Sediment deposited in traps positioned along a sewage-impacted wetland receiving phosphorus (P)-retaining reactants from natural wetland water was fractionated into different particle sizes, and the amount of P retained in these particle sizes was investigated. Subsamples of the sediments collected from different sites along the wetland system were also equilibrated with water at different water:sediment ratios and equilibration periods to investigate the extent of P released from these sediments under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Results obtained showed that most of P deposited in sediments is in fine fractions (<16 µm), particularly in sediments collected from confluence sites where water inflow from the natural wetland provides P-retaining reactants and from sites immediately below these confluence sites (postconfluence sites). The extent of P release from sediments depended on the aerobic-anaerobic conditions of the sediments, equilibration period, water:sediment ratio and the position of sites within the wetland. The rate of P released from sediments associated with an increase in equilibration period tended to be higher under aerobic than anaerobic conditions. Water:sediment ratio was found to be a more important factor in controlling the release of P from sediments under anaerobic than aerobic conditions. The amount of P released from the confluence and postconfluence sites was higher than that from other sites over a range of equilibration periods and water:sediment ratios under aerobic and anaerobic conditions.  相似文献

OBJECTIVE: To examine the contribution to fruit and vegetable eating in children of potential predictive variables within the domains of demographics, parental feeding practices and personality traits. DESIGN: Cross-sectional survey. SETTING: Questionnaires were distributed to parents through 22 London nursery schools. SUBJECTS: Questionnaires were completed and returned by 564 parents or principal caregivers of 2-6-year-old children. RESULTS: Significant predictors of children's fruit and vegetable intake emerged from all three domains examined. Demographic variables associated with child's vegetable consumption were mother's education and child's age and gender. Only ethnicity was significantly associated with fruit consumption. Parental consumption, breast-feeding and early introduction to fruit and vegetables were related to intake of both. Family meal times were associated with higher intake of vegetables, but not of fruit. Two characteristics of children themselves (food neophobia and enjoyment of food) were strongly related to the consumption of fruit and vegetables. Subsequent multivariate analyses revealed that parental intake and child food neophobia independently predicted intake of both foods. In the presence of these, fruit consumption was affected by breast-feeding and early introduction to fruit, whereas vegetable consumption was related only to child's gender and enjoyment of food. CONCLUSIONS: These findings may be used to inform future interventions aimed at increasing children's consumption of fruit and vegetables. Parents should be made aware of the possible impact of their own behaviour on the eating habits of their children.  相似文献

Ethanol multiplies miniature end-plate potential frequency independently of calcium ion concentrations and also multiplies calcium-dependent depolarization-evoked quantal release, to the same extent. This result implies a final common pathway, requiring little or no calcium, for both kinds of transmitter secretion. Chlorpromazine and hypertonicity act similarly to ethanol, but also depress depolarization-secretion coupling.  相似文献

"Dark beams" are nonuniform optical beams that contain either a one-dimensional (1D) dark stripe or a two-dimensional (2D) dark hole resulting from a phase singularity or an amplitude depression in their optical field. Thus far, self-trapped dark beams (dark solitons) have been observed using coherent light only. Here, self-trapped dark incoherent light beams (self-trapped dark incoherent wavepackets) were observed. Both dark stripes and dark holes nested in a broad partially spatially incoherent wavefront were self-trapped to form dark solitons in a host photorefractive medium. These self-trapped 1D and 2D dark beams induced refractive-index changes akin to planar and circular dielectric waveguides. The experiments introduce the possibility of controlling high-power coherent laser beams with low-power incoherent light sources such as light emitting diodes.  相似文献

Barley and wheat crops were both sprayed at growth stages 30 and 61–75 with boom-mounted conventional hydraulic nozzles (250 ?/ha), experimental hydraulic electrostatic nozzles (66 ?/ha), electrically driven spinning discs (2 ?/ha, oil-based sprays and 5 ?/ha, aqueous spray) and ‘Electrodyn’ nozzles (1 and 2 ?/ha, oil). The ULV spray systems (up to 5 ?/haS) were used with or without air assistance. The distribution of both oil and aqueous sprays within the crops was measured with fluorescent tracers on plant parts and on whole plants. An experimental triazole fungicide (mixed with tracer) was applied to the crops by all the spray systems and the degree of control of leaf blotch (scald) caused by Rhynchosporium secalis (Oudem.) J.J. Davis in barley and mildew (Erysiphe graminis DC) in wheat compared with the deposit data. The two highest-volume spray systems gave similar results for disease control and there was no significant difference between the charged and uncharged sprays at 66 ?/ha. The Micron Ulva spinning disc and ‘Electrodyn’ systems with air assistance also performed well. Unassisted ULV sprays were often unevenly distributed within the crops and gave inferior disease control. The ‘Electrodyn’ system often produced large total deposits relative to other spray systems but unassisted sprays were mainly deposited on the upper plant parts. The results indicate that application at volumes as low as 1 ?/h can be as biologically effective as conventional high-volume spraying, when compared at the same dose rate of fungicide (90 g/ha). Relationships between spray distribution within cereals and the sites for pest and disease attack are discussed with regard to different methods of application.  相似文献
