OBJECTIVE: To examine use of corticosteroids in treating dogs with airway obstruction secondary to hilar lymphadenopathy caused by chronic histoplasmosis. DESIGN: Retrospective study. ANIMALS: 16 dogs. PROCEDURE: Records for dogs with airway obstruction examined from January 1979 through December 1997 were reviewed. Dogs were included in the study if they had hilar lymphadenopathy documented radiographically and bronchoscopically, had serum antibodies against Histoplasma capsulatum, and did not have organisms in any cytologic or histologic samples. Dogs were assigned to groups on the basis of treatment given (5 dogs, corticosteroids only; 5 dogs, corticosteroids and antifungal medication; 6 dogs, antifungal medication only). RESULTS: Clinical signs resolved in < 1 week in dogs treated only with corticosteroids. In dogs treated with corticosteroids and an antifungal medication, improvement was evident in a mean of 2.6 weeks. In 5 of 6 dogs treated with only an antifungal medication, clinical signs resolved in a mean of 8.8 weeks. Dogs receiving corticosteroids did not develop active or disseminated histoplasmosis. CLINICAL IMPLICATIONS: Corticosteroids can be used successfully in the treatment of dogs with hilar lymphadenopathy secondary to histoplasmosis. Affected dogs must be carefully evaluated for active infection. Specimens obtained by means of bronchoalveolar lavage, tracheal washing, or other methods should be examined to exclude the possibility of an active infection, which could result in corticosteroid-induced dissemination of disease.  相似文献

Molecular markers play an essential role today in all aspects of plant breeding, ranging from the identification of genes responsible for desired traits to the management of backcrossing programs. The emergence of marker systems has, for the last 30 years, closely tracked developments in biochemistry and molecular biology. Following the demonstration that retrotransposons are ubiquitous, active, and abundant in plant genomes, markers were developed that are based on the insertional polymorphism they create upon replication. They virtually all exploit the joint that is formed, during retrotransposon integration, between genomic DNA and the long terminal repeats at either end of retrotransposon. The various retrotransposon marker systems differ in the nature of the second primer used in the amplification reactions. All except one of these marker methods is dominant (RBIP is co-dominant). Hence, the availability of effective means to generate doubled haploid populations through gametophytic embryogenesis is valuable for the efficient use of these markers. Over the last eight years, retrotransposon-based markers have been developed for crop species and trees across the plant kingdom, as well as for fungi and insects. Many retrotransposons features make them appealing as the basis of molecular marker systems. They are usually dispersed throughout the genome and produce large genetic changes at the point of insertion that can be detected with family-specific amplification primers. The ancestral state of a retrotransposon insertion is known, and subsequent changes at the locus are not subject to homoplasy. Retrotransposon markers are useful in accelerating backcrossing programs, tagging genes of interest, tracking germplasm, verifying and producing pedigrees, and examining crop evolution.  相似文献

In tropical lowlands, ecosystems with peat strata are commonly reported from Southeast Asia, but hardly at all from Amazonia. In this paper, we quantify the horizontal distribution of four important plant nutrients (Ca, Mg, K and P) in five peatland sites located in Peruvian Amazonia and the vertical distribution of these nutrients in one of the sites. With this data as well as topography measurements of the peat deposit from one of the sites, we showed that minerotrophic and ombrotrophic peatlands can be detected in Amazonian floodplains. The nutrient-poor ombrotrophic bogs receive nutrients only from atmospheric deposition because of their thick peat layer and convex topography, while the minerotrophic swamps are periodically covered by nutrient-rich floodwater and/or receive nutrient input from surface waters or from groundwater with capillary rise. The existence of such peatlands in the Amazonian lowlands increases the regional habitat diversity and availability of palaeoecological information and probably has implications also for the hydrological dynamics, water quality, and carbon dynamics of the area.  相似文献

A spinal cord mixed germ cell tumour was identified in a two-year-old, female Airedale terrier with a history of progressive paraplegia. At necropsy, a discrete pale pink spinal cord mass was identified at the L5 vertebra, which extensively invaded the associated spinal cord segments L6 and L7. Histologically, the tumour was located within the subarachnoid space and invaded the spinal cord. It was composed of three different types of cells: small round cells, forming clusters or islands, similar to germ cells identified in testicular germinomas; large cells with eosinophilic or amphophilic cytoplasm, forming trabeculae; and a third, rarer type of well differentiated epithelial cells, forming acinar or tubular structures. Immunohistochemical examination revealed reactivity to antibodies against alpha-fetoprotein and broad spectrum cytokeratins. The composition, cytological features and immunohistochemical staining of this neoplasm are similar to germ cell tumours previously reported in the suprasellar region and in the eye of dogs.  相似文献
