The absorption of T2 gas by several grassland soils was measured in situ using a small chamber. The deposition velocity for the process ranged from 0.01 to 0.1 cm s?1, and varied more with season than with soil type or temperature of the soil surface. Laboratory and field experiments showed that the soil, and not the vegetation, was the sink for T2. The T2 lost from the air was readily available in soil water. Deposition to sea water was also measured. The sea surface was found to be a negligible sink in comparison to soil. The dose rate to people living near a release of T2 gas to the atmosphere, due to contamination of food and water, is estimated to be about one-eighth of that which would be caused by an equal release of HTO vapor. 相似文献

Seeds of bread wheat were incubated at 40 degrees C and 100% relative humidity for 0, 3, 4, 6, and 10 days. The effects of accelerated aging on seed germinability and some biochemical properties of flour (carotenoid, free radical, and protein contents and proteolytic activity) and gluten (free radical content and flexibility) were investigated. Seed germinability decreased during aging, resulting in seed death after 10 days. A progressive decrease of carotenoid content, in particular, lutein, was observed, prolonging the incubation, whereas the free radical content increased in both flour and gluten. A degradation of soluble and storage proteins was found, associated with a marked increase of proteolytic activity and a loss of viscoelastic properties of gluten. On the contrary, puroindolines were quite resistant to the treatment. The results are discussed in comparison with those previously obtained during accelerated aging of durum wheat seeds. 相似文献

The usual media and procedures were followed to measure the concentration of fecal streptococci (MPN on Azide Dextrose and Ethyl Violet Azide broths, membrane filtration on m-Enterococcus, KF and Pfizer Selective Enterococcus agars and according to the mE procedure) in samples collected along two different marine areas. The results were evaluated on the basis of three parameters: total concentrations, number of enterococci-like colonies (namely colonies gram positive, catalase negative, coccus shaped) and rate of strictly named fecal streptococci. From the results it appears that the various media and procedures employed gave different yields and their capacity to measure fecal streptococci varies according to the origin of samples. The accompanying bacterial flora may play an important role on the selectivity of each technique to measure the fecal streptococci. 相似文献

Abstract. Dryland salinity in the Mt Lofty Ranges, South Australia has developed as a result of native vegetation being replaced with pastures that use less water. Groundwaters have risen and mobilized ions (sodium, chloride, sulphate and iron) stored within deeply weathered micaceous sandstones and schists. Salinity resulting from sodium chloride is common in agricultural catchments around Australia, but saline sulphidic soils (with sulphate and iron) have only been studied in South Australia. Salinity is also associated with waterlogging and secondary sodicity. The amelioration of dryland salinity and waterlogging involves management of whole catchments, not just the area that is currently saline. It is imperative that all processes operating in saline catchments and their interactions are clearly understood.

Using soil diagnostic features, soil-water processes in saline catchments are easily identified by farmers and land managers. Management options (e.g. fencing, tree planting and drainage) are then targeted to specific soils and can be easily incorporated by agricultural advisers into farm management plans. Effects of fungal inocula on the decomposition of lignin and structural polysaccharides in Pinus sylvestris litter 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2
Litter bags containing sterile Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris) needles (19.8% lignin, 26.5% cellulose and 0.34% N) were inoculated with two species of fungi in the laboratory and then
placed in the litter layer of a pine plantation. Marasmius androsaceus, which can degrade lignocellulose, was initially displaced by other fungal colonisers and was not detected in the litter
after 2–3 months; but was re-isolated from the needles after 12 months. Trichoderma viride, which is a cellulolytic species and also antagonistic to other fungi, dominated the litter throughout the experiment. The
control litter was naturally colonised by litter fungi. After 12 months, mass losses were similar at 52% for M. androsaceus and 48% for T. viride, compared with 36% for the control litter colonised by a more complex fungal community. Lignin concentrations increased with
time in control litter and with T. viride because mass losses of carbohydrates were greater than those of lignin. Litter inoculated with M. androsaceus showed significant lignin decomposition throughout the experiment but cellulose concentrations showed a proportional increase
in the first 6 months, suggesting that the fungus was preferentially exploiting hemicellulose and non-structural carbohydrates.
Analysis of TFA-extractable sugars (mainly from hemicellulose) and CuO-derived phenylpropanoid moieties from lignin confirmed
the differential patterns of resource decomposition which were not evident from total mass losses. During the initial stages
of decomposition, T. viride was as effective in utilising structural polysaccharides as the complex fungal community in the control litter. Furthermore,
M. androsaceus not only exhibited unexpectedly low cellulolytic activity but also facilitated lignin depolymerisation after the fungus was
no longer detectable in the litter. The pre-inoculation of litter with these two fungal species therefore affected the overall
dynamics of decomposition at a biochemical level. This study illustrates the importance of understanding the effects and interactions
of specific fungi, rather than assumptions about the functional competence of diverse communities, on the processes of litter
decomposition.

In Britain wheat is an important crop accounting for 41% of the total cereal production. In this study ozone concentrations for 1989 estimated as described in Part 1 of the paper are integrated with the estimated wheat distribution to derive a detailed estimate of the impact of ozone on wheat yields at a fine spatial scale (1km × 1km). These data provide estimates for calculating regional and national yield losses. The methodology can be applied to other crop species. Recent research on a range of crops has established relationships between the economic yield loss for certain crops, including wheat, and ozone exposure. Exposure is described as the accumulated exposure above a threshold experienced during the daylight hours (AOT). Critical AOT values are derived from yield exposure relationships which show linear reductions of yield loss with increasing ozone concentrations. This study has made use of land cover data from remotely sensed imagery at 25m resolution and nationally collected agricultural statistics for counties. These data were combined using an areal interpolation technique to provide more spatially articulate estimates of the location and intensity of wheat production. The results demonstrate the economic importance of ozone as a pollutant. Wheat yield losses attributed to ozone vary between different parts of the country but, for years when ozone levels are high, yield losses are likely to be significant in some areas. 相似文献

Three major virgin olive oil varieties (Dritta, Leccino, and Coratina) extracted by a modern centrifugation system aided with a new plant enzyme preparation (having prevalently pectolytic activity) were characterized. These oils showed a clearly enhanced quality standard, owing to higher levels of some important minor components (phenolics, volatiles, tocopherols, carotenes, and chlorophylls) and to frequently lower concentrations of oxidized triglycerides and diglycerides. The oils were therefore characterized by lower susceptibility to oxidation and longer shelf life, and their flavor, aroma, and color features appeared to be significantly improved. The saponifiable fraction was practically not affected as the enzymatic effects involved only the membranes of the oil droplets, where the nonglyceridic compounds are essentially located. 相似文献

Eucharis grandiflora Planch. and Linden is a tropical climate Amaryllidacea, commonly known as lily, which develops a bulbous stem and is considered an indoor ornamental plant for its evergreen foliage and inflorescence. The aim of this study was to evaluate the vegetative development of the Lily, in response to the treatment with of the Steiner solution at different concentrations. The plants were acclimated under greenhouse conditions and the bulbs selected by a completely randomized design. Plants were treated with various concentrations of the Steiner solution, to develop the following potential osmotic: ?0.018, ?0.036, ?0.054, ?0.072, and 0 Mpal. The production of bulbils, development and leaf area, stomatal density, chlorophyll quantification, and osmotic potentials were evaluated. The results showed that treatment with solutions of ?0.054 and ?0.072 MPa induced a greater vegetative growth, 29.5% more stomata developed, and synthesized 29% more chlorophyll “b” than the control. 相似文献
