Indirect immunofluorescence testing for pemphigus-like antibodies was performed on 79 horses: 28 horses with various nonpemphigus dermatologic diseases, 21 horses with various nondermatologic diseases, and 30 normal horses. Pemphigus-like antibodies were detected in 6 horses: 3 normal horses with titers of 1:40, 2 horses with dermatophilosis at titers of 1:10 and 1:80, and 1 horse with lymphosarcoma at a titer of 1:320. It was concluded that equine pemphigus-like antibodies are a potential source of misinterpretation and misdiagnosis in indirect immunofluorescence testing. Direct immunofluorescence testing for whole immunoglobulin, IgG, IgM, and IgA was performed on skin lesions from 2 horses with dermatophilosis. Diffuse intercellular deposition of whole immunoglobulin and IgG was found in both horses. It was concluded that equine dermatophilosis is a potential source of misinterpretation and misdiagnosis in direct immunofluorescence testing. 相似文献

The prevalence of swine gastrointestinal parasites was determined from all listed large swine operations (28) and a geographically representative sample (70) of the population of small hog farm operations in Oklahoma. Fecal samples (n = 975) were collected from 98 farms. From the 98 farms, parasites were recovered in pig feces as follows: Ascaris, 53.0%, strongyles, 53.1%, Trichuris, 35.7%, spirurids, 6.1%, Strongyloides, 19.4%, coccidia, 57.1%, and Balantidium, 55.1%. A higher percentage (16.5%) of hogs maintained on cement floors were positive for Ascaris than were those on either dirt lots (11.9%) or slatted floors (9.9%), but pigs on dirt lots were more often positive with a higher percentage of coccidia (21.0%) than those on either cement or slatted floors (8.5% and 6.0%, respectively). Prevalence of Trichuris was essentially the same (6.8% to 11.3%) in hogs from all 3 management practices. 相似文献

Five groups of 6 fasted crossbred steers were injected IM with standard dosages of xylazine hydrochloride (0.3 to 0.5 mg/kg). At maximal sedation, the steers were injected IV with the antagonists' doxapram (1.0 mg/kg), doxapram + yohimbine (0.125 mg of yohimbine/kg), doxapram + 4-aminopyridine (4-AP; 0.3 mg of 4-AP/kg), or 4-AP + yohimbine. One group was given 1.0 ml of saline solution IV instead of antagonists. Doxapram, doxapram + yohimbine, doxapram + 4-AP, and 4-AP + yohimbine decreased mean standing time (time from antagonist injection until animal could stand unaided) to 17.0, 4.3, 3.3, and 4.5 minutes, respectively--significantly (P less than 0.05) down from a control value of 49.8 minutes. Mean total recovery time (time from xylazine injection until animal resumed eating) was decreased to 78 minutes by doxapram and 81.6 minutes by doxapram + 4-AP--significantly (P less than 0.05) down from the control value of 142.9 minutes. Respiratory character was improved (depth of respiration was increased) only by doxapram + 4-AP. Relapses to recumbency and marked sedation were not seen in steers given doxapram + 4-AP or the saline solution. One steer given doxapram, 2 given doxapram + yohimbine, and 1 given 4-AP + yohimbine relapsed to recumbency and sedation. A group of 13 cows were dosed orally nine or 10 days after a normal oestrous cycle; six animals received colostrum, five animals received milk containing varying amounts of oestrone sulphate, and two cows were given milk containing a low level of oestrone sulphate. Measurements of milk progesterone levels after dosing showed that colostrum had an apparent luteolytic effect, milk containing oestrone sulphate at a level of 2000 pg/ml had a less marked effect on milk progesterone and those animals receiving milk showed no reduction in milk progesterone. These results show that there is a physiological basis for the practice of inducing overt oestrus in cows showing no visible oestrus, by dosing them with colostrum. 相似文献

A bacteriological and serological survey for evidence of contagious equine metritis (CEM) was made during the 1980 breeding season on 3 horse studs in South Australia with a history of previous infection. Swabs from the clitoral sinus and the cervix were cultured for Haemophilus equigenitalis and serum was screened for antibody using the complement fixation test (CFT) and the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). The specificity of both tests was greater than 0.99 but the ELISA was more sensitive in detecting antibody in infected mares. On the evidence presented it was concluded that H. equigenitalis is no longer present in the horse studs investigated. 相似文献

A 6-year-old dog was presented for draining tracts associated with both mandibular first molar teeth. Radiographs of the affected teeth showed periapical bone lysis. Surgical tooth extractions were performed and the tooth segments were submitted for histopathologic examination. Microscopic evaluation of the teeth showed in folding of the enamel and dentin consistent with a diagnosis of dens invaginatus. Examination performed 13-months following the extraction procedures indicated uncomplicated healing at the extraction sites and no other visible evidence of endodontic disease. 相似文献

Endectocide compounds are extensively used for broad-spectrum parasite control and their topical administration to cattle is widespread in clinical practice. Pour-on formulations of moxidectin, ivermectin, eprinomectin and doramectin (DRM) are marketed internationally for use in cattle. However, variability in antiparasitic efficacy and pharmacokinetic profiles has been observed. Although the tissue distribution pattern for different endectocide molecules given subcutaneously to cattle has been described, only limited information on drug concentration profiles in tissues of parasite location after topical treatment is available. Understanding the plasma and target tissue kinetics for topically-administered endectocide compounds is relevant to optimise their therapeutic potential. The current work was designed to measure the plasma and gastrointestinal (GI) concentration profiles of DRM following its pour-on administration to calves. The influence of natural licking behaviour of cattle on DRM concentration in mucosal tissue and luminal content of different GI sections was evaluated. The trial was conducted in two experimental phases. In Phase I, the DRM plasma kinetics was comparatively characterised in free-licking and in 2-day licking-restricted (non-licking) calves. The pattern of distribution of topical DRM to mucosal and luminal contents from abomasum, duodenum, ileum, caecum and spiral colon was assessed in free-licking and non-licking calves restricted over 10 days post-administration (Phase II). The prevention of licking caused marked changes on the plasma and GI kinetics of DRM administered pour-on. In 2-day licking restricted calves, DRM systemic availability was significantly lower (29%) than in free licking animals during the first 9 days post-treatment. Following a 10-day long licking restriction period, DRM concentrations profiles in both mucosal tissue and luminal contents of the GI tract were markedly higher in animals allowed to lick freely. This enhancement in drug concentrations in free-licking compared to non-licking calves, was particularly pronounced in the abomasal (38-fold higher) and duodenal (six-fold higher) luminal content. As shown earlier for ivermectin, licking behaviour may facilitate the oral ingestion of topically-administered DRM in cattle. This would be consistent with the marked lower drug concentration profiles measured in the bloodstream and GI tract of the animals prevented from licking. The work reported here provides relevant information on the pattern of DRM distribution to the GI tract after pour-on treatment, and contributes to understand the variability observed in the antiparasitic persistence of topically-administered endectocides in cattle. The implications of natural licking in topical treatments are required to be seriously assessed to achieve optimal parasite control and to design parasitological and pharmacological studies within the drug approval process. 相似文献

Cokeromyces recurvatus, a zygomycete, was isolated by fungal culture from the peritoneal fluid of a cat with jejunal perforation secondary to intestinal lymphosarcoma. This organism has not been recovered previously from a veterinary patient. The tissue form of C. recurvatus is morphologically similar to those of Coccidioides immitis and Paracoccidioides brasiliensis and may be misdiagnosed as 1 of these organisms on the basis of cytologic or histopathologic specimens, particularly in geographic regions where these organisms are not endemic. 相似文献

A 3-year-old Thoroughbred gelding was examined because of clinical signs of pneumonia and shock. Mucous membrane petechiation and ventral edema were observed and considered to be a result of vasculitis. Epidermal necrosis developed on the distal portions of the limbs. The horse had a persistent high fever that was unresponsive to nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory treatment, and Staphylococcus aureus was isolated from a nasal swab specimen and 2 transtracheal wash fluid samples. Antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and supportive treatment resulted in clinical improvement. However, resolution of the pulmonary infection required long-term (42 days) antimicrobial administration. Staphylococcus aureus strains isolated from this horse were positive for the toxic shock syndrome toxin-1 gene and were shown to produce toxic shock syndrome toxin-1, the causative factor in toxic shock syndrome in humans. The horse's clinical signs were attributed to toxic shock syndrome secondary to pulmonary S. aureus infection. 相似文献
