Patterns of Nitrogen Excretion by Embryonic Softshell Turtles (Trionyx spiniferus) Developing in Cleidoic Eggs

Embryonic softshell turtles develop inside eggs exchanging little, if any, liquid water with the nest environment. Despite the consequent restriction on availability of water to support development, embryos convert most of the ammonia released in catabolism of proteins into soluble urea rather than insoluble urate, and thereby commit a portion of their limited reserve of water to serve as solvent for metabolic wastes. This finding is contrary to expectations from prior studies of cleidoic eggs.     

A fossil noctuid moth egg from the late cretaceous of eastern north america

A moth egg assignable to the family Noctuidae (Lepidoptera) is described from 75-million-year-old sediments from Martha's Vineyard, Massachusetts. This sample, which extends the fossil record of this farnily and modern heteroneuran moths back to the Cretaceous, may provide insight into the coevolution of moths and flowering plants, as well as have implications for the evolution of bats.     

Conditions for the successful use of science

There is ground for concern that the British research and development effort, which is of considerable size, may not be well distributed. In some areas of intense scientific effort, commercial priorities tend to be forgotten. Too many of the units of the economic system are backward in understanding what science can offer and inefficient in using the opportunities which it provides. Evidence suggests that the successful use of science depends on the overall quality of management rather than specifically on its degree of scientific knowledge.     

Selenium levels of beef cattle in southeastern british columbia relative to supplementation and type of pasture

Moderate to extremely low levels of selenium in hay were related to marginally deficient levels of selenium in sera from cattle in the Windermere Valley of southeastern British Columbia. Deficiency was most pronounced in cattle fed local hay during the winter or grazed on fertilized/irrigated pastures. Cattle on range had adequate levels of serum selenium. When sodium selenite was fed at 1.0 and 3.5 mg per head per day, serum selenium levels increased commensurate with the dose. Clinical observations indicated that a variety of clinical problems disappeared after injection or supplementation with selenium/vitamin E.
