest microcosms were used to evaluate the impact of simulated acidic precipitation on decomposition. The following pH treatments: 5.7, 4.5, 4.0, and 3.5 annual average were applied for a 30 mo period. No statistically significant effect of treatment on decomposition could be found in the field measurements. When the microcosm was partitioned into 01 and 02 litter, mineral soil (A and B horizons), and roots within the mineral soil horizons for laboratory determination of CO2 efflux, only the 02 litter exhibited a statistically significant decrease as a function of treatment. The data collected do not allow a complete evaluation of the potential impact of this decrease. However, efflux of CO2 from the 02 layer was small compared to the other layers, and this may account for the failure to detect a significant response in the field measurements. Although the field data did not exhibit a significant response, there is sufficient question concerning the 02 response to warrant additional investigation, especially since many plants derive a major portion of their nutritional requirements directly from the 02 litter layer.  相似文献

Toxicity of various animal wastes, after mixing with deionized water, for 1 and 24 hr, was measured using Photobacterium phosphoreum. The EC50 values determined by the ‘microtox’ toxicity test showed that the aqueous extracts of all animal wastes were toxic and the toxicity increased in the order: cattle, horse, sheep, pig and poultry. The observed toxicity was found not to be influenced by the amount of kjeldahl-N, NO3 or NH4 present in the waste-extract.  相似文献

Augmentation of small rare species populations is sometimes suggested on genetic grounds. However, outbreeding depression via dilution of local adaptation or break-up of genomic coadaptation may occur. These effects depend on the causes of population divergence. Here, we compare genetic measures of population divergence in Liatris scariosa var. novae-angliae, a rare New England perennial. We measured GST, neutral marker subdivision, and QST, quantitative subdivision of propagule and juvenile plant traits. GST was relatively high. QST for leaf shape exceeded GST, indicating local adaptation, while QST for other traits fell within or below the GST range. Local adaptation appears low for juvenile traits, although the high GST cautions against translocation because of potential coadaptation. If translocation is still required, however, donor populations should contain high quantitative genetic diversity. We assess population size and allozyme diversity as predictors of quantitative genetic variation, but find these poor proxies for direct measurement.  相似文献

Winkler extractors, a simple device presumed to extract macro-invertebrates efficiently from soil and litter samples, is being used increasingly in ecological surveys and functional studies of soil macro-invertebrate communities. In this study the extraction efficiency and taxonomic bias of the Winkler extraction are evaluated for extraction periods of 3 h up to 7 weeks, calibrated by hand-sorting after 7 weeks. The method extracts most macro-invertebrates completely or to a proportion of over 90% except Isopoda, Diplopoda and Mollusca. However, for an exhaustive result, a long extraction period of several weeks is necessary. For the most speciose group (adult beetles) and for the commonly most abundant group (ants), a short extraction of 3 days was sufficient to get 70% of the individuals and nearly all species. Three days was also sufficient to recover the rank abundance order of beetle families, while for ‘higher taxa’ and for Chilopoda species, 4 and 3 weeks were necessary, respectively. Optimum extraction times for the abundant macro-invertebrate groups and possible adjustment factors for the soil macro-invertebrates of temperate woodlands are proposed to compensate the taxonomic bias caused by short extraction periods. However, for recording an accurate snapshot of the soil and litter fauna at a particular time, shorter extraction periods are advisable because of the short life cycle of many soil invertebrates causing emergence of later stages or a second generation during longer extraction periods. The problem of contamination of samples is also discussed.  相似文献

The use of agrochemicals, such as mineral fertilizers and herbicides in agricultural systems, may affect the potential of soils to act as a sink for methane. Typically, the effect of each agrochemical on soil methane oxidation is investigated separately whereas in the field these agrochemicals are used together to form one comprehensive land management system. Here we report the results of field experiments that assessed the combined effect of multiple fertilizer and herbicide (nicosulfuron, dimethenamide and atrazine) applications on the soil methanotrophic community. Soils treated with organic fertilizer had three times higher methane oxidation rates compared to soils receiving mineral fertilizers. These higher oxidation rates were positively reflected in a significantly enhanced abundance of methanotrophs for the organic fertilized soils. In contrast, herbicide application did not alter significantly the soil methane oxidation rate or the methane-oxidizing population abundance. Subsequently, the methanotrophic community structure was analyzed with group-specific DGGE of 16S rRNA genes. Cluster analysis of the methanotrophic patterns clearly separated the mineral from organically fertilized soils. Less pronounced clustering differentiated between chemical and manual weed control. Furthermore, cluster analysis of the methanotrophic community revealed that soil type was the primary determinant of the community structure. Our results indicate that fertilizer type had the greatest influence on methane oxidizer activity and abundance. Soil type had the most pronounced effect on the microbial community structure.  相似文献

In New Zealand, the endemic kaki or black stilt (Himantopus novaezelandiae) has been the focus of intensive conservation management for the past 20 years. Threatened by predation and habitat loss, the population fell to as low as 23 birds before management was implemented to reverse the decline. Predator trapping has been one form of management intervention in the wild, yet despite 20 years of control, there is only limited evidence to suggest that predator trapping is beneficial for the survival of kaki. Lack of adequate experimental design and understanding of the predator-prey dynamics in the system in which kaki live appear to be the main reasons why the benefits of predator control are not consistently clear. An adaptive management approach would have provided more information on the efficacy of predator trapping and increased understanding of the inter-relationships between kaki survival and predator abundance.  相似文献
