The use of an enriched CO2 atmosphere in tree nurseries has been envisaged as a promising technique to increase productivity and to obtain seedlings with a higher root/shoot ratio, an essential trait to respond to water stress in Mediterranean-type ecosystems. In that framework, we have analyzed the effects of three levels of atmospheric CO2 concentration (350, 500 and 700ppm) on the germination rate, growth and morphology of seedlings of two Mediterranean oaks used in reforestation programs: the evergreen Quercus ilex L. and the deciduous Quercus cerrioides Wilk. et Costa. CO2 enrichment increased the germination rate of Q. cerrioides (from 70±7 to 81±3%) while it decreased that of Q. ilex (from 71±10 to 41±12%). Seedlings of both species increased approximately 60% their total biomass in response to CO2 enrichment but at two different CO2 concentrations: 500ppm for Q. cerrioides and 700ppm for Q. ilex. This increase in seedlings biomass was entirely due to an augmentation of root biomass. Considering germination and biomass partitioning, an enriched CO2 atmosphere might not be appropriate for growing Mediterranean evergreen oaks, such as Q. ilex, since it reduces acorn germination and the only gains in root biomass occur at a high concentration (700ppm). On the other hand, a moderate CO2 enrichment (500ppm) appears as a promising nursery technique to stimulate the germination, growth and root/shoot ratio of deciduous oaks, such as Q. cerrioides. 相似文献

Buffaloes are generally raised in Brazil without milk‐recording programs, and thus without genetic evaluations of any of their traits. This study evaluated the economic impacts of three different selection strategies on buffalo populations and the evolution of genetic trends, genetic variances and inbreeding coefficients resulting from each of them. The selection strategies used were as follows: (i) random selection; (ii) phenotypic selection; and (iii) progeny testing (PT). As the numbers of herds enrolled in milk‐recording programs increased, phenotypic selection and PT strategies increased both monetary benefits and genetic trends. The extra costs of implementing milk recording (MR) and PT procedures were exceeded by the income resulting from better buffalo performance. Progeny testing is known to result in beneficial genetic trends and the use of artificial insemination promoted better distributions of genetic material into herds that were not enrolled in milk‐recording programs. Phenotypic selection and PT increased mean milk production ‐ a key factor in profitability. Inbreeding levels remained stable with phenotypic selection, even as the numbers of MR herds increased. Increases in the numbers of sires that were evaluated reduced the mean inbreeding coefficient in PT. Increasing the number of herds enrolled in milk‐recording programs resulted in increased numbers of sires needed for PT, but this did not increase the inbreeding coefficient. In summary, phenotypic selection and PT strategies appear to be economically viable for buffalo husbandry in south‐eastern Brazil under current (2007–2008) economic conditions and should be encouraged. 相似文献

A homologue of interleukin-8, viral interleukin-8 (vIL-8) has been identified in the genome of Marek's disease virus (MDV). This protein attracts peripheral blood mononuclear cells in vitro although its role in the pathogenesis of Marek's disease (MD) is not known. P chickens, genetically susceptible to MD, and N chickens, genetically resistant to the disease, were inoculated with either RB1B MDVor RB1BvIL-8smGFP, a vIL8 knockout RB1B MDV, to assess the role of vIL8 in the pathogenesis of MD. The tumor incidence was highest in the P birds given the RBIB virus, where the incidence was 100%. Tumor incidence in N birds given RB1B was 41.5%. Thirty-one percent of the P birds given RB1BvIL-8smGFP developed tumors, and no N bird given RB1BvIL-8smGFP developed tumors. Histologically, the tumors from RB1B-inoculated birds were larger and more invasive and had a more homogeneous cellular composition than those from RB1BvIL-8smGFP-inoculated birds, which were best described as microtumors. These microtumors did not obliterate the normal architecture of the tissues, and in contrast to the RBIB tumors, moderate numbers of heterophils were admixed with the proliferating lymphocytes. Susceptible birds receiving RB1B had the highest viral titers throughout the study, followed by the resistant birds inoculated with RB1B. P and N birds receiving RB1BvIL-8smGFP virus had consistently lower levels of viremia than their RB1B-inoculated counterparts although virus could be recovered from the birds during all stages of MD. In addition, the RB1BvIL-8smGFP virus was detected in birds held in contact with the inoculated group, although no tumors developed in contact control birds. This result indicates that RB1BvIL-8smGFP replicates in vivo but not as well as RB1B and that vIL8 is not essential for the completion of the pathogenesis of MD. 相似文献

Omphalitis associated with aspergillosis was diagnosed in four cases of commercial turkey poults ranging in age from 3 to 9 days old. In two cases, the mycotic agent present in the yolk sac was isolated and identified as Aspergillus fumigatus. In the other two cases, the fungi were identified as Aspergillus sp. on the basis of morphologic characteristics of the fungi in tissue sections. The fungi present were further confirmed to be of the genus Aspergillus by immunohistochemistry. Omphalitis by A. fumigatus infection has not been documented before. 相似文献

In the present study, we have followed up Leishmania infantum infection in dogs: (1) naturally infected; (2) experimentally infected with amastigotes; and (3) experimentally infected with culture promastigotes. The main objective was to evaluate the differences of the humoral and cellular immune responses of each group. Sera from 12 beagle dogs were analysed for total anti-leishmanial antibodies and IgG1 and IgG2 subclasses by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Lymphoproliferation to L. infantum antigen was also performed. All naturally infected animals were symptomatic with a marked humoral response. Dogs inoculated with amastigotes were asymptomotic and presented lower antibody titres than naturally infected. Dogs inoculated with culture promastigotes were asymptomotic with no significant humoral response. Strong proliferative responses to Leishmania antigen was observed in dogs inoculated with promastigotes. In our experimental model, IgG1 antibody levels presented a similar pattern in all infected animals, and IgG2 reactivity was high in naturally infected dogs. 相似文献

In two field trials (T1 and T2), the effect of two different extenders for buck semen was tested. Semen from six (T1) and seven (T2) bucks of the Norwegian Dairy Goat breed was diluted either in a milk‐based extender containing egg yolk (M) or in a commercially available extender without egg yolk [Andromed® (A)]. Dilution in M was performed in a two‐step procedure including centrifugation of the ejaculates and removal of the supernatant, while dilution in A was performed in one step. During the two trials (T1 and T2) 514 and 714, does, respectively, were artificially inseminated during natural oestrus, and the farmers performed the inseminations themselves after attending an artificial insemination (AI) training course. Vaginal insemination with 200 × 106 spermatozoa diluted in M resulted in a 25‐day non‐return rate (NRR) and kidding rate of 37.3% and 24.5%, respectively, while semen diluted in A resulted in 31.7% NRR and a kidding rate of 19.8% (T1). In T2, NRR and kidding rate for AI performed with semen diluted with M were 42.7% and 28.5%, respectively, while dilution in A gave 37.2% NRR and a kidding rate of 26.8%. There was no significant effect of extender in the two trials [T1:p = 0.068 (NRR), p = 0.148 (kidding rate), T2:p = 0.096 (NRR), p = 0.38 (kidding rate)], but farmer had a significant effect on the fertility parameters in both trials. In conclusion, the present studies may indicate that Andromed® is suitable for buck semen. However, more research is necessary to confirm the results and to improve the fertility of does after vaginal AI with frozen‐thawed semen. 相似文献

Three experiments were conducted with a total of 1579 ewes to examine reproductive performance in response to synchronization of oestrus during the breeding season, using controlled internal drug releasing (CIDR-G) inserts in regimens designed to provide high concentrations of circulating progesterone. In experiment 1, treatment with two CIDR-G inserts for 12 days produced conception rate (79%) and prolificacy (1.9) to first service equivalent to breeding at natural oestrus (56% and 2.0, respectively). Pregnancy rates to two service periods were 90 and 79%, respectively. In experiments 2 and 3, progesterone was delivered by a single CIDR-G insert for 5 days in combination with prostaglandin F2alpha (PGF2alpha; 5 mg i.m., twice, 3 h apart) the day before (experiment 2), or at insert removal (experiment 3). The combined treatments improved rates of synchronization of oestrus (p<0.01) by 23 and 20% points, respectively, and pregnancy rates to the first service period by 19 (p<0.05) and 13 (p<0.01) percentage points, respectively, compared to treatment with PGF2alpha alone. It is concluded that the combination of treatment for 5 days with a CIDR-G insert and two injections of 5 mg PGF2alpha, the day before, or the day of insert removal, were effective treatments to obtain high fertility at synchronized oestrus in ewes during the breeding season. 相似文献

An 18-month-old pregnant heifer, hitherto normal, was noticed to regurgitate wet, partially digested roughage several times a day. On clinical examination, the heifer was losing body weight. There was no obstacle to passing a stomach tube to the rumen. A barium study of the esophagus was performed. Megaesophagus involving the cervical and cranial thoracic esophagus was diagnosed. Postmortem findings were a dilated esophagus, with no gross pathology seen. Histopathology showed extensive submucosal cellular infiltration of eosinophils.
