(1) Background: The mussel (Mytilus edulis, Mytilus galloprovincialis) is the most widespread lamellibranch mollusk, being fished on all coasts of the European seas. Mussels are also widely grown in Japan, China, and Spain, especially for food purposes. This paper shows an original technique for mussel shell processing for preparation of calcium salts, such as calcium levulinate. This process involves synthesis of calcium levulinate by treatment of Mytilus galloprovincialis shells with levulinic acid. The advantage of mussel shell utilization results in more straightforward qualitative composition. Thus, the weight of the mineral component lies with calcium carbonate, which can be used for extraction of pharmaceutical preparations. (2) Methods: Shell powder was first deproteinized by calcination, then the mineral part was treated with levulinic acid. The problem of shells generally resulting from the industrialization of marine molluscs creates enough shortcomings, if one only mentions storage and handling. One of the solutions proposed by us is the capitalization of calcium from shells in the pharmaceutical industry. (3) Results: The toxicity of calcium levulinate synthesized from the mussel shells was evaluated by the method known in the scientific literature as the Constantinescu phytobiological method (using wheat kernels, Triticum vulgare Mill). Acute toxicity of calcium levulinate was evaluated; the experiments showed the low toxicity of calcium levulinate. (4) Conclusion: The experimental results highlighted calcium as the predominant element in the composition of mussel shells, which strengthens the argument of capitalizing the shells as an important natural source of calcium.  相似文献

As a result of recent changes in the Phytophthora infestans population in Great Britain, in particular the dominance of one genotype (13_A2) and the possible implications of this change on host resistance ratings, a coordinated programme of testing between SASA and JHI was initiated. Over 3 years of trials (2008–2010), 49 existing cultivars with published resistance ratings of 5 or greater on a 1–9 scale of increasing resistance, 42 new cultivars and a range of appropriate control cultivars were assessed using an isolate of the 13_A2 genotype of P. infestans. The mean resistance rating of 62% of the 49 existing cultivars was reduced by more than the maximum 5% LSD of 1.9. For some cultivars (e.g. Lady Balfour and Stirling), changes in resistance rating were specifically associated with the use of the 13_A2 genotype to inoculate the trials from 2008 onwards. The majority of the 42 new cultivars tested were susceptible to the 13_A2 genotype isolate, scoring 4 or less. However, cultivars with useful resistance were also identified with seven scoring 6 or 7. Published resistance ratings have been revised as a result of this study.  相似文献

The present field experiment was conducted during two consecutive cropping seasons in central Portugal to study the effects of simultaneous elevation of carbon dioxide concentration ([CO2]) (550 μmol mol?1) and air temperature (+2–3 °C) on japonica rice (Oryza sativa L. “Ariete”) yield, crop duration, and SPAD-values across the seasons compared with the open-field condition. Open-top chambers were used in the field to assess the effect of elevated air temperature alone or the combined effect of elevated air temperature and atmospheric [CO2]. Open-field condition was assessed with randomized plots under ambient air temperature and actual atmospheric [CO2] (average 382 μmol mol?1). Results obtained showed that the rice “Ariete” had a moderate high yielding under open-field condition, but was susceptible to air temperature rise of +2–3 °C under controlled conditions resulting in reduction of grain yield. The combined increase of atmospheric [CO2] with elevated air temperature compensated for the negative effect of temperature rise alone and crop yield was higher than in the open-field. SPAD-readings at reproductive stage explained by more than 60 % variation the straw dry matter, but this finding requires further studies for consolidation. It can be concluded that potential increase in air temperature may limit rice yield in the near future under Mediterranean areas where climate change scenario poses a serious threat, but long term field experiments are required.  相似文献

Summary Crosses were made between six parents differing in susceptibility to skin spot and glasshouse-grown tubers from true seedlings of the nine resulting progenies assessed for resistance to the disease. The assessment was evaluated by a two-year comparison with the behaviour of field-grown tubers of the progenies and their parents. The correlations between progenies in the glasshouse and field were r=0.911 and 0.753 and those between the mid-parental values and the progeny means were high (r>0.864), indicating that parental differences were heritable. It is concluded that correlations were sufficient for glasshouse-grown tubers to be used for assessing large numbers of progenies in genetical studies and for eliminating highly susceptible progenies at an early stage in a breeding programme. Analyses of a unique database containing sea lice records over an 11 year period provide evidence of changing infestation patterns in Scotland. The data, collected from more than 50 commercial Atlantic salmon farms, indicate that both species of sea lice commonly found in Scotland, Lepeophtheirus salmonis and Caligus elongatus, have declined on farms over the past decade. Reductions for both species have been particularly marked since 2001 when more effective veterinary medicines became available. Treatment data were also available in the database and these show a growing trend towards the use of the in-feed medication emamectin benzoate (Slice), particularly in the first year of the salmon production cycle. However, this trend towards single product use has not been sustained in 2006, the latest year for which data are available. There is some evidence of region to region variation within Scotland with the Western Isles experiencing higher levels of infestation. However, compared to the levels observed between 1996 and 2000, all regions have benefited from reduced lice infestation, with the overall pattern showing a particular reduction in the second and third quarters of the second year of production.  相似文献

Adherence to vascular endothelium and extracellular matrix proteins is a pre-requisite for neutrophil accumulation at sites of inflammation. In this study, equine neutrophil adherence to fibronectin and autologous serum-coated plastic in response to PAF, hrIL-8, hrC5a and PMA has been measured. In addition, the mechanisms involved have been investigated using monoclonal antibodies (MoAbs) against the beta2 integrin CD18. PAF and hrC5a caused similar, concentration dependent, increases in adherence to fibronectin- and serum-coated plastic (maximum responses 19 +/- 4% and 19 +/- 3% for PAF and 15 +/- 4% and 16 +/- 2% for hrC5a on fibronectin- and serum-coated plastic, respectively). Adherence in response to PMA, although not reaching a maximum over the time course studied, was of a similar magnitude on the two surfaces (41 +/- 1% and 38 +/- 2% with 10(-7) M PMA on fibronectin- and serum-coated plastic, respectively). In contrast, the maximum adherence caused by hrIL-8 was significantly lower on fibronectin- than on serum-coated plastic (9 +/- 3% vs. 17 +/- 2%; 10(8) x M hrIL-8). Pre-incubation with MoAbs against CD18 (H20A and 6.5E) caused concentration related inhibition of stimulus-induced adherence to both fibronectin- and serum-coated plastic. Equine neutrophil adherence in response to PAF, hrIL-8, hrC5a and PMA therefore appears to be mediated by a CD18 dependent mechanism.  相似文献

Two consecutive 24-hour quantitative urinalyses were performed on each of 12 healthy adult cats to evaluate the technique and obtain reference values for measurements of urinary excretion of several substances. Endogenous creatinine clearance (2.31 +/- 0.47 ml/min/kg) and urinary protein excretion (17.43 +/- 9.05 mg/kg/day) were determined. Additionally, clearances and ratios to creatinine clearances were calculated for phosphate, sodium, potassium, and chloride. The endogenous creatinine clearance value was compared with another estimate of glomerular filtration rate that was based on 99mTc(Sn) diethylene-triaminepentaacetic acid clearance (2.52 +/- 0.58 ml/min/kg). Evaluation of feline renal function, using 24-hour quantitative urinalysis techniques, has potential for clinical application, but has several important limitations as well.  相似文献

Controlled‐environment and field experiments were done to quantify the individual contribution of seed‐tuber and soilborne inoculum of Colletotrichum coccodes in causing black dot disease of potato tubers. Seed‐tuber and soilborne inocula of C. coccodes were quantified using an existing real‐time PCR assay and related to subsequent incidence and severity of disease. In four field trials, a controlled‐environment experiment and through the monitoring of 122 commercial crops, seed‐tuber inoculum was found to be relatively less important than soilborne inoculum in causing black dot, and the level of seed‐tuber inoculum did not significantly affect either the incidence or severity of disease or the percentage of progeny tubers deemed unmarketable. By contrast, soilborne inoculum had the potential to result in high levels of disease and the level of C. coccodes soil infestation (pg DNA g?1 soil) was found to have a significant effect. At soil infestation levels below 100 pg DNA C. coccodes g?1 soil, 7% of commercial crops had an incidence of black dot greater than 20%, increasing to 40% and 57% of crops at levels of 100–1000 pg g?1 and >1000 pg g?1 soil, respectively. These arbitrary threshold levels for soilborne inoculum related to disease risk are discussed. Interpretation of disease risk based on inoculum levels must, in the future, be informed by agronomic variables and potential control strategies.  相似文献
