Littoral microcrustacean (Ctenopoda, Anomopoda, Onchyopoda) samples, aquatic macrophyte data and chemical measurements were collected from 51 freshwater lochs in the Isle of Skye, Scotland, during the summer of 1989. Canonical correspondence analysis was employed to investigate correlations between the environmental data, the microcrustacean assemblages, and the aquatic macrophyte community types used for floristic classification of standing waters. Cluster analysis was used to classify lochs based on their microcrustacean assemblages. The major trends in microcrustacean distributions were related to pH, catchment area, macrophyte diversity and the distance from the sea. There was little correlation between the plant community types and microcrustacean assemblages. These results support the case for the development of an integrated approach to lake surveys so that correlations can be made between environmental variables and the distribution and abundance patterns of the plant and animal taxa of conservation interest. 相似文献

- Bottlenose dolphins encountered around the Irish coast are considered part of a wide‐ranging coastal community; however, knowledge on the significance of the north of Ireland for this species is limited by a lack of dedicated effort.
- Through social media, the opportunity now exists to gather large volumes of citizen science data in the form of high‐quality images, potentially extending the spatial and temporal scope of photo‐identification studies.
- The purpose of this study was to investigate social media as a data resource for photo‐identification studies and to provide a preliminary assessment of bottlenose dolphins in the north of Ireland. Specifically, the study sought to examine the photo‐identification data for spatial clustering.
- The study identified 54 well‐marked individuals and provided evidence of potential year‐round occurrence, with successful re‐sightings throughout the study period (2007–2016). There was a geographic concentration of re‐sightings along the north of Ireland, suggestive of interannual site fidelity. These results provide scientific rationale for strategically targeting the north of Ireland in future research on the Irish coastal community.
- For effective conservation of the bottlenose dolphin it is imperative that scientific research, and resultant management objectives, consider wide‐ranging communities such as the Irish coastal community. Our research highlights data collection via social media as a cost‐effective and scientifically valuable tool in the photo‐identification of coastal cetaceans. We recommend that this method is used in research on low‐density and wide‐ranging coastal cetaceans.

Marine invertebrate-associated symbiotic bacteria produce a plethora of novel secondary metabolites which may be structurally unique with interesting pharmacological properties. Selection of strains usually relies on literature searching, genetic screening and bioactivity results, often without considering the chemical novelty and abundance of secondary metabolites being produced by the microorganism until the time-consuming bioassay-guided isolation stages. To fast track the selection process, metabolomic tools were used to aid strain selection by investigating differences in the chemical profiles of 77 bacterial extracts isolated from cold water marine invertebrates from Orkney, Scotland using liquid chromatography-high resolution mass spectrometry (LC-HRMS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Following mass spectrometric analysis and dereplication using an Excel macro developed in-house, principal component analysis (PCA) was employed to differentiate the bacterial strains based on their chemical profiles. NMR 1H and correlation spectroscopy (COSY) were also employed to obtain a chemical fingerprint of each bacterial strain and to confirm the presence of functional groups and spin systems. These results were then combined with taxonomic identification and bioassay screening data to identify three bacterial strains, namely Bacillus sp. 4117, Rhodococcus sp. ZS402 and Vibrio splendidus strain LGP32, to prioritize for scale-up based on their chemically interesting secondary metabolomes, established through dereplication and interesting bioactivities, determined from bioassay screening. 相似文献

Using behavioral landscape ecology to predict species’ responses to land-use and climate change 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Climate change and habitat destruction are widely recognized as major threats to species’ survival. As a result of these anthropogenic impacts, species are often forced into novel landscapes where their persistence is difficult to predict. Knowledge of how individuals move or disperse through the landscape, choose habitat in which to settle, and produce offspring which survive to repeat the process can greatly improve our ability to predict species’ persistence. The field of behavioral landscape ecology uses a strong theoretical base to explore, often experimentally, how the behavior of a particular species is affected by heterogeneous and rapidly changing landscapes and can offer valuable insight for managing species in the face of human-induced environmental changes. When interpreted by modelers, results of landscape-level behavioral experiments can be quantified for use in predictive models. To this end, we summarize the methods and results of research using direct experimental manipulation techniques broken into the following categories: translocations, playback experiments, food resource manipulations, manipulations of reproductive success, direct manipulations of the landscape, and manipulations of predation risk. We review and place in a theoretical framework the results from this emerging body of research regarding how organisms move in and respond to different types of landscapes, both natural and human-altered. We go onto highlight the potential of each experimental method to quantify different processes, which may be useful when interpreted by modelers attempting to parameterize predictive models. Finally, we suggest future directions for experimental research that will allow for greater integration of behavioral landscape ecology and predictive modeling. 相似文献

Toll-like receptors (TLRs) are a family of functionally important receptors for recognition of pathogen-associated molecular pattern (PAMP) since they trigger the pro-inflammatory response and upregulation of costimulatory molecules, linking the rapid innate response to adaptative immunity. In human leukocytes, TLR3 has been found to be specifically expressed in dendritic cells (DC). This study examined the expression of TLR3 in canine monocytes-derived DC (cMo-DC) and PBMC using three new anti-TLR3 mAbs (619F7, 722E2 and 713E4 clones). The non-adherent cMo-DC generated after culture in canine IL-4 plus canine GM-CSF were labelled with the three anti-TLR3 clones by flow cytometry, with a strong expression shown for 619F7 and 722E2 clones. By contrast, TLR3 expression was low to moderate in canine monocytes and lymphocytes. These results were confirmed by Western blot using 619F7 and 722E2 clones and several polypeptide bands were observed, suggesting a possible cleavage of TLR3 molecule or different glycosylation states. In addition, TLR3 was detectable in immunocytochemistry by using 722E2 clone. In conclusion, this first approach to study canine TLR3 protein expression shows that three anti-TLR3 clones detect canine TLR3 and can be used to better characterize canine DC and the immune system of dogs. 相似文献

Pollen development has been studied at a molecular level in several systems that are amenable to genetic or transgenic analysis. We have characterized several tomato genes that are expressed late in pollen development. Our goals in this research were 1) to determine the cis- and tran-acting factors that mediate pollen expression, and 2) to determine the functions of the proteins encoded by these genes. We currently favor the hypothesis that pollen-specific gene expression is mediated in a combinatorial manner. The antioxidant properties of various fractions of a methanolic extract obtained from the aerial parts of Verbascum macrurum have been determined by monitoring their capacity to scavenge the stable free-radical DPPH. They were also evaluated as natural preservatives against oxidative rancidity using the accelerated Rancimat method. Their activities expressed as protection factor (PF(r)) indicated that the fractions rich with phenylpropanoid glycosides were more potent compared to alpha-tocopherol and of the same magnitude as BHT, which were used as reference standards. Ten natural compounds were identified as components of this methanolic extract and were isolated by medium-pressure liquid chromatography (MPLC). Assessment of their antioxidant activities established that acteoside, a polyhydroxylated phenylpropanoid glycoside derivative, is the most potent free radical scavenger and showed the highest protection factor (PF(r)) against sunflower-oil-induced oxidative rancidity. Its activity is comparable to the synthetic antioxidant BHT and clearly superior to natural alpha-tocopherol. This compound therefore represents a very interesting candidate for use in food preservation as natural protecting agent against oxidative rancidity. 相似文献

Protein of endosperm of maize grains originating from three wild-type inbreds and their opaque-2 versions were solubilized in diverse extracts (E) by the sequential use of 0.5 M NaCl, water (E(1,2)), alcohol plus a reducing agent (E(3)), and salt plus a reducing agent (E(4)). Zeins were isolated in extracts E(3) and E(4) obtained by using 55% (w/w) isopropyl alcohol (i-PrOH) + 0.2% dithiothreitol (DTT) followed by 0.5 M NaCl + 0.2% DTT buffered at pH 10 or 60% tert-butyl alcohol (t-BuOH) + 0.2% DTT followed by 0.5% sodium acetate + 0.2% DTT in 30% t-BuOH. For a given genotype the percentage of extracted zeins was independent of the nature of the alcohol. The latter had a slight effect on the respective magnitude of E(3) and E(4): E(3) increased at the expense of E(4) when t-BuOH was substituted to i-PrOH for their isolation. The percentage of the total endosperm nitrogen present in E(3) + E(4) was identical to that of fractions F(II) + F(III) + F(IV) isolated according to the classical Landry-Moureaux extraction procedure. SDS-PAGE analysis revealed the presence of all types of zeins (alpha, beta, gamma, and delta) in E(3) and F(III), residual zeins in E(4) isolated with t-BuOH, and streaking only in E(4) and F(IV) isolated with NaCl at pH 10. The data together with those of the literature were discussed with regard to the influence of procedure on the yield of zeins using alcoholic extraction. 相似文献

Energy and water budget analyses are employed as methods for assessing the effects of vegetation type, cultivation practices, and irrigation methods on the microclimate. A comparison is made of vegetation types that employ water received from (1) natural precipitation and (2) irrigation. Forest lands are compared to corn cultivated by conventional tillage and no tillage methods. The forest canopy generally has a lower surface albedo, greater surface roughness, higher transpiration rates, and increased water storage than the bare soil, mulched, and vegetated surfaces of a corn field. No tillage cultivation reduces wind and water erosion, lowers soil temperatures, and improves water retention compared to standard tillage used on corn fields. Irrigated agriculture has replaced much of the drought resistant vegetation of the Central Valley of California. The energy and water budgets of irrigated crops grown in the semi-arid climate of the Central Valley and irrigated by flood or sprinkler methods exhibit microclimates in which evapotranspiration dominates the energy and mass fluxes. Drip irrigation methods, by contrast, have reduced water losses compared to flood and sprinkler methods. The drip system supplies metered amounts of water to the base of each plant; low soil evaporation and improved water supply to the growing plant results from this method. The latent heat flux is reduced over that found in fields irrigated by flooding or spraying. Generally, agricultural transformation of large stands of natural vegetation is expected to change the micro- and macroclimate of the areas affected. 相似文献
